Shocked at how bitter this community has become

I posted on Reddit earlier (… I know, I know) talking in support of Halo Infinite and how, in my opinion, it does look next-gen but is currently suffering from graphical bugs that can be ironed out prior to launch.

I then went on to say that graphics should be secondary to gameplay. I used Halo 4 as an example: amazing graphics for the era, but seen as inferior to Halo 3 in terms of gameplay, thus seen as a worse game overall (for the most part.)

For expressing my opinion, I was called a dunce, a -Yoink!- for being ‘blind’, my rebuttals were downvoted to hell, and it really left a bitter taste in my mouth about what this community has become. I know it’s reddit, and I know it’s not entirely representative, but from what I’m seeing there is a sizeable portion of this community that shouts down any positivity about post-Bungie era Halo.

Nothing ever seems to be good enough. Honestly if I were 343, I’d say -Yoink- it and abandon the whole damn thing. I even put in my Reddit post that 343 should have ironed out or otherwise covered up the bugs in the demo, which I 100% believe they should have done. But to be spoken to like dirt because of my opinion has really, for lack of a more nuanced phrase, pissed me the -Yoink- off.

It’s a stupid thing to get annoyed about I know, especially with everything going on in the world right now. I just wanted to vent lol.

It’s all good fella, there are plenty of people with you.

I wouldn’t be surprised if 343 are withholding further content now due to the disappointing number of topics here and on other platforms. They may be double thinking their strategy, maybe I’m overthinking it. Generally reception is positive but I hope that vocal minority doesn’t result in them taking longer to release more info.

Reddit is a hive mind, it’s good looking at stuff in hot, but new is generally horrible for most subs. A lot of individuals are supremely toxic as well, especially in new (you just don’t see it unless you look at new topics or sort by controversial but there is loads of it). Depends on the subreddit mind as loads are also fantastic and treat new people and opinions very well. Halo’s is desperate right now if you don’t say 343 bad, graphics are bad.

Understandable mate. Me personally the demo didn’t really sell it as next gen graphics and the annoucement that ray tracing is coming post launch is disappointing. As long as the gameplay is fun I don’t see why it can’t be a killer title.

Welcome to the Internet.

first time in the forum? They have been bitter since H2

The demo really wasn’t next gen graphics, this generation has seen graphics like that and much better already, but the game does still look great which I think people are overshadowing just because they weren’t blown away by the graphics. If you watch there ‘Become step inside’ trailer those are amazing graphics. I think making people wait for 5 years and then showing them something somewhat lack luster was the mistake. Personally I think the graphics look good and they’re going to look better when it releases and the gameplay is closer to what I liked about Halo 3.

I just don’t like judging things without knowing the full picture. Campaign is only a fifth of halo. Yes, the graphics were bad, 343 is well aware. You should understand that some people felt like they were misled, and are therefore angry, but this is only a small fraction of players. On a place like reddit or waypoint, your going to see some dedicated halo fans. There’s plenty of non-vocal halo fans awaiting the next announcement.

At least on waypoint there’s no downvote button, lol.

How they’ve become… I remember when Halo 3 was called a piece of doodoo back in the day on Bungie Forums. Now its regarded as one of the greatest Halo games. Heck I even remember people saying they should remove the name “Halo” from Halo Reach because they hated it so much. I’m actually waiting for the day people start regarding Halo 5 as a great Halo game on these forums.

I know, this community disappoints me as well, and I am one of the Bungie Era Halo fans. What was shown so far excites me, I could care less if the graphics aren’t so photo-realistic that I could reach out and pinch a Grunts cheeks. The game is being developed to function on all versions of the Xbox One, Series X, Pc’s ect, there are going to be some graphical downgrades that have to be made to accomidate the multiple versions of the game, still however, given they would have had nearly a year’s worth of development from the demo to release gives me confidence the graphics will improve, that been the one strong suit 343 has always been good at.

We do not live in 2007 anymore, games have evolved to a point that, the simple and basic gameplay of Halo’s past just won’t survive in todays market. What I saw though was definately the best compromise we could have hoped for, and again we have yet to see multiplayer and they already specified that the equipment in the campaign will work differently from how they work in the campaign means their is a possibility other abilities will work differently as well. Heck what if multiplayer doesn’t even have sprint or clamber, I know its unlikely but its not impossible, if 343 is trying to keep the modern stuff in the campaign and bring the multiplayer back to classic. Lets give 343 more time to reveal more of the game before final judgements are made. I am already sold on the campaign but the multiplayer is where I will be deciding if this is what I will be playing for the next 10 years or not.

I get people are frustrated, but we are never going to get a complete reconversion back into Halo 3, I am certain if 343 even tried, Microsoft, and every investor, they have would be screaming at them to not do that. We at this point for better or for worse are going to have to accept sprint, clamber and other abilities as they are just so mainstream now. We need to remember that not even in the classic games, were all the mechanics completely unique, Halo CE did not invent the idea of Energy Shields, nor Halo 2, reviving Health. Nor did Halo 2 or 3 invent duel weilding, and what was Halo 3’s Forge, but a simplified version of a pc map editor for consoles. These were not entirely new ideas, so I fail to see how Halo utilizings these trends makes it any worse than the games that copied halos sandbox mechanics or forge or theater modes. Games share from eachother, that is just the way it is, and the gaming industry today is much more expansive than it was back then, those simplified mechanics just would not be enough in todays age without something extra added to it to spice it up.

