Should Halo look more gritty?

I never thought a moment that Halo looked like it had a dark atmosphere when it came to battlefields and war. Halo Reach filled those shoes for a bit in the second half of the campaign but everything in multiplayer and Forge maps were just bright and sunny days. When you take into big battles of from Battlefield and Star Wars battlefront, crap is just happening everywhere. I figured being on a losing end of a war, you would see a lot more but sadly we can’t take in too much. They should really put in more cinematic feel into their games from maps and campaign, so far Halo Infinite looks pretty bright and sunny.

From what I’ve seen from the multiple gameplay teasers/trailers, I think the multiplayer setting is supposed to feel that way (and it does feel that way throughout the multiple Halo games). Campaign has a different feeling to it but that’s just it: You are in the shoes of a soldier with a mission. On multiplayer, despite whatever it may be, you don’t feel like a soldier. You feel like someone playing Halo multiplayer, if that makes sense.

Yeah it makes sense with the whole multiplayer id like to think they will do better with infinite as their is so much on the line we can only wait and see.

That’s a tough question for me. I absolutely love the grittiness of Reach, but I think I enjoy the colorfulness of Halo 3 the most. Maybe the sweet spot for me is somewhere between those two.

Reach was a video game portrait of the truth of the spartans, them; Despite their augments and armor, they are also afraid and can also die, I honestly believe that it is the Halo game that portrays the harshness of war

Well, you do have to keep in mind the actual setting of the game. Reach was a beautiful planet until the Covenant actually started glassing it, then it became hell on Reach. In the original trilogy, most of the game looked beautiful and sunny because you spent most of your time on an artificial world that was designed to be paradise (usually). Same goes for Halo 4. Halo 5’s environments, while vibrant, did capture that same “Holy crap -Yoink- is hitting the fan” kind of look when it comes to the grittiness of the environment. It was apocolypse. Halo Infinite takes place, for the most part at least, on a beautiful artificial world which is why it also looks vibrant, pretty and sunny. That being said, I would love to see more violent environments in Halo Infinite. Things like storms, fire, very gritty settings would be nice. Especiallyu on the weather side of things, I’ve always wanted a BTB map that actually affected your vision to the point of the lights on vehicles actually serving a purpose. Imagine battling it out in a hurricane on Zeta Halo, thunder cracking and rain falling everywhere, or a blizzard on a mountain is making visibility very low.

Well even on a game like Halo ODST, just a soldier dropped from the sky into a battlefield, I personally don’t see the game capturing a battlefield. Maybe it was because of the game’s limitations at its time compared to Halo 5’s Battle of Sunion mission. If it can just capture a feeling of being in a battleground and less of a spec ops in the sideline, it can help give a new feeling to the Halo games.

Also, yes I want more problematic missions in Halo. We don’t often see things happening in the background in Halo. Only a space elevator falling or a Guardian coming from the ground. We never really seen a glassing in front of us in gameplay (not cinematic or cutscene).

Yes it should be. Reach captured that image perfectly and it would have looked great across all of the prior titles too.

I think not gritty more as realistic like Halo 3. Halo always go for realism like not in scientific way but also not like halo 4 or 5. ODST is a great example. Reach I can call gritty but thats what they were aiming for or idk this is how I think

Personally I wouldn’t like more grit. It made sense for reach but I feel like H3 and H2 is about the peak for the average halo game in terms of grit and art style.

Halo: Reach was about as gritty as I think I’d like for Halo. Its fun colors and almost cartoonish looking aliens also help contribute to a fun game.

I think you can accomplish gritty through story. Halo is an inherently gritty story, and you see that through gameplay, dialogue, and more, but, it still needs to be something fun to look at. I don’t hate the look of 1 - 3, or 4 - 5 even though they’re very different, but if they took it in the direction of a game like The Division, I think it would be too much and just be plain unfun to look at.

I’m not sure if you’ve watched any of the cutscenes from Halo Wars 2, but those are very gritty and dark. The same as Halo 2 Anniversary. Granted there are bright sunny levels but there are also dark gritty levels too.

Halo 5 just didn’t have any of those really as it was more of an aesthetically pleasing campaign with the wide open backgrounds and bright Sangheli and Forerunner worlds.

And the story… Damn. Dark.

I don’t really mind if the game is more gritty or colourful, just want some nice looking weather and transitions. It would be cool if they included more blood splatter for the realism.

I agree. Love for them to go back to rated M halo games.

I have NO idea how rating works, but seeing multiplayer and campaign are almost divided (multiplayer free to play and campaign being the rest of the game), it would be cool to implement the “gritty” content on campaign and multiplayer can be more of a standard arcade shooter.

Yeah I agree with this

Yes, I feel like Reach did the art style best, gritty and more down to Earth. Same with Halo 3’s Forerunner designs, they look worn and dirty whereas in 4 and 5, the structures look too clean, especially considering they are thousands of years old.

I Personally prefer the saturated style of the games to be honest.
