Shame on you 343 and Microsoft

I’ve been a loyal fan of this franchise since the beginning, before I had children. Now, my youngest and I (who is 9 1/2), have been going through the Halo campaigns starting with CE in order to get him going in the story line and engaged in the series. We’ve been having a really good time doing this and with the SUPER hot days of summer we’ve had this year it has been a great way to pass time since a trip to the park to throw the ball around just wasn’t an option. Every clip I could get my hands on of Halo 5 I’d share with him and we have been PUMPED. He’s also had groups of friends over who would turn on split screen and play forge or TDM or whatever and would have a blast doing so. This is the sole reason I’ve purchased 4 controllers (when they are on sale. I’m not paying $60 for a controller).

Now, with Halo 5, all of that fun is going to cease. My excitement level has dropped to nil for this game and I’ll probably just pick up a copy in the bargain bin in a few years or grab a copy through Redbox or Gamefly or something. I’m -Yoink!- sure not buying this game full price. EVER. Unless a patch is added to put the split screen play back into the game where it belongs. Since my son is only 9 1/2 He is not going to get his own live membership to play with others online. I don’t let him use my live to play online either. He’s just too young for that. So you’ve just stripped away the joy of playing with your buddies for those kids who are too young to have online access.

Halo 5 is one of the reasons I decided to buy an Xbox ONE also. I’m glad I’ve found other games I enjoy playing on it so I don’t feel my money was TOTALLY wasted on its’ purchase.

Shame on you Microsoft on making another poor decision to try to bolster income and force sales where there was no need. Integrate more multiplayer, yes. Completely take away the social aspect of talking trash to your buddy sitting right next to you, NO.

Um…all the Halo games were rated M for mature so you’re happy for him to play a mature rated game but not play online?

it wasn’t for sales, it was so the game is at 60fps. Sacrifices have to be made unfortunatley.

Mature rated games are pretty tame. Played them since I was little and i’m normal… ish

However internet interactions can be pretty harsh. Much worse than any video game can be.

Sorry that you and like 8 other people cant use splitscreen (sarcasm)

I feel your pain, but you must realize you are in a small minority that seemingly buys Halo for its splitscreen. You had made sacrifices so that the rest of us can have increased visual fidelity. I thank you for that.

Don’t send your kid into Halo matchmaking honestly, it’s a hell he shouldn’t expierience, it changes people…

Many will argue 60fps doesn’t mean a thing when put up against the fun one can have playing with 3 of his or her buddies on a couch.

Agreed, at least M rated games (offline) are a much more controlled exposure to mature images and topics. We all have to learn someday.

Funny how some kids are more mature than most of the adults online.
That teary-eyed over a letter on the game case, just take a sharpie and turn the T into an M. Sheesh.

And as for splitscreen, yes. A total bummer for all of those people with friends who don’t own their own xbox.

That’s the thing I don’t understand about there being no split screen. Why not just drop the frame rate in split screen? Nobody has to make any sacrifices.

You might disagree with them but they didn’t make a shameful decision. They had their reasons and they made their decisions accordingly. You may or may not trust them to one degree or another but they made it clear they cut split screen for reasons other than sales.

I applaud you for taking the time to sit down and play the games with your kids while simultaneously denying them access to online play for now. Honestly mature content isn’t going to harm them as long as it is in a safe controlled environment which you seem to be providing. You’re bonding and educating your child rather than using the system as a baby sitter which is unfortunately what a lot of parents do. I am very sorry that you won’t be able to play Halo 5 together with your son, definitely a poor choice on Microsoft’s part but there are many other amazing games that you can enjoy with him for years to come  Keep up the bonding and when he gets older I hope to see the both of you on the virtual battlefield or race tracks or whatever we are playing online.

Because of the engine. It’d be like saying “We dont want to shoot, we just want to play on half the screen with someone else”. The game runs at 60 FPS cause thats where all the calculations are done. Hit registration, grenade throwing, melee, its all connected to the FPS simulation. You may say thats bad practice, but it ensures that this shooter will run at a consisten 60 FPS, something that is the most important when it comes to a shooter

ratings are more like guidelines, TBH i feel that if any of the older halos were made today, they would be rated teen. that being said he’s only 9, is he ready for teen content? that’s up to the parents and apparently they think he is, so its ok.

as for playing online, check your settings, you can manage a reasonable amount of an accounts permissions, such as chat and visibility. with supervision your kid should be ok playing online, and if he’s only in customs with friends he probably won’t be put off by being wrecked in arena by older more experienced and coordinated players. that being said if your kid’s IRL friends he currently plays s/s with don’t have the console or game then he can’t play online with them.

it’s all opinion here but if his friends have the game you should be able to let him go online to play with them (if their parents let them online) just keep your eye on things and teach him good internet safety while he’s at it. but he’s your kid and it’s your choice.

as for no split screen, that’s debatable as to whether it was necessary to maintain the 60fps experience or if a simple disclaimer like “you are about to play the game with more than one player, some parts of the game may run at reduced FPS” would have sufficed but i understand your pain slightly. my release day ritual with friends has been since halo 2 to play all the preceding campaigns back to back co-op then hit the new one when we get home from town at like 1am (or at midnight since h4 and i started going digital) and this year i can’t do that because none of us will want to sit there and watch the other play so we are having it as an all online party, which while fun, won’t be as memorable.
