I was doing a legendary run on halo 3 earlier and my son asked me why I can’t pick up a jackyls shield… I didn’t have a better answer than you just can’t and dismissed it.
Now it’s bugging the crap outa me… Every weapon they introduce in the game they’ve let us play with in some way shape or form. Except the shield…
He wanted me to pair it with the sword which I personally think would overpower the sword unless they disabled lunge when shield was equipped. But even by itself the shield would be a good pickup. Just give it an energy bar like the sword or any plasma weapon and let it absorb a certain amount of bullets before it breaks…
Or could make it behave like a turret where you couldn’t run fast but could use your own gun until it depleted.
Anyways now I’m obsessing on the thought, I wanna hear what other people think about it though.
Thoughts, ideas, critique… ramblings? Throw them at me.
There have been some mods that enable you to pick up it, though I wouldn’t really want it to function as a dual wielding pickup cos’ that just feels too overpowered, it would be neat to see it officially introduced and be used similar to a riot shield for other games, only that this shield can be taken down with a moderate amount of force so it functions more of a last resort tool than a get out of jail free card.

Not to mention that the Jackel shield combined with the Spartan shield would ensure the wielder would survive any one on one encounter.
Halo 3: ODST would have been the perfect game for it to be useable.
I believe they may have once had plans for something with the shields. Back in the original 2000 E3 trailer for Halo, they did have an Elite wielding an Energy Sword in one hand and a Shield in the other But the Hardlight Shield is about as close as we can get at the moment.
I’m guessing if its ever been tested it never lead to terribly great gameplay, given the AI mostly just spams spots so it would be somehwat unreliable but powerful defensive barrier, that’d be way too easy to get a hold of because most jackals have one.

The art of halo book mentions it was Elites that were supposed to have arm shields until they decided to give it to the Jackals who were missing a role. The spiky thins on their left arm is a remnant of the time they were supposed to be the generators. Given it was meant to be part of the elite’s armor still, I doubt chief was supposed to be able to pick it up.
Its also why elites hold every weapon in 1 hand in CE, they’re still posing as if they had the shield.

It could have been possible in the future if they had stuck with it.
Also could you imagine Halo 2 on Legendary if they had shields too?
Jackal shields are attached to little gauntlets that they wear. The only reason you can’t carry it around is probably because the gauntlet is too small for you or something.
While it’s a cool idea, hard to see it happennig though. Deploying a shield from a pickup is probably the closest we get to a using a shield.

I doubt it’ll ever make much of a return. The shields are iconic to jackals and elites have enough going for them as is.

I never found elites in halo 2 particularly troublesome.
Now on brutes on the other hand, that’d be annoying.

They actually do utilize stolen jackal shields in Fall of Reach with mjolnir armor.

still think it would be cool if we assassinated a jackal and ripped their gauntlet off

I agree that the shields are now the Jackals area, the only other would be, and it would be a stretch, would be a new Jackal based Flood.
and really the Elites give me more trouble than the Brutes. But I guess that is the nice part of the Halo community, we each have different playing styles.
