In Halos 1 through Reach, grenades have always been something you could pick up by default. However, in Halo 4, picking up grenades became something you could only do if you had the perk for it. A consequence of this was that Halo 4’s maps have little to no grenades spawned on them, and the only grenades you can pick up are those dropped by dead players.
Would you prefer Halo 5 to allow you to pick up grenades by default, or require you to have a perk to do it?
> There are other ways to prevent grenade spam. Such as spawning people with only two or even just a single frag. No need for a perk to fix this issue.
Exactly. Or making grenades weaker. Halo 1 allowed you 8 very powerful grenades, but they were very easy to see and took forever to explode. Halo 2 allowed you 8 as well, and they blew up faster, but they were much much weaker.
“Grenade spam” only ever became an issue after Reach, when the frags both exploded too quickly and were too powerful. Solving this with a perk is the worst possible option, since grenade spam is a balancing issue, not a game mechanic issue.
Grenades in Halo were never a problem in the trilogy. They did this by balancing them differently. H:CE the grenades were powerful, but they were easy enough to dodge because they didn’t explode until they were at rest. Halo 2 they made it that you couldn’t throw them as far and they were weaker. Halo 3 in my opinion had the best balance between distance and power.
The problem with grenades started with Reach when they decided to make it so you could throw them far, they exploded quickly, and they were mini nukes. And when they added ridiculously slow player movement people started to complain about grenades.
Changing the ability to pick up grenades was just purely an act of laziness. Instead of trying to balance things they went with this gimmick system that does not in any way say Halo.
Certain things like Nade Pickup, Shielding, Recharge etc, should all be default player traits.
Other things like Firepower, Survivor, Grenadier etc. shouldn’t exist, as weapon spawns should be based around gametype, survivor is dumb, and grenade capacity should be a Player Trait in Custom Options (default 1 per spawn, 2 per carrying capacity IMO).
In terms specifically of this, we should be able to pick them up off corpses by default, but we should only spawn with one nade so it’s not a spam-fest.
Default, of course. It’s the way Halo always was, and the way it should stay. It doesn’t make sense how my Spartan doesn’t know how to pick crap off the ground without a CoD-esque perk.
I imagine grenade pickup was restricted to allow for the addition of custom loadouts… Nade spam wasn’t that much of a problem, it is the spamming of sticky grenades if everyone was to select them. I imagine that would have been over the top in early builds. An additional reason was just for the sake of having an extra perk to choose… New player: “oh cool, i can has more grenades with this”.
Restricting grenade pickup doesn’t add to the game… It takes away from it. Grenades are one corner of the Halo combat triangle. Only having 2 grenades per lifetime really reduces the significance of 1/3 of your combat repertoire.
