I have seen many comments that talked about some details of halo video games being non-canon and altered, my question is if it is really important that the history of a video game is totally Canon and why it bothers people so much that some things change inside the game.
Continuity, no one likes a story that changes all the time. Look at star wars and the complete disarray of their whole cannon.
Attention to detail is a good thing.
I prefer lore-accurate scenes over half canon ish kinda great but also kinda sloppy scenes, any day.
Even when it doesn’t make or break the game, attention to detail can elevate it from being good, to being a masterpiece.
A big part of it is immersion, I wanna really feel like I am when and where I’m supposed to be.
The main reason I’m a Halo fan is for it’s story, lore and world-building, I value those things above gameplay. So to me unnecessary inaccuracies do matter in stories that are intended to be received as canon.
My general feeling about it is just a long sigh.

Definitely agree!!!
Definitely in the campaign lore should lead off and lead into other media in the halo world. However with the Halo story spanning across long periods - it still can be quite diverse. Think how different the 80s was to the 90s. Or before and after the pandemic.
With multiple-player I think it can be portrayed more freely due to the game having to capture a lot
more parameters. So this could include- real world events - cross game promotions - historical portrayals. One could say Red v Blue was iconic to the multiplayer - but that seems to have deviated in Infinite. From a Spartan perspective. (but it doesn’t matter - we evolve every day)

I don’t really follow the cannon in Star Wars but from a film perspective - I really didn’t understand what they were doing with the last trilogy. It felt like I was re watching the first trilogy (4,5,6)
Although I understand other fans’ confections to the books, the games are what draw the most fans in, so I think games that contradict the books like Reach rule out the books as being canon. That means that even a story like Halo 5, which is garbage, is canon, even if I don’t think it is a good story

They completely fudged up the last series of movies. I’ve read a lot of star wars books growing up that were original cannon, now they are considered legacy. The origin of Boba Fett is completely different in the old books then the books and movies now. The books of shadows of the empire and a few others tell the story of Luke and Leia after return of the Jedi, which is completely different then the movies. It’s in a sad state of affairs and they keep changing things and making a mess out of it. I just hope Halo doesn’t fall into the same mess that Star Wars has.

Appreciate the understanding
Would you personally consider the opening cutscene in Halo 4 to over-rule the lore in the matter of Chief’s GEN2 armour not being existent during the human-Covenant war? Since Halo 4 is a game I mean. Or would you say there are exceptions? In which case, what determines that to you?
And what about when games contradict other games? What are your views when that happens?
A lot of fans are mostly into Halo for the games, so it makes sense that many value the game’s stories more, although personally I don’t agree. And objectively speaking canon is canon. For some canon to be more canon than other canon is more towards head-canon area, which is completely fine, there is nothing wrong with that, just saying.
Ultimately it just feels better to at least try to avoid as many contradictions as possible in all media to make things simpler. But mistakes can happen in such a huge world, I understand that.
Actually, this all depends on personal preference on it. Take Lord of the Rings for example, some people prefer the original books, and some prefer the Peter Jackson movies of LOTR. But anyway, my opinion is I haven’t read the books because I don’t like to read long books. Books bore me and games could easily stay true to the books if they tried, but seeing some responses on this, it sounds like the story is different. But to me, what happens in the games still gives a pretty good summarization of the canon I guess (haven’t read books). So if we’re talking about speedrunner Chief going around the levels at ease and doing crazy tricks, I think most of us agree THAT Chief is our game canon Chief. Not Halo 5 Chief.
Halo Reach wise, I say books even though I haven’t read them because I refuse to believe Kat has never driven in her life and always drives us off cliffs and the sad cutscene with her was way too quick. Plus I dressed my Spartan up as if he’d join the forerunner side, so that alone makes no sense with the canon.
I’m confused as to what you’re asking here. Are you questioning whether or not the games, the fundamental core of the story, should be canon? Or do you mean should the games’ canon take precedence over all other canon?

Same!
I would say that the story provided from the main FPS Halo games* shouldn’t be viewed as cannon mainly due it being Halos main channel. Then, there do always exist a lot of side content like novels, other Halo games where its status has cannon should be decided on a case by case basis.
- This includes Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, Halo 4, Halo 5: Guardians
