A bunch of backstory, for those who don’t know about Halo: Chronicles:
For all those who don’t know, Halo: Chronicles (Halo Nation link, Halopedia link, if you want to know more) was a game developed by WingNut Entertainment, set in the (gasp!) Halo universe. It was developed in conjunction with Peter Jackson (LotR and King Kong director), and a small Bungie team (including Joseph Staten). Unlike previous Halo games, it was slated to be an episodic story-telling game, focusing on the personal aspect war, and its impact on characters.
When the Halo film collapsed in on itself (after both 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures pulled funding), it essentially cut all ties between Peter Jackson and Microsoft Studios, causing Halo: Chronicles to be cancelled mid-development. The team from Bungie sent to cooperate with WingNut on the game returned to Bungie, and was reassigned to making Halo 3: ODST (which is one of my favourite Halos of all time, giving high hopes to Halo: Chronicles, IMO). Unfortunately, little-to-no media was ever released on Halo: Chronicles, aside from work-in-progress box art and comments from affiliates of the project. I imagine, from the descriptions, that it would have been something akin to the gameplay and story-telling style of Telltale’s phenomenal Walking Dead series (not necessarily in graphical style, though).
I wrote this to give my two cents on Halo: Chronicles and its cancellation, in the hopes that someone in 343i might come across this thread. Personally, I think that the project should be revived, if at all possible (I know it was a third-party dev, but Msoft own the IP, so…) or if it’s not worth salvaging, at least some of what would have been the game should be shown to the public. I think that its cancellation was a sad loss, and a waste of potential, and it’s especially sad that it died in a very hushed way, with only a couple of low-key statements on the matter.
So, if there’s anyone at 343i reading this, I’d like (at least part of) this project to see the light of day, and even if it’s not feasible to port it to XB1 and continue development, surely simply showing us some of what would have been isn’t too much of an ask. To everyone else, what do you think of the project? Would you like to see it continued?
TL;DR Halo: Chronicles was a cancelled episodic Halo story-telling game. I’d like to see it revived, or at least revisited in some way. Thoughts?
