I think it’s safe to say the community has been very vocal about the challenge system. It’s been very poorly received.
Something that needs a complete removal are the RNG challenges. I don’t think they can be reworked into anything satisfying or acceptable. For instance, win 2 games of Oddball. These challenges are bad, they can take an unreasonable amount of games and is causing an increase in quitters. Anything that is gametype specific (or even overly specific should be scrapped). It’s not good to have challenges that can only be obtained in a smaller % of variants. They should be generic, while still being somewhat interesting. Almost every challenge is related to killing too. There are so many other possibilities if we consider encouraging the challenges to feel like a difference to regular play without negatively impacting gameplay.
Here are some examples of non-kill, more explorative challenges:
Use the grappling hook to travel 200 metres
Honk the horn of 3 different vehicles in one life
Mark enemy players x10
Pick up 6 different weapons in one game
Throw grenades 500 metres total
Travel 3,000 metres total
Shine your flashlight on two Spartans at once
Crouch repeatedly on an enemy corpse x3
Spend 2 minutes as the passenger of any vehicle total
Drop a weapon which is picked up by a teammate
Throw in some PVE:
Win a custom FFA game Vs 5 or more ODST or higher level bots
Get 30 kills in Training Mode
Get 3 star scores on any weapon drill x5
Then for the kill related ones have them be varied without the need for specific playlists:
Kill an enemy player with their own weapon
Kill enemies while crouched x4
Kill 10 enemy players with any type of Shotgun
Kill 7 enemy players with any type of Covenant weapon
Kill an enemy player while you have no shields
Kill an enemy player while you are airborne x5
In a single life get kills with 3 different weapons
It’s fine to have win games too, but drop the playlist specifity, win 4 PvP matches, or win 3 PvP matches in 3 different playlists. At least then players will have to play different playlists but they’d be able to pick which ones they want to play. It encourages players to explore more options and helps playlist health without putting pressure on players to play gametypes they strongly dislike.
Don’t make the challenges annoying to sell challenge swaps. It’s more important that people log on regularly to play and have fun while they do it. Daily challenges and Weekly challenges should offer some form of entertainment to encourage regular play and healthy continuous population. Increase number of daily challenges for a fraction of the exp of the weekly ones. Maybe introduce a tiny credit bonus even something like 5 or 10 credits for someone who completes all daily challenges. Doesn’t have to be overkill, purely designed to reward and increase player retention.
Post your own challenges if you have any ideas, feel like I could make them up all day. I’d love to see more inventive ones than get 7,500 points in Team Slayer and Win 4 games of Tactical Slayer so tell me any you can think of, but remember make them generic, interesting and most of all, achievable!
This would be fantastic. Things that can happen in any match, any mode, with any weapon. Being forced to roll the dice in Quick Play hoping for CTF or a grapple spawn really sucks. Being forced to do Team Slayer, ranked, or FFA when I just want to kick back with some BTB, really sucks.
My suggestion was just generic “Get XYZ Kills” or “Score XYZ Points” or “Play XYZ Matches” but your list is fantastic and fun, without being grindy and mode- or weapon-specific.
While I agree that the current challenge system is pretty bad, almost all of the challenges you’ve suggested are worse and the exact kind of thing they removed after players complained so much because they encourage players to not play the objective. If you have a challenge to travel 3,000 meters, people are just going to run around the edge of the map for 5 minutes or something. If you have a challenge to kill players while you have no shields players are just going to intentionally get hit a ton on purpose to try and lose shield so they can kill someone quick. And some of the challenges you’ve listed as just impossible, like kill a player with their own weapon. The current challenges may not be fancy, but at least they sort of encourage actually trying to win matches.
That’s actually a really good point. Maybe my Generic Challenges are actually a decent idea lol. Get Kills, Score Points, and Play Matches are equally mode- and -gear-agnostic, without dissuading you from playing the mode you’re in.
Obviously it’d be great if we had all sorts of challenges, including the fun stuff, that we could do any assortment of challenges without being required to finish 1-4 before we move onto 5-8, etc.
