Shotgun damage not making sense

I have tested this several times. I will walk up to a person and get a point blank headshot and the wont die. The only shotgun that has worked consistently with has been the scattershot and its variants. A point blank headshot will usually take between half or all of the opponents shield. But if you stand back a little a body shot will be a one hit kill. Is the shotgun a little buggy or do I misunderstand the purpose of a shotgun?

To be honest with a shotgun you want to aim for center mass, as it shoots pellets and not a singular bullet like a slug round.

A headshot is a smaller area so less pellets are likely to land. I’m not sure if there’s a damage multiplayer for a headshot or not.
With the main body being a larger target more pellets are likely to hit therefore doing more damage. This is especially true at range, if you’re aiming for the head you’re hardly likely to hit.

I agree with TheDonCJG because even in real life you don’t aim for the head, center mass does the most damage.

Let me explain.
The shotgun in halo has a circle reticle. This is here for a reason. The shotgun fires many small pellets, all landing within the circle. The goal is to connect as many of them as possible.
Do you see where I’m going with this?
Like the other two people said, if you aim for the head, you aren’t going to deal very much damage, because the head is small, the spread is large. It’s also unlikely that the H5 shotgun has a headshot multiplier of any sort. Alternatively, if you aim for the body, which, at its effective range, is as large as the shotgun’s spread, you’re going to land more pellets, dealing likely fatal amounts of damage.
If you’re that bent on trying to get fatal headshots, you can aim in on the head with the shotgun, choking the spread and likely ensuring your point blank headshot kill.
Hope this helps

You should shoot to the body, also do scope, the first variation is not effective at all but the others are good, specially if you do scope.

Anyone else have major problems with the Oathsworn? I swear I can never do as well with it compared the other shotguns/ Scattershot variants!

I wouldn’t waste my time selecting an Oathsworn.

Oathsworn is probably the worst shotgun in the game. Considering it’s a legendary weapon it’s overshadowed by every other variant available

Dont try to headshot with a shotgun of all things. Just no point in doing that. You want all the pellets to hit your target, aim for the chest/center mass where all the pellets are likely to hit. Even with Halo 5s massive bullet magnetism you can still miss the small headboxes of people.

The Scattershot is good at it because the Scattershot is just flat out good as a weapon. I would take it over a standard shotty at least.

Shotgun is rough. One I never took the time to get good with. Those who have seem to be unnaturally good with it. Good luck with it.