I was thinking about making a post about this myself. We shouldn’t take others opinion as criticism on our own.
As a community we should embrace and accept eachothers opinions, we don’t have to agree. Halo means somehitng different to all of us, and thats brilliant.
I was sad when I saw Sean W’s video the other day which was about quote “shutting down” people who are negative towards Infinite, really trying to push them down, and make them sound stupid, it’s not ok. Listen to them instead and try understanding their point of view, or don’t, that’s fine too but we careful what you say to people then.
There is no such thing as an argument that makes someones “opinion” wrong.
BUT I wan’t to mention this goes both ways, I have seen people who think it’s it’s equally important to proove people who like Infinite wrong, which is pointless.
Be happy for those who like Infinite so far, they deserve a good Halo game. I wish we could all have it but that isn’t always the case.

Give arguments for why you disagree with each other (great fun) but remember that at the end of the day it’s just different views. There are no wrong opinions. And “Halo” is not the same thing for all of us!
PEACE

I think, most people like myself were incredible disappointed by the visuals since we expected that a flagship title like Halo that will lunch with a brand new console generations could look at least a little bit better than current gen game offerings. We of course only saw a little bit of the game but for me personally Gears 5 looks better on Xbox one X than Halo Infinite or XSX at this cannot happen, gameplay is king and I agree that I prefer to have less than ideal graphics as long as the gameplay is great but… Why not both? I’m sure resources over this last 5 years were abundant, and maybe this was the issue specially since MS uses tons of contractors and on a huge project like this that is never good, the core team cannot be comprised of people that stay 1 year and leave so I think this is a problem with the current 343 structure as well (following MS guidelines).

A game like halo may not be the best graphical game ever but at least a little more attention to detail was expected, just to name a few:

No skidmarks when driving warthog
Horrible scripted path of the ships (this was pretty scary to be honest)
PBR that makes everything look like cheap plastic
No facial expressions on enemies
Aliased edges, seems like the game is using VRS leading to same areas to be 720p
Shimmering
Horrendous pop in
Agreessive LOD
Static vegetation

I could bring some more, all this only 3 months way from release, miracles will not happen, again, I didn’t expect to the the best showcase ever but I didn’t expect to be worse then the best current gen games. Horizon Zero Dawn (I know different type of games but still open world) looks so much better that is not even funny (not even talking about RDR2).

I think all the harassment against you is total -Yoink-. But in the end, the demo and everything we have seen so far, leaves a lot to be desired. I’ll disagree with you with respect however. I think it’s wonderful we have a fair balance of positivity and constructive (negative) feedback in order to keep the team of 343 motivated, but also bring the necessary change for the game. xx

The subreddit is just no fun at all. A lot of angry people, too many hardcore fanboys not accepting different opinions (I once got tons of hate simply for stating I didn’t feel like H3’s campaign delivered on the promise of an all out war to save Earth…because H3 is holy over there). Too many echo chambers of same opinions. Just check Halo Story. That subreddit is a lot more fun and insightful.

But truth be told: the community has always been like this. I was very active on B.net during the time between H2-H3 and my God there was a lot of hate for 2. Same with Reach. And so on. Funny thing is a lot of those games will receive a lot more praise and/or approval after a few new games.

I’d just stay here if I was you  A lot of negativity too…but not as much as there.

I support you man, I am hopeful for the game. If you truly care about the Halo series, you shouldn’t want it to fail because it has new changes. People forget Halo 2 had a website dedicated to hating it that lasted for more than decade before it got shut down. Halo: Reach still has a website up saying it isn’t canon. No Halo game is perfect, but people are destroying the game before giving it a chance. Don’t even get me started on the FB groups, all they talk about is Craig, the joke went down faster than the Autumn at this point.

I am hopeful that the game does well… perhaps they can shift public perception into their favor after the multiplayer reveal.

The issue that many people have is that what we got in 2020 looks worse than what the game promised in 2018. Instead of lush environments we got grass popping out right in front of us and hexagonal pillars littering the vista.

I know the scale is unprecedented for a Halo game but perhaps they bit off more than they could chew.

Believe me, this ain’t nothing compared to the days of the Reach beta. But still, given 343’s track record and how Halo has fallen from the top of the mountain under their direction, it’s kind of hard not to be jaded and cynical as one of the Grizzled Ancients. Especially after that lackluster reveal.

Well, at least it looked better than Halo 5. While that’s not a very high bar to clear, it’s something.

You’re absolutely right, and that’s why people are really only mad about the graphics, because the demo did show good gameplay. It’s even more valid a criticism considering how good the engine demo in 2018 looked and how powerful they’ve been touting the XBXS was. Graphics are one of the lesser issues when it comes to a game overall, but when you’ve been hyping how good a game is going to look for years, the flagship title of the next generation console no less, there really is a reasonable expectation that it should look astounding, or at least as good as Halo 5. It is luckily, as far as I know, an easier problem to fix.

Of course the name calling and crap is completely uncalled for, but some people are always gonna take some things way too seriously.

Just avoid the landmine of such topics I find that to be a lot easier rather than trying to convince almighty brick wall that thinks it can’t be knocked down when in actual fact it can just like everyone expectations.

This. The Halo community has been…snappy, since 2004. It’s just that the Web wasn’t as big then as it is now. I couldn’t even comprehend what the meltdown would be like if Halo 2 released today with all it’s cut content and downgraded graphics (Note: this isn’t a jab at H2, it’s an amazing game regardless of its faults). I’d suggest taking a break from Waypoint for a while until things cool down a bit.
