Short cooldowns for throwing grenades in MP

There should be a 5 second cooldown on throwing a grenade in multiplayer to reduce the grenade spam. In all previous Halo games you can just stock up on grenades and spam them. A short delay would make throwing a grenade a more skill based decision: is this the best use of my grenade? Should I save it until more enemies are here? How can I coordinate throwing my grenade with my team. If I throw it now I could miss it and wont have another one, should I wait a second? It isn’t a major change, it just reduces the ability to just throw grenades all over the place to get yourself out of trouble.

I’m not sure they’ll make such a huge change to the sandbox, but I could certainly see them reducing the starting number of grenades to one in most modes and have fewer available on the map. That said: equipment may make a real difference to them (think of all the times you could use a bubble shield to counter grenade spam in H3)

To be honest that would probably be enough. Start with one grenade, fewer around the map, maybe limit the amount of grenades you can carry to 2 of each.

It’s certainly already a limit of 2 per type on Halo 5 already which still suffers from some grenade spam, but not as much as e.g. H3 - can’t see them going back the way on that

Ah good. I play Halo on PC so I havent played much of Halo 5 but max 2 grenades per type is way better. If you start with one grenade and there were fewer around the map grenade spam would definitely become much less common.

Yeah plenty of Halo 5 modes have already done this so I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s actually one of the areas where I feel eSports has made a positive contribution to the balancing

yes, I was playing King of the Hill last night and was getting so frustrated with because it was instant death to go anywhere near the hill because of the spam. I agree that limiting the grenade count and availability is the right answer, not increasing the throwing cooldown. I haven’t played H5 in ages so I do recall how much of a problem it is in that game.

I don’t think you should worry about cooldowns on grenade throwing when we haven’t even seen the multiplayer. Grenades are likely going to be less effective than they were in Halo 5 because advanced mobility has been canned, so the radius will likely be a little more sane, and on top of that, equipment has returned.

This will incentivize grabbing equipment, who knows if the bubble shield is returning, but I have a hunch it will be. Even the deployable cover we saw in the gameplay reveal could be used to limit the spam. Even this speculation doesn’t hold much weight though, like I said, we haven’t seen any multiplayer gameplay so we have nothing to really go on.

I think without quite as many advanced movement abilities as compared to Halo 5, the grenade blast radius for all grenades will probably be less wide. Their damage will also probably be toned down a bit since it will be less easy to dodge. Grenade spam has always been a part of Halo, especially in some of the older games where you could carry 4 of everything. Halo 3 does seem to have a bit of a delay between grenade throws, although it certainly isn’t five seconds long. I think that is a good pace to go with although think somewhere between Halo 3 and Halo 5 is my preference.

Since grenades are apart of Halo’s “Golden Triangle” of Guns, Grenades and melee, putting such a cooldown would really suffocate that part of the sandbox imo. Five full seconds is a long time in the context of an arena shooter.

From Halo 3 onward, grenade spam certainly became less compared to Halo 2. It felt to be in a pretty decent place in Halo 5 and so using that as a framework would be an ideal starting point. I think having a touch fewer on the map would be good to keep down on the “spam” or maybe just having players start with one BUT it is very much apart of the Halo combat.

Yeah I think you’re right. I havent played much Halo 5 so my experience was more from Halos 2 - 4 and recently with MCC got back into Halo and the grenade spam can get pretty annoying. I have heard it was far better in Halo 5 however so I think just starting with 1 and fewer grenade pickups on the map would be the better solution.

Absolutely no cooldown. Just limit the grenades to 2 of each. Limiting cooldowns takes away some grenade shot opportunities and ultimately ruins the formula for people who have played this game for almost 2 decades.

one grenade is pretty good in the balancing, I play halo 5 a lot and I don’t come across grenade spamming in arena game modes, but I do occasionally see a entrance blocker with infinite grenades on a gungoose

Definitely. Gungooses are not particularly common though and apart from a couple of very uncommon spots where they’re very well shielded you can normally deal with them fairly easily

Grenades in H5 are stupid powerful, a single hit no matter the range will at least strip your shield. No reason to start with 1 grenade when the trilogy balanced grenades well enough with 2 up to 4.
