As you guys might have seen in articles like this one, they mentioned that your armour would affect your perks. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I can’t say I’m a fan of cosmetic changes being connected to our perks. Why should we be denied the use of our favourite helmet (being arguably the most distinguishing feature of a player) just because it gives us a certain perk we don’t want, or vice versa?I can’t be the only one that wouldn’t be happy if we didn’t have any cosmetic liberty, especially since Halo Reach had given us so many options concerning how we could change the look of our Spartan without it affecting anything gameplay-wise.
Then again, it’s entirely possible that only small attachments will affect our perks and abilities, keeping the main parts of our Spartans available to us to change as we see fit, which I would be completely ok with. Even if smaller things like legs, arms, etc. affected your perks, that would be fine too. But honestly, I don’t want my Spartan to be a huge lump of metal that I hate to look at sorely because I wanted extra health or whatnot, since it would be a sort of huge slap to the face to the fans who have gotten used to dressing up their Spartans the way they like them. That’s why I’m thiking the base helmet, shoulders and chest shouldn’t affect our perks/abilities, giving players the liberty to choose the main aspects of their character’s looks without worrying about how it will change their way of playing.
I dunno, I just thought I would share all that to see what you guys think of this whole situation.
I actually kinda like this idea but I do hear what your saying, it would be a real pain to wear a helmet that you dont like how it looks but it gives a good perk. Maybe what they can do is have higher ‘tier’ equipment that is harder to unlock but will give you more freedom to choose or appearance and perks.
Yeah I REALLY don’t like the idea of looks being connected to abilities… Hopefully 343 won’t go overboard and will still let us choose certain parts of our armor purely based on their aesthetics.
It would be wrong of them to ignore the fact that they gave us so many aesthetic choices in Reach, and give us less in H4.

Exactly my thoughts. I understand them wanting to add stuff into the game, but to take something out as big as player customization to the player’s will? That’s bound to piss off quite a fair amount of fans.

I’m hoping that the “perks” are all passive benefits. Stuff like resistance to certain kinds of damage (explosions, plasma, bullets, falling). In any case, I’d generally see it as a bonus rather than a detriment.
Besides, wouldn’t you like to be able to see your opponent and size him up right away? If you knew your stuff, you could tell how best to attack an opponent by judging what he’s wearing. That’s neat.

Ultimately, dress-up isn’t too big of a deal, people would still play the game. Gameplay on the other hand…
The fact perks in any form is in Halo has me very, very worried for the future of the franchise. The Halo 2 glory days on XBL seem like a long time ago now. The fact is, Halo was all about everybody spawning on an equal level. 343i has seemed to completely miss what makes Halo so great.
Because at the end of the day, your fancy looking graphics, with it’s tenderly loved for skyboxes won’t sell Halo 4. Your core gameplay will.

That is a very neat idea, yes, though that could easily be achieved without having to change the core look of your Spartan, no?

Very true, gameplay is the most important aspect of it. However, keep in mind that we haven’t seen any true gameplay yet, so we cannot judge how it’s going to be. And even if it is a bit more like CoD than before, that would only serve to bring CoD players to the Halo franchise, giving us more people to play with. The core gameplay seems to be the same as any other Halo game, yet has some fancy stuff stuck onto it. I’m not too worried about it, but I’m not entirely convinced that it will work flawlessly just yet.
PERKS?! Ooooooooohhh, don’t know about that one. I what I’ve read is right: custom load-outs now this? Call me old-fashioned, but Halo has always excelled at making simple gameplay a total joy to play. Though these to items of info make me think Ol’ Frankie’s took the: “we should learn from COD’s success” thang a bit toooo seriously.
Not saying I want a carbon copy of Halo 3, I would like to see new features added to the way we play Halo but not the COD way, please not that way.
I’m trying to keep an open mind, so if 343 pull this off in a balanced, Halo style, then full ratings to them.
Yes I agree i have always used this argument against my friends(COD fans) that games like Halo should be about how skillfull and decisive you are not what perks or what ever you have…everyone should be evenly matched thats how true warriors fight
