Share Your Screenshots, Tips, and Tricks

> MrMartini85, I also do like your ‘Skyline’ themed photo. I get the photo based upon the title and what you utilized in the photo. From what I can tell, the Spartan-IV fired a ‘flare’ from the Magnum FLR to call for the hornet, which responded and is shining light onto the Spartan-IV. That is a well-thoughtout idea. ‘hazop3’ aka ‘Scattershot’ is rather nice as well. You used a nice combination of angles and the Juicy FX for the screenshot. Well done with your new screenshots.

On the contrary! It was an accident, I was taking a wide shot to get the whole skyline, but I just happened to zoom in, which with forced perspective made the Hornet look like it was right on top of the Spartan.

“Free Willy” made me laugh out loud.

Considering I have some free time on my hands tonight, let me see what I can share with you to help with future photos. I know combination of certain FXs on most maps can give a better feel to an image. You can combine Juicy with Colorblind to bring out a slightly darker, but slightly more vivid colorscale to your map. Juicy with Next Gen can produce mixed results, so when utilizing those, look around to see what you can find. Nova with Juicy can produce some unique color FX on darker maps when combined with lighting from gadgets. Here’s a
recent example .

Certain weapons can give off unique FX as well. Gravity Hammers, Railguns, and Incineration Cannons are exceptionally good weapons for this, especially combined with FX from Gadgets. Here’s a gravity hammer example , an incineration cannon example , and a railgun example . Grenades too from their explosions can create FX.

Armor abilites as well can create certain FX. Hardlight Shields, Autosentrys, and Regeneration Field can all produce FX. In particular, you can use the Autosentry’s explosion when combined with Gadget FX and lights for certain effects, such as for example Vertigo FX, blurred FX, and even altered light FX.

Certain Maps have unique elements to them as well, which can provide FX. Shatter is great for bioluminiscent FX. Vertigo has the electrical effect, which can be utilized for some awesome FX. Landfall has a bright sun, which when combined with certain gadget FX can create a neat scene, as seen in this example. Monolith has some neat lighting in it, which can be utilized for FX. Impact has such a vartiety of background lights and FX by itself, there is a lot you can get from that. Certain actions from certain game types can also give certain FX as well. Ballassassinations, Flag captures, Grifball Goals, Ricochet Goals are all examples that do so.

Other FX I know:
Machine Gun Turret+Juicy+Angling=‘Pink Will O the Wisp’
Regicide King Kill with Pulse Grenade=Firework FX
Incineration Cannon explosion+Frag Grenade Explosion+Angling=Dynamic Explosion
Shatter Map+Juicy+Nova+Gadget Lights(Color of your Choice)=Luminescent FX
Purple Light+Grav Lift+Juicy+Next Gen=Dynamic Purple Lighting(Works well on Abandon)
Impact Map+Ordnance Drops outside of play area=‘Meteors’
Active Camo+Powerup =Glowing Spartan of powerup color. You can add Juicy for more dyanic FX.

Not counting glitching(As in out of map/accessing interiors that are otherwise inaccessible), this is what I know, and I hope this can be the first steps to helping you develop better FX Mecha Sh0ckwave. Have a great night and let me know if this helps you out at all.

Edit: Mini Slayer on the Team Action Sack playlist can yield some pretty unique FX and photos as well.

Okay guys here is the full list of screenshots I’m entering for the skyline theme this week

Add me on Xbox, Mecha! The only person I ever snap pics with is Stealth4ce, and we’re rarely on at the same time. Having only one controller, my subjects can get pretty limited too. I’d love to fuel your interest in screenshots. So if you truly are wanting to learn more, I’ll happily share what I can. This goes for anyone in here too. However, I have been very inactive on the Xbox trying to balance work and school, but I’ll hop on as often as I can. c:

I don’t suppose I could get some feedback on these? ^^; sorry if I’m taking up space on this thread.

Blue red

This is all for now, but more is coming soon!

Good evening everyone! It’s been a while since I posted here and there’s been plenty of activity since then! Glad to to see some new faces amongst the Screenshot regulars and also some older faces returning too!

With so many Screenies submitted since I was last here, it took me around an hour to wade through it all and enjoy what everyone’s been submitting! Some fantastic Purple and FOTUS pieces, especially to those who got their work featured! I finally ended up having a c-c-c-combo breaker! with me not having a Screenshot featured in last week’s Bulletin, but hey ho, this new Skyline theme’s certainly giving me some good vibes in making some new content!
I sadly cannot really give much feedback since there’ve been so many Screenies posted since my last visit here, but I’ll make a post dedicated to it soon on some of the most recent pieces so stay tuned!

