Seriously, how is the gameplay better than what we had in the past 20 years?

There’s so many topics claiming Infinite’s gameplay is ‘the best in the series’, but this just seems like a false statement from my perspective. Obviously it’s a subjective matter, but there are multiple observable issues that haven’t been in the game in the past which make the gameplay feel worse. I’m just curious to see how people are somehow forgetting how good the previous games were in terms of gameplay. Very interested to see what’s actually better than the past games.

Objectively worse gameplay in Infinite:

  • Melee hits deal damage on hit 50% of the time. This is compared to the past 7 games where melee hits deal damage on hit 100% of the time.
  • Grenades despawn after throwing them 40% of the time. This is compared to the past 7 games where grenades don’t despawn 100% of the time.
  • Grenades don’t deal damage 40% of the time, when you see an enemy walk on top of your grenade while his shield regenerates. This is compared to the past 7 games where grenades deal damage 100% of the time in a radius, with stronger damage in the center of the blast.
  • Reloading works 75% of the time. I’ll sometime see the animation complete, see the new ammo count, swap weapons, swap back for a fight and woops my ammo is now empty. This is compared to the past 7 games where reloading with the full animation would reload your gun.
  • The netcode is worse than ever. The distance you have to be behind a wall to prevent bullet damage is at least 3 times as big as the distance as Halo 3, and that game’s netcode was questionnable at best.
  • The spawns are comparable to Halo CE. This is not a compliment, as they are known to be the worst spawns in the franchise. There doesn’t seem to be spawn trapping in Infinite, as it just seems one team will constantly spawn on top of the objective regardless of how many enemies there are nearby and regardless of the fact that other, better safe spawns are available. CTF is currently unplayable, because one team will always spawn on their flag while the other will always spawn on the opposite end of the map.
  • BTB vehicle spawn disparity. One team will eventually get the Scorpion spawn and just win, because the other team won’t. This is compared to past games where both teams would spawn with the same vehicles, to make it a fair match.
  • This is the Halo game with the most amount of crashes. Crashing = bad gameplay for you, and bad gameplay for the 7 other people in the game.
  • *** Map pool is the smallest in the series. Subject to change on launch, I guess we’ll have to see.

Debatably improved gameplay in Infinite:

  • The equipment is fun and interesting, apart from the useless drop shield.
  • Some of the weapons are interesting (Heatwave, Bulldog), but also some of the weapons are useless and serve no purpose (Ravager, Commando, Plasma Pistol). Then again it’s hard to appreciate them because of the poor netcode and consequently, the hitreg.
  • ???

Seriously what am I missing? Please explain how the gameplay is better.

WHAT.

The dummy reload was a terrible bug in Halo 3 also, however I’ve not experienced it once in Infinite yet (300+ games). I definitely ain’t getting bloodshots like I used to, I would get 1-2 guaranteed every single game with the sniper in H3. Never got any less frustrating.

The equipment is fun, grappleshot and repulsor have so many interesting applications for them. The weapons feel nice and have more balance than any Halo before.

Big Team is very fun layout and 12v12 no BR starts works super well.

The maps are pretty well designed overall and work for all the gametypes. Ranked arena is very fun. Somehow they’ve made a super competitive game that feels super casual in Big Team/Quickplay due to the AR starts. It’s nice to have some whacky chaotic gameplay to enjoy but also have this finely tuned competitive experience.

I agree about weapons despawning 5 seconds after dropping them and the asymmetrical vehicle spawns being an issue. I’ve had no issues with melees, reloads, grenades, spawns, or netcode. I certainly wouldn’t say it’s the best gameplay in the series, I don’t think anything is ever gonna beat the classic Halo experience of Halo CE and Halo 2. But what is here is very solid. Feels like they took what they made in Halo 5 and refined it some more, and added a touch of Halo 3 with bringing the equipment system back and making it better. I think after some months of work adding in more maps and bringing back classic gametypes that I might consider Infinite better than Halo 3. But the lack of content currently makes it hard for me to say that right now.

I’ve never heard people say Infinite was the best gameplay in the past 20 years but I HAVE heard people say it’s the best gameplay in the past 10 years.

You know, H4 and H5.

It ain’t the best in 20. But it’s the best 343 have made and some think it’s better than Reach. It’s definitely better than 4 and 5 and for me once Forge is out I’ll probably put it as high as 3 and Reach for me.

The gameplay is the best in the series… when it works.

When the netcode isn’t tripping, when the desync isn’t causing players to time travel, when hit registration… well, registers hits, the game plays very nicely.

Because it’s way more fun.

You’re probably expecting me to go into a long detailed essay to combat all your points but tbh I really can’t explain it. I’m just having way more fun than I have in the previous halo games. The guns just feel more fun to use and the kills feel satisfying. The AIs and Spartan voices make the game feel more lively. And the maps are straight up beautiful.

I mean it’s a subjective matter of course. But as someone who’s played probably at least a hundred matches of every single halo game I can personally say that Infinite is the most fun to play. Again, just my opinion. I can’t explain it, it just feels more fun

I can’t believe how bad it doesn’t work. It happened sometimes in H3, where P2P connections were limited by the speeds of the time, but now it’s just inexcusable.

I’m actually enjoying the normal game modes here. I’d hardly ever step outside of of SWAT, Infection or Grifball in previous games, barring Breakout pre-shields, Dominion in Halo 4, and Invasion on occasion in Reach.

BtB was always too chaotic for me in older games, but here it feels like the maps and modes actually lead into a cohesive game. Total Control is a lot of fun and does a good job of highlighting where to go and routinely changing up the flow of combat on the map.
