Should Halo 4 have a ranking system(like halo 2-3) not a progression ranking system (like reach). what do you think the benefits of a ranking system is.
They are going to have a progression system and something else based on skill.
Hmmmmmm… YES!
> They are going to have a progression system and something else based on skill.
What he said, there is going to be progression system for unlocking things and some skill based ranking system.
The progression system is returning, so there isn’t much we can say or do to change that. From a few screenshots, it looks as though winning, playing the objective, and performing well (without going afk) seems to be rewarded more.
As much as i want as a ranking system in Halo 4, i am split to which one Halo 4 will benefit from the most. The Arena is not so good, the 1-50 apparently had a problem with boosters and second accounts (though it did at least pair you up with players near your number) and the halo 2 system has received endless praise but i am not sure why (didn’t play Halo 2 online sadly :/)
I can’t put into words how much I’m going to hate it if they put in a ranking system anywhere close to Reach’s.(AKA Call of Duty.) Halo 3’s ranking system is the best I’ve seen. It could still be improved though. I reeeeeeally am gonna hate it if they put in Reach’s. Reach ranks mean absolutely nothing, and no one disagrees! All being an inheritor shows is that you’ve played Halo a lot. Nothing else. I’m not trying to diss Halo: Reach, it’s just it’s honestly very true.

The ranks are designed for playing time and to make players feel good about themselves regardless of skill. That’s a problem because these type of progression ranks are no indicator of how good or bad you are nor can you be expected to be matched up against similarly skilled players this way.
I am thinking that Bungie thought “if player A plays for a long time, it means he knows a thing or two about the game!”. I could see the logic behind this and it would work in an ideal world.
Except that we don’t live in an ideal world.
The fact that you can play Firefight to progress rank means this idea (in terms of competitiveness and matching players fairly) falls flat on it’s face. This coupled with the lower than expected population and lax trueskill system, we get sub par matches that are inconsistent.
No system can be full proof and that’s not what i expect. What I do expect is this:
The game telling me where i stand personally (ranked) and other players rank. This feature should not be hidden and buried by UI elements. It’s something to be proud of, not a mark of shame.
Ranked playlists themselves and not just a single playlist of Team Slayer with a low population of 500-800.
Players are being matched according to skill (while this does not fully eliminate the chance of getting a bad match, it definitely lowers the consistency of being paired up against slumber parties below your skill level or Matcmaking Warriors above it).
At least some sort of true skill would be good, when I get matched up with or against someone with K/D minus the thousands it don’t help me or them.

Has this been confirmed yet or is just assumed/speculation?

This is conjecture from what I know. MLG players have mentioned hearing about 2 separate ranks, however. I haven’t heard ANY confirmation from 343i. I may have missed it, though.
343 think they can find a ranking system which doesn’t encourage boosting, while still being based on skill. GL;HF.
Personally I see them copy-pasting or adding minor tweaks to the Arena system, though they said they weren’t going to use it. Reseting ranks is probably the only way to not promote boosting, the only problem is that a system like that is even more boring than Reach’s progression one.
There will be a ranking system, but we don’t know how it will work yet.