Players will always not play the objective. By only focusing on objective or kills, there is no creativity to the game. Does it really matter if every player isn’t 100% focused on the objective every single game? Particularly in social. I’m an Onyx 1600+ player. I care about winning, but I also think the game needs to move away from that mindset if the game is going to achieve greater newer player retention. The challenge system is dull right now and it’s repetitive, in a game that many complain is lacking in content. You can expand the current content by opening up new playstyle possibilities without making them incredibly hard i.e ‘Splatter an enemy Spartan using the repulsor’.
Cumulative so players will achieve it by playing naturally. Or course some will run around to do it as fast as possible and that’s the idea. To get people not necessarily focusing on just the game for the smallest amount of time. In doing so, you are reducing the repetitiveness of playing the game every day. Right now the game is a case of play X playlist, kill X. There is almost no variety to the challenges so the gameplay is always the exact same.
Fair point, but also something that occurs in most games naturally. There will always be challenges that make players misbehave to achieve slightly quicker. Look at the number of people who sacrificed themselves repeatedly to get Killjoy medals. Maybe this one should be removed.
Kill enemy, pick up weapons, use weapon to kill enemy when they respawn. It’s been a challenge in Call of Duty for 15+ years. This one is a little more difficult while retaining the focus on killing. Maybe a little too difficult for the average player. Never been an issue in CoD though.
People were complaining the challenge to get 10 kills with a gun stopped people playing the objective. Those challenges remained. People will still do that. It’s a ridiculous claim really as players have not been doing the objective in games for 20 years, challenge or no challenge. At least, if we add some variety and creativity to the mix the challenges may be more fun and create a new way of playing. Right now they are insanely boring. I think the objective complaint has genuinely made the challenge system worse.
Just throwing this out there, but alternatively they could just scrap all challenges and make the Weekly reward time based or activity completion based. For example, play 20hrs total during the week and you get the reward. Or play 50 matches (any matches, any Playlist) then you get the reward.
I mean let’s be honest, the only reason the challenge system exists in the first place is try and keep people engaged with the game. The problem is with the current system depending on your skill & RNG that amount of time investment can be utterly ridiculous from week to week.
Just reading that their is RNG tied to challenges is enough for me to not even bother. I get way more then enough of that BS just playing Destiny with Bungie’s “RNG”.
I thought about buying the BP but after reading how stupid it actually is? I’ll save myself the headache. I have enough stress in life as it is, I don’t need more BS because a company thinks dragging out content is called “creating a game”.
I get it that many complained about the commendations being… difficult… so “kill so many with type gun more quests” there then game types… Which some are complaining about too many game types, yet some complain about why so many killls per gun then game types played.
I personally hate kill 10 people with a skewer but get a double kill from a worthog conts as one… And so many kills on certain guns didn’t count.
Problems IMO is the force to random game list and not being free to choose your favourite game scenario even every match.
343 have missed the fact even during halo 5 that you had even streamers playing only, ranked or only custom or only firefighte or only warzone ect ect. Plus the fact that everyone has their opinion to weekly challenges they think is just right.
Being at a new age for apparently next generation surely a simple program to adjust challenges to a player’s match history making it still a challenge but yet on that players wave length… Not exactly rocket science.
I like these ideas, but I don’t think a lot of these would fit in with 343’s ‘vision’. The biggest issue with challenges for me, is they are primary now, when they use to be secondary… they were added to spice up the base gameplay in previous games. Now in Infinite, some Halo was added in to spice up the Challenges and that’s not how I think it’s suppose to work. Infinite relies far too much on Challenges to keep it’s gameplay fresh but all of this is due to it being a Free to Play game. You get what you pay for.
So much work to make an incredibly BALANCED game only to throw in a progression system that UNBALANCES the game. For what reason? Money? To sell challenge swaps? To be different from other games? A place holder for content? What?
Why would you put in a system that destroys the intended experience?
It’s a waste of development time and money, and a waste to all the players time and money. We all want the same thing, but someone or some persons lol clearly don’t want the same thing. I’m sure there are DEVs at 343 that are frustrated about this just as much as we are. Decisions like this can only come from someone who does not understand what this game is suppose to be.
