My service tag is 1337 but instead of showing [1337] it just shows . a lot of other players dont have one either… is this something you have to upgrade ingame to see?

I got the same issue. I have no idea what causes it but i feel with you.
my only guess is it has something to do with being the beta rewards program or something. its set but it just doesnt show. and people DONT talk at all ingame so you cant ask people whose are showing. lol
I have opened a ticket for this, but I have not yet heard back. I encourage you to do the same, and I appreciate you making this post as I thought it was just me haha.
Below is what I was able to determine / a temporary fix.
If I start my Halo Infinite game on my Series X (not quick resume) I will see my Service Tag displayed on my Nameplate in the main menu.
However once I go into a game, the Service Tag is missing from my Nameplate and also the Scoreboard.
If I go to Spartan ID and re-enter the Service Tag, it will display correctly the next time I load into a game. However this has to be done every time the game is started up (meaning when Halo in launched).
The Service Tag is not missing from the Spartan ID page on a fresh start-up, but only once it’s re-entered it will then display correctly in-game on the Scoreboard, until I quit the app and start it again later.

Classic. Haven’t seen as many N00Bs, YOLOs and SWAGs as I expected.
I just downloaded the new updated and this problem was highlighted even further as no one (myself included) in the lobby had Service Tags displaying.
I wonder if every Service Tag we see online has been input that day per my post above.
AH, i see. i went ahead and redid mine and it showed in game and I was like wow! but, as you are saying it has to be done everytime you start the game or whatever I will check. but i did get mine to show. but accidentally because i went ahead and reedited it. wonder if it doesnt stick like you say.

It’ll stick until you quit the game (not quick resume).
Once you start it up fresh again it’s missing until you enter it again.
Before Nier Automata came out, this was also my favorite tag.
I’ve encountered the same bug and received an update from the support team. Here is their answer that has been removed from my request. Don’t know why, maybe a bug or something has changed.

For those of us experiencing this issue, I’d be curious to know how early you downloaded the game after it went live.
I personally downloaded it ASAP as I was watching the Xbox stream (Series X).
I was able to have the game downloaded onto my girlfriend’s Series X later in the day. She is not experiencing this bug, but I am.
I re-installed the game just now but that did not fix the issue.
I really don’t understand how it affects some players and not others.

Hey is anyone else still experiencing this issue?
I just played a game from a fresh boot up of the game and my Service Tag displayed in-game correctly. I did go into customization and change my armor coating, but I did not re-enter my Service Tag like I had mentioned in my post above.
That said there were two people in my lobby who had the brackets [ ] instead of a Service Tag - but I surprisingly had mine when I have been affected by this too.
Edit: I spoke too soon. The next game I played (I went into a ranked game) and my Service Tag was missing. Everyone in the lobby but one player had their Service Tag missing.
Yeh, mine is usually not showing. even if i update it before I play for the day. and if I shut down its gone for good.
Did anyone experiencing the issue give themselves a Service Tag via the Waypoint test app in the first flight?
I did - so I am wondering if that somehow factors in.
