Should I Play on Keybaord and Mouse?

An Onyx player told me to learn to play on Keyboard and mouse because it has more response. So I think I may give it a try.
But halo has always been a console game for me, and I have better muscle memory and response with the dual sticks now.

Some people say gamepad is “living in the past” but to my knowledge the keyboard and mouse is significantly older. As they were developed in the 1960’s.

Also, I hear that you have significantly more aim assist on the game pad, which you can see in FFA if you let an opponent run past you, your redicle will automatically track their direction?

What do you think?
Thank you

  • Both input methods have advantages and disadvantages over one another. controller/xbox gets aim assist + red reticle and KBM gets the ability to turn around rapidly and strafe like an absolute madman while shooting faster -when using semi-autos - due to a lack of capacitive triggers.

Having played on both inputs and listened to each argue about which is unfair and better than the other, the main thing I’ve learned is, aiming feels bad using either method. More specifically, aiming feels inconsistent, not as fluid as it should, and its difficult to track people. Also, aim assist in infinite’s multiplayer is the weakest its ever felt in any Halo title and its also weaker than the aim assist in its own campaign. Below is a link to the most informative video I’ve seen about this explaining specifically why it feels this way. Also, if you primarily use KBM, this video may help you improve getting around controller player’s aim assist.
Good luck to you, hope this helps.

Depends if you only play ranked, then i would say go with controllers. br is harder to use with the mouse as you can easily mess a whole burst. Even shyway said no one is using mouse and keyboard cuz it is harder to use as opposed to controller. But you are welcome to try. Also depends if you have muscle memory for the input. I have for keyboard so i dont use controller. if you have this for controller then it could be hard for you to use mnk

It comes down to preference and skill really. I’m a MNK player and can keep up with controller Onyx players but you really have to do your best to stay consistent with your shots as there is no room for error. If you play MNK I suggest adjusting your playstyle to suit. I find keeping a mid-long range I can land my shots alot easier compared to up close. However in super close combat I can turn around faster and make plays with that. Controller is 100% more accurate. I think the average controller accuracy at Onyx is 60% whereas MNK is around 40%.

K&M will make you a better player long term because it forces you to play twice as hard in order to be consistent…

In Past Halo games and even in infinite (tho to somewhat lesser degree…), Movement is 100% of where the skill comes from in 1v1 scenarios. Reason being is because auto aim lightly tracks targets for you which is enough to lessen the stress on the player so they can focus more on other things such as nade placement and height advantage…

In every other FPS on PC, especially twitch shooters, the skill is 50% movement and 50% Aim, because your movement is constantly affecting your aim so you are having to constantly correct your aim to track a moving target while also moving and avoiding being hit yourself…

I played Halo with controller for the longest time for Halo 3 and Reach, but on PC in the Custom Edition days I played with K&M. At some point I realized Aim Assist was so strong on console it was actually helping me more than I realized and so I ended up having to really get better in PC FPSs by learning manual recoil compensation, target tracking and properly leading targets when using slow projectile weapons, which really helped me improve my aim, but I still almost always lose to Controller players in Halo because not having dead on aim will punish you harshly which is very easy to make when using K&M which does not hold your hand in the least…

I defs recommend it, but do note that you are going to lose a LOT of gunfights until you get adjusted…

TL:DR:

Controller Pros:
+light auto aim that tracks targets from fairly distant ranges, regardless of weapon
+comfortable for long sessions
+easy to use

Controller Cons:
-Slower turn speed, so reaction times are not as good
-limited hotkeys
-can’t type text

K&M Pros:
+can text chat
+high reaction time
+much more precise aim at longer ranges
+more buttons for actions

K&M Cons:
-No auto tracking at all
-movement will negatively impact your aim without constant manual compensation
-will cookie cut fast moving targets
-higher barrier to entry
-can cause serious hand cramps after awhile, make sure to use a good mouse…

I agree, playing Halo casually on kbm is fine, but playing at a very high level requires an unbelievable amount of mechanical skill.

Only the best players may apply.
