I know I can speak for a lot of people when I say Firefight in Reach didn’t have that lasting appeal that ODST’s Firefight had. It went from teamwork and smart, tactical decisions, to jetpacking with fuel rod guns and rockets with infinite ammo and just carelessness. While there was fun, it didn’t last. It wasn’t rewarding to me. Yes, you did receive cR, but there wasn’t anything to it. Firefight should not be like that, or should I say, not focused around that idea. Firefight in Odst felt much more rewarding, suspenseful, and fun than Reach’s Firefight ever was. Should 343 look into what made Odst firefight what it was, while moving it forward, or take on from Reach’s “arcady” feel?
I don’t think there should be a time limit in it either, and you just go for as long as you can which gives you a fair amount of xp/cr/etc whatever it is if they do this in Halo 4.
You begin off normally and not overpowered. There is no time limit. There is a pool of lives and limited weapons’ cache. Enemies get progressively stronger. You can actually BRAG about how well you did in Firefight.
I think there are a lot of elements from ODST’s firefight that got left behind in Reach. Teamwork, vehicles, open maps… a feeling of quiet desperation… I think that’s why I never approached FF the same way in Reach. Arcade was a good idea, but it’s too easy to be lazy and just mindlessly blow things up. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it ended up overshadowing everything that came before it. There’s got to be some sort of incentive to play together as a team in a limited gametype.
While Arcade was fun, just like CoD it was to simple and got boring very fast (exception Fiesta).
What I really missed was the number of enemies and their aggressiveness and skill from ODST, as well as the skulls and the unlimited time but limited lives.
In Reach high level firefight did not mean better AI or more AI, it meant tougher shields and better weapons, difficult but for the wrong reasons.
ODST’s Firefight mode was boring and I got tired of it very quickly. Reach’s, I still play it very often. I mean, FF Arcade, not like a custom game. I only do that for Daily Challenges.
