Seriously…this rank system needs to change

To be fair… 343 have done a poor job of explaining and communicating.

And they have made some bizarre choices. An open ended CSR at an imprecise scale (1 to 1800+) for a start.

They seem happy to encourage people grinding it even though that’s not how ranking systems work.

And while people like seeing their CSR change. Why on Earth do they show everyone else’s? That’s just fuel to the fire.

I get that it’s best to hide some bits. It just encourages toxic play. But at the moment we have people trying to smash kills at the expense of the objective. Or running around in bots thinking they can manipulate their rank.

And finally, people are stubborn. They didn’t get the rank they want and just refuse to believe the system isn’t broken.

You can explain to someone their personal performance isn’t taken into account by the CSR at the end of the game… And then their very next post will be about holding the Oddball and getting less points.

343 still have a lot of work to do.

I absolutely agree with this and everything you have to say. Someone has to stand up and fight the endless battles on educating 343 and the players.

I got to play two games today……one was a 2v4 and the other one my game crashed…way to go 343i….

Miserable system. Tonight my first match in we start with three players. No one quit out, the game simply started 3 v. 4. I wish I could say this was unusual. We lose as is to be expected and I still drop rank. Next match a team of four with two Onyx players on it who are teamed with gold players for some reason vs. a couple low Diamonds and Plat. They pull a steaktacular and I lose more than half my rank.

Some people check the game type and map before the game starts. And then quit out.

The stupider thing is that 343 allow the game to continue.

Just cancel it and start again. Nobody wants a 3v4.

Keep in mind your MMR may not have moved much. Particularly because your KPM and DPM are also adjusted for team sizes. CSR is not that important.

Sounds like they were CSR grinding. Bloody -yoinkers-.

Hopefully 343 make good on their promise to limit rand spreads.

It could also be that there were two Onyx buddies and the matchmaker got to the stage where it had to make the best game it could.

If the MMR was mismatched you shouldn’t lose too much MMR.

CSR you can lose a bit under a third of a tier (15 points). If your MMR is stable you can easily get it back.

But again. The problem lies in the scale of the system. If there was no CSR number you would have been happily oblivious to the machinations underneath. In the old days of 1-50 people were happy to play for days to weeks to move up (or down) one rank. The same MMR 1-1800+ was in the background. But now we get upset over every little point on the back of every single game.

I just lost team slayer and went 17:7:7 and lost twice as much CSR as my team mate who went 8:15:6.

We were both Dimond 4.

I don’t want to hear about the volatile curve of my hidden MMR statistics and games played B.S….it’s like I’m being punished for keeping my original account. I feel discriminated against and very frustrated.

This ranked system is literally the biggest piece of crap I’ve ever put up with.

Seriously WTF…this type of thing makes for a horrible and confusing player experience. How did this make it past Beta testing…

Your first mistake was using performance to try and work out how much CSR you lost. It’s not taken into account. So just don’t.

Your second mistake was worrying about how much CSR you lost. Double a little bit is still a little bit.

Meh.

Your CSR is higher than your MMR - so you lose more. Their MMR is closer to their CSR so they lost less.

If you want to keep it really simple. Their MMR is higher than yours.

Why. The rules may not be intuitive. But they apply to everyone.

You are not being discriminated against.

The ranking system is fine. Just take it for what it is. You are Diamond 4. That’s very likely a lock. If you improve enough you become Diamond 5.

But there isn’t enough precision to say are you 1350 or 1365. So don’t get hung up on losing a few points.

And especially don’t waste emotional energy on comparing points between team mates.

It does. Especially with 343 not communicating with the community.

I’ve said countless times we need a smaller scale.

I would just have divisions/tiers without the CSR score. Just go Bronze 1 to Onyx 6.

Or go old-school with 1-50.

Or 1-100, or even 1-117.

Whatever it is - it needs to be a smaller scale and have a maximum value.

The MMR needs to be left free to just do it’s thing in the background.

The progress bar of the rank is what drives people nuts imo. You see a nice blue bar or a bad red bar. A tiny blue sliver for a win sometimes, an enormous red derank bar.

Old style you just went up when you went up. Went down when you went down. Couldn’t compare it to someone elses number the same way you can compare right now where one players at the entry level of one rank bar and the other about to finish.

So that in itself causes frustration and anxiety. Players that are literally scared to team up with certain friends because they know the losses will affect them more and they’re right there about to rank up or just barely made it to the new progress bar.

It’s a blessing and a curse. We like to know how close we are to rank up, but at the same time curse the screen and yell wtf is wrong with the game when we don’t agree with the pay out or loss of that bar.

Well, I was Onyx in Season one….for the first half of Season two I played drunk and dropped down to platinum 6.

Now I’m playing sober and climbing back up to Onyx, but the rank system is still punishing me for playing drunk for the first half of the season….in this way I am being discriminated against.

I feel my rank and my rewards for a game should directly reflect how I played in THAT game….how old my account is or how many games I’ve played before is irrelevant.

