Should Elites be playable by will again... ?

First of all, sorry if someone made a thread like this! I don’t quite know if you can search topics as of right now, and this has been nagging at me for the longest of times.

Anyway, to the subject at hand. I’m a extreme Halo fan. Read all the books, played the games, etc. One thing I loved about Halo 2 and 3 was when I’m playing online, I can be a dinosaur whenever I want to. Was I the odd one out mostly? Sure! But it was hella fun! Plus, it broke the only seeing Spartans around all the time, which, don’t get me wrong, is quite fine, but it adds to the game for me.

When Reach came out, I was expecting to be able to play as an Elite when I wanted to be for online. I was severely disappointed. I mean, a few friends have said it would make sense, if going by canon standards, but when I’m in a game when Spartans are killing other Spartans, I couldn’t care less about the logic and canon regarding that subject. To be honest, yeah, I liked that Elites healed on their own, and there were a few things that made them instead actually different rather than a re-skinned model. Makes them a bit more intimidating like they actually should be! …Okay, maybe not, but you might get what I mean.

I used to love Invasion, and then it started to get stupid. That being my only way of being an Elite was terrible on Bungie’s part. Not speaking about Elite Slayer either. Skirmish and Inv. Slayer was okay though, but it -always- put me as a friggen spartan. Seriously, I had to have someone in my party to just have a 1% chance of being picked as an Elite! What the heck is the point of the preferred species?
Of course, not speaking about Custom games either. I loved I could play an elite when I wanted to then, when the species wasn’t forced.

I think I’m rambling though. I’ve never been too good at just getting right to my point. But in all seriousness, what do you all think? Since Halo 4 is obviously taking place after 3, it would make sense, in logical terms I guess. Giving them customization like in 3, but the way it worked like in Reach would be grand. Seriously, am I the only one that thought Spartans got a massive amount of love in Reach? I forgot what rank, but you even get all the Elite armor permutations before you’re even really a high rank! That was disappointing as well.

I seriously want to be able to do so myself, if you all couldn’t tell. Forget the healing, and all that extra stuff. I am perfectly fine with it just being a re-skinned spartan model, being the exact same as everyone else. Heck, if Med-packs are in the game, just let them be able to use them as well! Just give it back. Though it would be nice if they still would, if I can play as an Elite when I want, take away all things that made them all unique, 343.

/end rant.

What’s everyone’s thoughts?

Nah, just make everyone a Spartan in normal gametypes.

I’m going to sound awful to some now, but it’s a matter of balance. I know Halo 3’s hitboxes were supposedly the same but it was really off-putting when your shooting an Elite in Halo 3. Halo 3’s SWAT was ruined by people being Elites.

Maybe Elites won’t be in Halo 4 anyway.

I think there should be more then just Spartans and Elites. There should also be playable species in the new enemy group(if there is more then one species). Maybe even play as Brutes? For Infection there could be classic where the zombies are Spartans and then just normal where the infected are the Flood.

Because some say that multiple species make the game types unbalanced certain game types could have a species lock.

Also instead of having to see your Elite in your Spartan colours, you could customize each species the way you want.

I’d really like a mode that lets us play as grunts.

Going back to only Spartans would be downgrading, we need to keep upgrading.
I think it would get kind of dull if we went back to only Spartans. We’ve had Elites in MM since H2.

thissssssssssssssss

If they could find some way so that the hitboxes weren’t as weird with the elites as they were on spartans without entirely making Elites shorter, I don’t see why not, but otherwise no.

.

I would like to see the Elites back for sure!

> What the heck is the point of the preferred species?

The preferred species is for when you play Rumble Pit if your preferred species is set to elite and you play that you will always be an elite

i agree what 343 needs to do instead of looking at reaches flaws and working off of them they need to look at HALO 3 AS A WHOLE and work from that meaning basicly EVERYTHING the way is in halo 3 should be how EVERYTHING should be in halo 4 that would make it a great game but if they do anything that was reach ill be pissed ex aas, credits -Yoink- like that they need to go back to the roots of halo

I think it’s mostly a matter of scaling. Bungie for some reason couldn’t get over the fact that Multiplayer has nothing to do with game Canon and should not be treated as such. Therefore what 343 aught to do is shape a basic stance for Elites that fits INTO Spartan hitboxes, and scale them to be the exact same size in Multiplayer. Simple, effective.

In Reach Elites and Spartans are already shaped the same, if they were just shrunk they wouldn’t need to be all bent and hunchbacked.

And I agree, that the player should be able to represent themselves as any species meant to be a Spartan-equivalent among enemies. That means Brutes specifically should be playable, along with any new “Spartan-ish” enemies in Halo 4. Just make them play like Spartans and Elites, with Shields instead of Power Armor, it’s really not like we are talking about changing the size or health-mechanics of a species in Campaign here.

And if worse comes to worst. The ability to choose your player model can be turned off in SOME ranked playlists, like MLG and SWAT, just to quiet the complainers. Even if it could be PROVEN they are just whining about a difference that doesn’t exist.

cough forunner *cough lol that would be awsome to play as a forunner anyone agree (thank me if u agree lol)

I’m not a personal fan of Forerunners. But they should be playable if they are anything like Spartans/Elites/Brutes, simply because there are others out there who will want them.

they are they have really badass looking armor as well FORERUNNERS FTW

> The preferred species is for when you play Rumble Pit if your preferred species is set to elite and you play that you will always be an elite

You sure about that? All games are spartans from what I’ve seen. Unless it’s Elite Slayer.

But playing as a Brute or a Grunt would be pretty cool too! But armor would be annoying to come up with. Gah. I don’t even want to imagine the work.

I also totally forgot about the model weirdness in Halo 3, and Reach. I remember several times when I shoot one in the head, and it totally does nothing. That is a problem, yes, but why use the same hitbox on both species? Is it impossible to just make a direct-on model hitbox instead of copying the spartan hitbox? Since, they didn’t bother me much, but the Elite model in Reach I highly prefer. The hump-back thing was kinda…weird to me. I don’t know game mechanics well, so I’m not sure if that’s possible or anything. Just curious. Grunts don’t have the same hitbox as spartans, so just because Elites are playable online, doesn’t give an excuse to not make a correct hitbox for their bodies, right? Just have to aim a little higher on them rather than a Spartan. In fact, wasn’t it somehow easier to kill Elite players in Halo 3? I think I read that somewhere. Dunno if it’s true though.

I hardly play MLG or SWAT, so I’m fine with not having elites in that to lower the complaints. But everything else, I want to see them playable at all times. Fix the hitbox, and there shouldn’t be any problems, I would at least imagine. Especially in just a normal slayer game.

As well as elites, you should have always been able to play as a brute. They are practically the same in height and body size and all that.

Those 3 have their own armouries. That would be EPIC!

Yes they should.

I kind of like the way they worked that in Halo: Reach

That’s because Bungie made them so Yoink! hunched over. I’m an Elite player, and I
think if there even in Halo 4(Since were on a Forruner planet and all), they
should be the size they were in CE or Reach.

I love dinosaurs, I miss Halo 2.
