The shotgun is most definitely my favorite weapon in Halo but it doesn’t have the power it did when I first started playing Reach. I’m pretty tired of going up against someone with the sword and the shotgun just knocking off their shield instead of blowing them away like it should. Shotgun is pretty much the only weapon that can take on a sword but no, they turn the shotgun into a -Yoink- weapon and now the sword wins majority of those battles, or at the very least get the lag lunge in and both die. Or another example would be going up against two people and you try and blast one but he doesn’t fully die and then just get killed by a double melee. I swear you have to be right up in someone’s face in order for the shotty to kill in one hit. This is a POWER weapon meant for close range combat so it shouldn’t take 2 or 3 shots to take someone down when you’re damn near right in their face. Shotgun should basically be a one hit kill every time, that’s what this weapon is for.
Just my personal opinion on how the shotgun should be, thoughts?

What is highlighted made your whole topic invalid, it is meant for CQC, not medium range, the Shotgun is fine.

If you want an “over-powered” shotty(by my standards) play Battlefield 3.
So what you’re saying is that it is perfectly normal for you to have be practically touching the enemy in order for the shotgun to kill in one shot? I don’t think so. Not the best comparison but if this were real life, a shotgun would blow you away from 10 feet with ease, and seeing as this game has a lot of physics(obviously some exaggerated)it would only make sense for a shotgun to be a one hit kill from roughly 3-5 feet away instead of having to be in someone’s grill for that to happen. Don’t get me wrong, the shotty is still a great weapon and has power, but it needs a little more… oomph.

Keep in mind we are playing in 2552 as a super solider and multiplayer & campaign have had all sorts tweaked to keep the game balanced instead of having a Shotgun that can kill people when they are 50+ feet away.
I prefer to go with balance than realism.
Think about this to be perfectly honest, I’m shooting you with my Assault Rifle from behind from lets say, the spawn room on Corvette, you are about to use one of the doors to exit and I am at the other one, you simply turn around and shoot me with a Shotgun while I am many feet away.
The Shotgun is perfect for what it was intended for, CQC, you even pointed it out in your OP.

Like Moa said, balnce >realism
Plus Halo is an arena shooter, and generally in most arena shooters, the shotgun is known as a superclose-cqc weapon withe tendency to oneshot up close, and 10 shot up far
Is it balanced when a sword can lunge from 20 feet away and is an instant kill every time? For that being a CQC weapon it sure is OP especially since there’s no more clashing in most playlists because of TU. That’s not balanced when a shotgun that’s supposed to be CQC can’t even one shot from 2 feet away let alone someone lunging from 20.

It has been fine since Halo 2, the Sword isn’t OP, considering you have 10 goes with it and then its gone, you don’t get to pick up ammo like the shotgun.
A good Shotgunner can easily kill a Sword player if you are careful.
These pellets that the shotgun fires, remember that the further away you are the greater the spread will be. Unless you are shoving the gun in someones face they’re not going to die instantly. On top of that spartans have shields and armour to get through and aiming for the head will result in more damage. As for shotgun vs sword I was on sword base today and a shotgunner was hiding and as I turned a corner bam! dead. As well if you are not playing in a TU playlist you can still sword block, while getting killed from 20 feet away may just be latency. I think the shotgun is fine the way it is, maybe if you use it against someone without any kind of ballistic protection it’ll take them down easier for sure.
The shotgun is a close quarters weapon your probably using it wrong.
> The shotgun is most definitely my favorite weapon in Halo but it doesn’t have the power it did when I first started playing Reach.
The shotgun hasn’t changed since Reach was released, though.
I know how to use the shotgun lol, it’s my 3rd most used weapon (almost 2nd) and I have 18k kills with it. All I’m saying is it should have a little more oomph behind it, I’m not saying make it drastically overpowered. It is in no way a crippled weapon, I can get down with the shotty but I just think it needs a tiny bit more power. I deal with it just fine but I just don’t like that it doesn’t always kill instantly even when I’m point blank from a sword person or anyone else. Many times I have to throw a melee right after shooting just in case they don’t die when they should.

If you want to try and killed someone from a little farther away use a different gun …
The shotgun is fine the way it is .
The Shotgun in Reach has considerably more range in Reach than it did in Halo 2 or 3, I don’t know how you’re using it, but it must not be right.
you use the shotgun in close range, and then switch when they are out of close range
The last thing this game needs is me with a midrange shotgun…lol
Shotty is fine as is.
its fine the way it is, no need for a sniper riffle shot gun.
i have been killed and have killed people with it in Reach when they werent anywhere near me
Youre shooting too early.
Dont feel bad son, it happens to the best of us.

Long range against Elites
Boneyard Tier 3 *sigh

One way of balancing is that the Shotgun is a lot harder to see on a person moving close to you until it’s too late. It is pretty easy to see a Sword guy sprinting to you.