So true, I’m always baffled by and sometimes pleasantly surprised by the red or blue bar. I think you’re completely spot on: remove it entirely then OCD players such as myself won’t obsess over why it goes up or down and just play. I know that in the aggregate what happens in one or two matches makes no difference but that anxiety and feeling of having my strings pulled at the end of every match kind of make the experience miserable. I’d also say hide it for your team mates and opponents as well but replace it with a full featured service record that allows players to show off their accolades and customization.

I feel the same way. That would be a nice way to do it.

There are soft locks on accounts (at lots of games played with expected results per match leading to the system to trust where you’re at), so that bit about being punished for using the same account has some truth to it…however, you’ll still break past that through your games and winning if you’re basically dominating all the time, and doing so in a significant manner.

Onyx is harder to reach in season 2 as well. For a lot of my friends they were stuck in daimond for awhile before getting out of it, and now they’re like 1600s. I recall them saying "man I hate this stupid game. I’m hard stuck in daimond yet facing nothing but onyx lobbies. "

Eventually they broke out of it.

Good luck bro. Make an alt account and call it DrunkDeckheart so whenever you’re chillin and wanna drink and play you go and hop on that one bro! Lol

Yep. It’s stupid to show it.

And even stupider to show everyone else’s for you to compare to.

Yes please. Change the scale of the CSR and put a maximum cap on it. So much better.

Don’t forget the S1 reset also dragged everyone down a division.

You are unlikely to hit the highs of S1.

The problem is you always have to take into account the opposition when defining “how you played”.

I would actually prefer they did give you a breakdown at the end of the game.

But remember it would go both ways. You would have to take the penalty for not doing as well as you thought.

eg. If you were expected to go 20 and 10 but ended up 19 and 10… or 20 and 11… your rank should go down.

Are people ready to lose rank in a win?

Rewarding people for one game in a ranking journey is fraught with danger. It’s largely 343’s decision to give CSR for every win that we end up with this oscillating around the MMR that people hate.

The only fix is to remover the CSR points altogether.

Yep! People were happy in the old days. 1-50. You went up or down over the course of days or weeks. The MMR just did what it needed to do in the background. You didn’t have to stress that your team mate lost 3 less points than you did.

Haha, I like the name Drunk Deckheart.

I just think the whole making an alt account to get around the rank system is silly. It irritates me that people do this and it’s rewarding in terms of rank.

If I were to make an alt account, from the sounds of what I’m reading here, I would have an easier time getting that one to Onyx since it won’t hold all my old drunk games against me.

I really appreciate the feedback from you guys on here.

But still shame on 343 for leaving it to the community to explain their frustrating system for them.

Players shouldn’t have to go out of their way to understand something thats being explained by other players.

The system needs to be simplified and understandable at face value.

There should be no incentive or rewards for making a new account or teaming up with someone on a new account.

Players should not be able to manipulate the system, by doing anything other than playing the actual game, to earn a higher rank.

Here’s to hoping….

Isn’t this a you problem?

You have an account which you play while under the influence.

Which is your choice.

How is the ranking system supposed to take that into account? Maybe they could have a settting for drinks per hour and the match maker can lower your opponents accordingly.

Just hoping you are at least imbibing stuff of good quality.

Probably.

You could have multiple accounts; sober deckheart, tippled deckheart, giggly deckheart, wobbly deckheart, drunk deckheart, and completely wrecked deckheart.

But keep in mind the skill population reset. It dragged people back a division. So it will be hard to get your S1 ranking back without showing some improvement. So it depends on how many games you were drunk for.

Anyway. The rank is being reset next week. So as long as you don’t drink during placement you should be fine.

Yep. Take the CSR score out of it. Leave the MMR to do it’s thing in the background. It doesn’t matter how complicated it is if you don’t see it.

As opposed to players manipulating the system to get a lower rank. Like smurfing. Or getting sozzled.

Haha, your funny Darwi and I appreciate your sound logic and reasoning.

It’s just frustrating to find out about how the drunk games are working against me after the fact.

When the ranks “reset” will I be forgiven for my drunk games as if I made a new account??

Yes.

Your current MMR will be used to seed your new one - but the MMR curve will be wide and volatile again.

Essentially the only difference between this and a new account will be the quality of your initial opponents. They will be pitched closer to your current MMR then to a baseline of G6/P1.

But because of this “head start” you will find your proper rank a bit faster than on a new account.

Go for it! Good luck. Keep us posted how it goes… “I am Deckheart_MD and I’ve been playing alcohol free for 12 games now”.

We’re getting close to a rank reset tho aren’t we? That will be the best time to set the tone for your progression to reaching the skill tier you’re aiming for. Those previous matches won’t have that impact on you. Try and get a good consistent squad you can have sessions with.

Good to see you’re in good spirit despite how frustrated you feel bro. I honestly don’t play the game too much. I get on and play a custom game aim trainer my friend made just so my shot doesn’t go to poop. I wait for friends to be on to play for the enjoyment. I mean…i get into sweaty lobbies…call outs…set ups…etc etc…but playing with friends REALLY eases the frustration. Playing alone is a nightmare. Like i want to sell my Xbox man lol
