Hello, I made this thread to see what the community thinks of the two different shield mechanics that have been introduced to the series thus far. Namely, the shield mechanics from H2 and H3 (haven’t played CE online) and the mechanics newley introduced via Reach.
For those unaware of the differences, here are the +'s and -'s of both systems.
First, the older mechanic:
With this mechanics shields does not have to be “popped” in order for you to be shot and killed. If your shields are low enough and then you take a hit that your shields cannot cover, such as a melee or head shot, you will die. So with the BR, it takes four head shots to kill a player, and many more body shots thus a much longer kill time if you are unable to hit the targets head consistently. However this also allows for AR beat downs, which, means a player using the AR will fire all the way up to you, so your shields will be at about 30-40% then he will punch you and you will die, not a particularly skillful tactic.
- Promotes skill and accuracy, forces a player that wants to be good to aim for the head at all times.
+Promotes awareness, if you’re low on shields, a stray bullet can still kill you.
+Skilled grenade play is promoted, in that if your grenade takes ALMOST all of their shields, you can 1sk them.
- Promotes rushing, makes the AR>Beat Down combo much more effective and probably damages C.Q.C. in other ways as well.
The Shield Mechanic introduced with Reach:
With this mechanic, regardless of how low your shields are, if you have even a sliver left, it will absorb head shots (other than sniper rounds) and melee hits. With this mechanic, it takes 4 DMR rounds anywhere on the target to pop its shields, and then one headshot to kill.
- Prevents AR rushing/beating down
+/- Adds versatility, Promotes use of explosives and power weapons that will power through shields. While versatility is good, this can lead to Pweapon betrayals and grenade spamming.
-
Promotes the “No0b Combo” (Plasma pistol>Head shot)
-
Promotes body shots, killed players are punished in that even if they are getting head shots and the enemy is getting body shots, only the last shot makes a difference.
So, please discuss, should Halo 4 go back to the old shield mechanics of H2&3, Keep the mechanics players are currently used to in Reach, or come up with its own. If come up with its own, explain what it should be like. Discuss =)
Note thanks to GristlyStew721: The term Bleedthrough is used to describe whether or not a hit taken “bleeds through” into your health, even if you have shields still. bleedthrough is used in all cases in the old mechanic and only on explosives and power weapons in Reach.
