What do you guys think?
Ever since they added falling damage back in Halo Reach I’ve only found it to be really annoying and not much else.
It was only made more redundant in Halo 4 with falling damage hardly ever occurring except certain falls that would just kill you randomly. Fall a certain distance and you’re fine, fall a little further and you take some shield damage, a teeny bit more and ok I’m dead…
Point is I don’t really see the point in falling damage anymore. It doesn’t affect gameplay that much and the only way to mitigate it in custom games is to lower the gravity. Why is it even here? I enjoyed customs in Halo 2 and 3 jumping off huge cliffs and living because you know I am a SUPER SOLDIER WITH ADVANCED ARMOR THAT HELPS CHIEF RE-ENTER EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE!
It just seems pointless to include anymore except as a custom option if you ask me.
Thoughts from you guys?
It’s unnecessary at this point. Don’t bring it back please.
> It’s unnecessary at this point. Don’t bring it back please.
This.
I think the stun effect you get on impact should probably stay though. Gives a feeling of weight and at least a little risk vs reward if you go jumping off cliffs willy-nilly.
Yeah I could do without it.
If I were of the anti-JP league, then I would probably argue that it would break certain maps, especially where extra long falls would result in no damage. But, I quibble on a hypothetical. Fall damage could disappear forever and I wouldn’t miss it.
I love fall damage, but Halo 4 didn’t pull it off as well as I’d have liked. I think Reach/CE did it best.
It should definitely. There should be some kind of penalty for jumping out of aircraft.
> It should definitely. There should be some kind of penalty for jumping out of aircraft.
Yeah, true, there need to be some map restrictions. The whole Chief falling from upper atmosphere isn’t the best analogy, because he didn’t move for, like, hours after he landed.

Yup.
I had to go with ‘should stay’.
Even though I too am the one to make the ‘I’m a genetically enhanced super solider for cripes sake, it’s LOGICAL!’ argument (on keeping sprint, mostly,) but fall damage needs to stay as well.
You shouldn’t get away with evacuating a failing Banshee high above the battlefield and be completely unscathed. I’m not saying it should kill you or total your shields, just a little chunk from the bar. Also, if you soar too high in your jetpack (if they return), you can’t just dive bomb an unsuspecting player as you descend without having a bit of recoil.
I will say this, however:
Fall damage can go, but there has to be some kind of fall penalty. Such as being momentarily stunned for a few seconds, like when kicked out of a vehicle, just not as long.
After all, without fall damage, what would we do in that time it took us to grab that Reach achievement, “If They Came to Hear Me Beg”?
I really dislike fall damage. I don’t like having to limit my possible jumps and mobility because I might take damage or die.
No. No. Absolutely not! It was an absolutely stupid addition in Halo Reach and Halo 4 and should be removed from any future titles. Completely unnecessary and makes the game less fun.

It was perfect in Halo 3, and is someone can’t kill a stunned player with no shields, then the person deserves to get away.

The point was Chief lived and we fall laughable distances compared to that, yet somehow take damage/die.
Also bailing out of vehicles has to have some kind of chance. If you’re just doomed to die as soon as you get in an air vehicle what’s the point in having them? It almost necessitates jetpack to save them from falling damage which I don’t want because I hate the jetpack. Plus, given how easily air vehicles are taken out and the length of the bailout time, I would say it isn’t that difficult to kill a person before they bailout if they even have the option.
I was quite happy without fall damage in Halo 2 and 3. The worst part about it, though, is that awful stun effect upon landing. It’s very, very annoying.

That’s why you’re supposed to be smart with the aircraft. Strafing runs, staying relatively low to the ground when possible, etc.
I like fall damage personally. IMO fall damage makes maps more interesting and complex.

And how are you supposed to make strafing runs and stay low when people spawn with PPs and stickies? Someone on the enemy team is also almost always guaranteed an anti-air weapon from ordinance and DMRs and LRs as well as Snipers wreck the banshee.
Kinda difficult to do what you just said in the face of all of those weapons.
No. The movement and what not needs to go back to what it was in Halo 2 & 3. No fall damage. No pointless delay when you land. Bring the movement speed, jump height, and crispness back to what it was. I just want to have a point to strafing again.