In regards to my own work, I’ve taken quite a number since I was last here, as can be seen in my “Recent Screenshots”, ranging from the Sword and FOTUS theme, along with the new Skyline theme too:

 • Counter Intelligence - I played around with the Next Gen and Colorblind FX on the Harvest map to get the darkened effect for this piece, along with giving my spartan the Damage Boost effect to help add some extra texture. I do live the lighting the CIO helmet gives to stick out against the darkened background.
 • Raised Blade - This piece managed to get featured as the cover of the Halo Bulletin a fortnight ago, which I’m very pleased and grateful about. I basically just played Clang of the Hill on Abandon and had my Spartan stand at the edge of the hill to get the purple background behind him. Originally this was for the Purple theme, but I guess it got love for its Swordy goodness in the end.

Elsewhere, I had a nice surprise when I unlocked a Spartan Assault “Classified” bonus on Halo Waypoint and got not only the Boot symbol, but also a new armour skin for the Air Assault and CIO armour!

 • AA Sprint - I really loved the new Air Assault look and decided to play about with it using purple and white on my Juicy and Colorblind FX’d Vertigo map to get some nice shadowy contrasts. The orange striped DMR on the back is also unlocked too and I’m glad with how it contrasts with the dark purple of the Spartan.

 • BRAVO DMR - With the FOTUS theme, I sadly lacked the armour, so I relied on what footage I had with the FOTUS armour being present. In the end, before I got the help of Snickerdoodle I only had the footage of when I played B is for Bravo from the Community Playdate. It was pretty difficult to get a good Screenshot, as I had no control over the Spartan and had to just find a good moment to get a nice piece. In the end I’m happy with this result, considering it’s raw footage with no FX or anything.

The next bunch below features Snickerdoodle, who kindly allowed me to do a Custom Game with her on a Juicy, Colorblidn and Next Gen FX’d Shatter map with her in her Green Army Grifball colours. As before with Bravo’s piece, I had no control over what Snickerdoodle was doing, so I just worked out what looked best as we messed around a little:

 • Green Sniper - This turned out to be my most popular FOTUS piece, with Snickerdoodle sprinting through one of shatter’s caves and the green lightingt around her. I’m glad her purple visor managed to stick out nicely against the rest of the piece.
 • Sam Charge - The sunlight on shatter can really add a great golden glow on a Spartan with the FX mentioned above being used. It looks great on contrasting colours too as I found with this piece
 • Pistol Switch - A nice simple one of Snickerdoodle switching to her Plasma Pistol in a dark spot of the map, so her lights stick out nicely against the darkness. Simple, but I like it a lot.
 • Shadowlight - Whilst playing about with effects with lizking, Lucy and Cryodragon, I’ve only taken the one Screenshot thus far (more to come though…mwahahaha!) where I got this lovely black and white piece where the flare from firing the Battle Rifle lights up my Spartan.

And now onto the Skyline pieces, I’ve brought some older Screenshots back into my Fileshare, which I took when the first ever theme was put up (being Sniper), thus City Watch is in my spotlight once again!
More recently, I’ve also taken some new pieces that are based off of the GrifballHub logo as it looks very nice in Skyline. Of course, Juicy and Colorblind are my featured FX once again.

 • Hornet EOD - Following what a lot of people have been doing, featuring the hornet and the “glare stripes” it provides, I decided an oddball addition would help make mine look a little more unique, thus making this piece.
 • White Punch - This was taken whilst running past one of the pillars leading you outside form Gate 18’s location. I like the simplistic background so the focus is on the Spartan, but there’s also a little texture so it’s not utterly plain.
 • Grif Legacy - This is a tribute to the classic GrifballHub logo, which features a Halo 3 EOD Spartan in white.
 • Mindoro Logo - Focusing on something separate from the classic sky line look I decided to give the Mindoro logo a Screenshot as I love how it looks. It’d a shame it’s a little too pale, but it’s something different.
 • I Am R 17 - Naturally, since there’s a Gate 17, I couldn’t resist not doing a piece or two featuring my own gamertag and lucky number.
 • Romeo 17 - A different pose form above, so the my Midland Base symbol features nicely on the shoulder, as it is my Halo home.

And that’s all from me! Keep up the great posts folks!

I went into theater for a Big Team game with some potential for Mantis shots and while I was looking around I watched a ghost disappear. (not that kind of ghost…) I finally found where it had teleported.

Yes, Mecha, add Tayderp. He is a mastermind. Not only is he very skilled with navigating Halo effects, but he is also remarkably willing to help anybody and I think if you learned from him you’d be exposed to some very unique techniques.
Ooh. Unique techniques. That’s fun to type.

Anyway feel free to add me as well. I’d love to help you out. I’ve also been working on some various effect tutorials and I’ll definitely work on them more soon if the demand is high enough. For now I just have a basic run-through here. But… I don’t think I’ll be updating that sight so I will probably just write up another one. Actually two. One for Reach and one for Halo 4, since right now my walkthrough spans both.

