Halo has been an amazing franchise that only ever require having a ton of enemies to kill and t bag. It was enough for people to keep on playing. But now that halo is evolving from just a super soldier following orders and killing whatever is stupid enough to challenge him to a soldier with emotions and self, do you think it would be bad to add romance to his check list? Would it be good?
I for one after so many years think its time that the chief gets the girl. And it could be any girl that you think qualifies like the childhood friend he meet in the halo evolutions story, a spartan 2, cortana etc
We have had (and continue to have) romance featured in Halo: Buck and Veronica.
There’s no strict reason why we can’t have more romance in the series, but it would be extremely unlikely that having it be a major part of the story could be done well. Side stories like Buck’s (and Halsey/Keyes) are plenty.
Master Chief in particular should not be involved in a romance, since it would be completely out of character for him. People suggesting he and Cortana should fall in love (or are in love already) always creeps me out a bit… to me she’s always seemed to fill more of a mother or sister role to Chief, certainly not love interest. Remember that just because a man and woman are close doesn’t mean they secretly want to make out.
Not every character needs a soulmate, least of all a character like Master Chief.

What about at the end of chiefs story. Though 343 have said that there is an end, they haven’t said that he will live or die. Imo, they chief will survive everything and with his ongoing discovery of his humanity, he might be able to live a normal life afterwards. I think at that point the chief should have someone. But yeah I also agree that during the main story, chief should be just a soldier saving the universe without other distractions.
Not every story should end with the main character settling down to a normal life with a trophy life-partner. That would be unbelievably sappy and cliche. Master Chief doesn’t want a “normal” life. Keep in mind that John isn’t a normal person, including in a psychological sense. He wouldn’t know what to do with himself if he actually outlived combat ability. Not everyone wants to settle down and have a love life, and that goes double for someone like him. Given the choice, he’d probably choose to honorably die in combat and see anything else as outliving his usefulness.
His story will end one way or another, and eventually he’ll either die in battle or retire in his old age. Even after retirement from combat, though, I can’t possibly imagine him not choosing to serve some kind of military role to keep busy and active as much as he could push himself for, probably helping to teach and train up future generations of Spartans at his “least” active when the years begin to wind down. In any case, his character is not one to pursue a romantic relationship with anyone.
“Discovering his humanity” doesn’t have to mean “discovering his soft side”. A person’s “humanity” is not defined by them falling in love.
It would be interesting to see the Arbiter have a favorite wife. As kaidon of his keep, he actually has multiple wives… And a Sangheli with as many honors, titles, accomplishments, etc, as the Arbirter is bound to have many wives… This information is based on Halo: Cole Protocol. And there is that upcoming Halo: Shadow of Intent. Including that female elite and the Half Jaw (forget his actual name, except Vadam). Most likely it won’t involve anything between the two, but hey, maybe it might actually pull it off. All the above would be an interesting reminder that Sangheli, and other aliens, might not be all that different from humans as they seem.
But yeah, I don’t see the Cheif doing anything but servicing humanity as a warrior, and a mentor of other future warriors. And romance doesn’t really belong in a FPS game, unless the main character is some sort of scoundrel (Han Solo).
Now, an interesting idea would be if his DNA was taken, and a surrogate mother was chosen. Humanity has at this point gotten better at cloning. The flash clones are so fragile because of the suddenness and briefness of their growing period (creation, etc, whatever you want to call it). However, this is merely a half hearted attempt at replacing the chief. In fact, while I could believe ONI would probably do something like this, it’s just so lame story wise…
Some characters are better suited for it, but my guess is at the end of the day. It all depends on the personal preference on everyone that plays. If someone pairs someone with another. I am not going to judge, the same way I don’t really care if people don’t like what I like. Just personal preference at the end of the day
Absolutely! I don’t think you’re utilizing your characters to their fullest potential if some of them can’t have intimacy with one another. Romance is an essential part of the human experience, and of course being a science-fiction setting, one for many alien races as well, chief among them being the Sangheili and Forerunner. So why not? We shouldn’t be scared that authors choose to explore this relatively unseen side of many characters. Sure, many characters don’t need to necessarily have romantic entanglements, but this universe is surely mature and big enough for romance to coexist alongside every other narrative element seen in the franchise. Plus you’re introducing a new element into the universe that may attract new audiences who simultaneously enjoy the basics of science fiction along with romance.
I absolutely adore what little romantic involvement we’ve seen between characters, be it a deep sense of mutual affection or one-sided fawning in obvious and teasing fashions. Buck and Dare’s relationship was one part I enjoyed so much in New Blood and I wish we had gotten even more of it. Imagine if we could see into the love life of someone like Maria-062, a SPARTAN-II who retired from active service to start a family. Was there romantic involvement with the other parent? If so, I think it would be quite amazing to see how someone with the emotional background of an older generation Spartan could overcome her single need to protect humanity with pursuing something like a relationship and a family in the midst of a war. Readers could see how Maria’s partner helped her get over any troubles she had or if they simply were incapable or didn’t want to. That’s a lot more interesting to me than yet another space opera.
