I’m just going to jump right in and say that it would seem a lot of people against the sexist ban use the same arguement, that if anyone happens to hear sexist jokes or insults, that they should just use mute, or block communication, while I agree these are useful antidotes for the situation, and I’m sure there are a lot of people that do use these utilities.
Now, I’m sure a lot of you have used that response, but since you believe the victims should make an effort, I believe you should too, it’s called restraining yourself, no ones forcing you to be a jerk, and if they are, mute/block communications. Simple, isn’t it?
I think that competitive banter is fine, and healthy, but when it starts to cross-over in to lame insults and scoring points at another, that’s when it starts becoming un-acceptable.
There’s also the case that female gamers could abuse the system, although it’s currently just speculation for some I believe that Microsoft should approach the situation with more caution, the cause is true, but it can be bended to ones will with ease if allowed, female or no (males pretending to be female).

I must be crazy, because apparently women can’t be sexist either.

You obviously didn’t read the enirety of my post, I said it could be abused by female gamers, which is why it must be above all approached with caution.

Nobody should have to restrain themselves on Xbox Live.

That’s the kind of naive comment that makes guys over XBox Live think it’s ok to be sexist pigs. Yes, women can be sexist, but seriously. I’ve played with dozens of women online, and not once have I heard them make a sexist comment. However, every single time I enter a party with randoms, at least one guy feels it’s necessary to act like a misogynist to any females present. Which group is being disproportionately victimized?

Why’s that? If you have silly urges to emotionally hurt someone over a microphone instead of face-to-face only proves that you’re a coward using Xbox Live as a tool to air your childish insults about.

Women can be sexist too, but it’s naive to think that that justifies outrageous sexism. That would be like saying the terrorists bomb buildings, so we should bomb their native countries and… wait, nevermind.
This isn’t a war on smack-talking, I don’t think 343 will come to your house and disembowel your grandmother in front of you if you call someone a b*tch or imply that your opponents fancy playing with dolls. This is more of a crackdown on aggressive harassment of female players. I have plenty of female friends who play video games, I’m not comfortable with them being verbally harassed by depraved strangers.
It’s almost futile to try and moderate morality over online networks, but I at least admire 343’s stance on player behaviour. It’s a little draconian, but at least it’s for the good of a large sum of gamers.
I kind of wish they’d put as much of an emphasis on racism and homophobia, though. Oh well, got to start somewhere.
heres my two cents. not that theyre gonna matter in the long run.
anyway. so. sexism ban has always been and people have been banned for sexist comments long before this. im glad it exsists because i do find the rampant sexism on live to be quite discouraging to newcoming female gamers(im male) but i want everyone to get into games if they want to and id hate for them to be discouraged because of some immature -Yoink!-.
that being said, it was never a big deal and had very few complaints and im sure there were very few fraudulent sexism reports.
However, with this “newly revised” sexism ban being as public as it is i feel that there will indeed be an increase of fraudulent sexism report and subsequently bans.
now you can be darn sure that im going to cover my -Yoink- if i happen to get banned, or a warning. i will fight it to the end. i dont use a mic in games unless im in a party i never speak in public lobbies.
Now, i think there should be a warning system, a three strike rule if you will. first legitimate report of sexism equals an email warning and message to your account. for many this would be enough.
Second offense, would be a temp ban maybe a week or two and a permanent in-game mute. drastic? i dont think so.
third and final offense would only come at this point if people started sending sexist PMs to people. and that would incite a permanent account ban.

As much as I’d like to emphasise my sympathies for victims of racists and homophobics, it would be going a little bit more off-topic than I’d like, that’s to say, I support an iron fist against the latter as much as sexism.

Ok, so let me start this out by saying, I DON’T CARE ABOUT YOU, YOUR OPINIONS, OR WELL YOUR PLUMBING. Any type of account action based on hearsay (since xboxlive chat is not recorded) this would require either LIVE monitoring in real time, or be report based, which is so easily abusable you would have to be a stupid ignorant child to implement it. Actually stating that “sexism” is ban worthy outside of teh normal harassment protocol is just a stupid (and in itself sexist, since it’s gonna be used against men in most cases anyways) ms wolfkill, you come across as a rather dimwitted feminist who simply seeks to propagate your own social views and force them upon gamers across the bloody planet, if you are treating sexism with further … enforcement and punishment then teh already existing harassment umbrella THAT MAKES YOU A DAFT SEXIST YOURSELF, you silly hypocrit.
as a dec, ban cheaters, and hackers, and boosters, EVERYONE ELSE, LEAVE YOUR DIRTY GRUBBY GRABBY HANDS OF OFF, we can police our own, and you have ZERO place policing the online community.
EDIT:wow, my keyboard must be going out.editing the small typos, can’t remember what i was writing for teh highlight part, whole sentences just disappeared.

It’s a little weird advocating a hard-line stance against free speech, but I still think individuals should be held accountable for what they say. I hate games where someone is being a raging -Yoink!- towards other players for something they had no choice in (race, gender, sexuality…).
I admire Riot, the guys behind League of Legends, for their approach. They have a communal system where players judge reported players (for a minuscule amount of in-game currency) based on their behaviour. It’s not 100% perfect, but it definitely makes sure that the biggest jerks are punished. I kind of wish XBL could do that, but there’s no easy way to do that with voice-chat.

Not really against the idea of free speech, I’m more against people abusing free speech to spout hurtful insults.

Free speech applies only in public forum. XBox Live is essentially Microsoft’s private network, so whatever rules they apply are theirs to enforce, (as it should be). Free Speech has nothing to do with it.
There’s no reason not to try and go after people for spouting hate-speech online. It ruins the quality of the game for a lot of people. I agree that it’d be difficult to properly and accurately monitor people’s behaviour, and there WILL be abuse of the system, but the gesture that 343 wants to do something about it is still a huge step forward.
Saying it’s sexist that this feature will mostly be used against men is a bit of a red herring. Of course it will! Gaming culture is sexist and predominantly male. Are you saying that guys will have to start bawling uncontrollably every time a lady cusses to make any moderation of sexism balanced? Women are treated HORRIBLY online. They deserve a fun environment as much as guys do.

I’d be so happy if enforcement of stuff like this can filter through to the rest of society. Or, at the very least, kill the whole stereotype people have towards Xbox Live.