Anyway I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Welcome Home John - My favorite out of this group. As Stealth4ce pointed out, I love how John looks unsure of this place and how it seems rather new/different. It’s almost as if there is a hint of sarcasm in the “Welcome home”. You angled the spartan well as he overlooks the city. Also it may have been subconscious, but following the rule of thirds really helped the balance of the shot as that building is on the right and the spartan on the left, creating focal points to digress from. There’s not much I don’t like about the shot. It might have been nice to get closer to the spartan, but maybe that’s personal bias. Overall, great job on this one.

Gold - I’m not a fan of screenshots that are effect driven to be honest, and that’s what this seems like to me. It’s great to know as many effects you can possibly utilize, but they definitely do not make a shot. Also, you should avoid distracting things that are not constructive such as the sniper on his back; such a thing can break the flow of a shot such as a stray paintstroke on a painting. However, the pose and positioning of the shot was well done.

Target in Range - Here I see you do have a theme/subject to the shot. Again, the Carbine is quite distracting as the sniper was in the previous shot. You seem to do well with the Rule of Thirds, but the spartan is a little low in the shot in my opinion, leaving a lot of negative space above him. How you positioned the background subject in the center works really well here, though.

Now for a spiel about color scheme. When using different effects, you really want to keep color scheme in mind. You have the spartan a combination of gold and purple, which is nice saying how they have high contrast. However, the blue doesn’t fit the color scheme and kind of chops up the shot. It’s almost as if it is a picture pasted on another. Also, you want to avoid all that white space that is in Target in Range unless, of course, it is part of the composure of the screenshot. The color scheme in Welcome Home John and Search is consistent; notice how everything in those two shots comes together has one whole piece of art. That is the effect you want from a screenshot.

Search - As I said, the color scheme works here with the cool, washed out colors. The Hornet is positioned well in one corner, and the bigger buildings in the opposite, giving good balance. The whole thing comes together nicely with the theme of the Hornet searching for something in the city.

Good luck with snapping more pictures, and I look forward to see more!

Hey guys, just thought I would share with you my screenshots for Skyline this week. Can I get some feedback?
Anger

The City Of Mindoro

@TayDerp

First of all thank you very much for the feedback!

I’m glad you like “welcome home John” and fun fact with the rule of thirds thing, I actually took a two year photography course at college sooo I guess the rule of thirds got hard wired into my brain.

Gold and target in range

After looking at the images again after your comments I have to agree I guess I had a moment where I thought the dark gold and bright pink/purple looked good. But thank you for the comments on posing and background.

Search

It’s funny because the only thing I used was a plasma grenade for the effect, plain and simple!

Thanks again for your feedback tayderp and I hope we can play a game or two in the future and even take a few screenshots or something

Attention lizking10152011!

Someone tagged your screenshot “Cyan Visor” (probably your best) with “Stop Making Screenshots” … don’t do it! (I know you wouldn’t actually stop, but hear me out!)

Trolls are lonely and miserable people who get their kicks trashing others. I hear they also live under bridges and like riddles. You are not to feed the trolls, BTW.

The point I’m getting to is this: Your screenshot got trolled! Congratulations! Only the best are worth trolling. That means you’ve made it. Keep up the good work!

Today’s little theme is …

THE LIBRARY (feat. the flood!):

“Follow closely. This portal is the first of 10”

“You Brought Such Ineffective Weapons to Combat the Flood”

“Speed is of the Essence”

"…Unfortunately, My Usefulness to this Particular Endeavor has Come to an End.

And a regular one featuring my Fiancee’s Spartan:
Too Late

I also had a question: Do you qualify for the Photographer Medal if one of your screenies was featured in the Screenshot Spotlight? I sent a message to bs angel as instructed a few days ago … and maybe I’m just being impatient.

Well I took this shot and the texture is what really made me keep it. Lemme know what you guys think c:

Peaceful Rest

I like the way you think!

My favorite of your most recent post was “You brought such ineffective weapons to combat the flood”

My photographer medal showed up a couple of weeks after my screenshot was included in a screenshot spot light. There were several of us that received ours at the same time.

I had the library idea, and I knew doing it in Forge to have the AI (spark) would make “Chief’s” green be off, but “Juicy” and “Olde Timey” fixed that problem. (kind of)
The thing is, I spent a lot of time on the set up for those shots and wasn’t happy with a single one. But, recreating Combat Evolved in Halo 4 is not easy.

The Linda 058 batch I was really happy with and one of them has nearly 400 downloads, so thanks to whomever!

Tayderp! Peaceful Rest is cool. I like the abstract / surrealist approach. I tagged it as such. I’m all for more abstract Halo art. It’s good stuff.
