Series veteran trying to get back into Halo 5

Hey everyone! I haven’t been here in a while (not that I imagine I made myself known). I’ve been playing Halo since CE’s release year and used to dedicate like 90% of my life to Halo 3 during its release all the way towards Halo 4. Played Halo 4 a lot still returning occasionally to Halo 3. I used to be really damn good. I’ve played the Halo 3 MLG playlist, and ranked highly in Lone Wolves, although my favorite was Ranked Skirmish I believe (mix between Slayer, CTF, etc.). I was also the rank right under Brigadier and was always so close to leveling up but I stopped putting in a lot of time into that game around the time I ended up there.

Sorry for the long exposition, but that’s my background. With that in mind, I want some help getting good at Halo 5 again. I didn’t play a lot when it very first came out because I wasn’t happy with the lack of MP content. I came back to it after they added Forge, Assault, and some other things. I played ranked, got some high rankings (I think Platinums or Diamonds or something of the sort in Team Arena) with some guys that I met and we grouped up frequently, having a good time. I took a long break and coming back to it now with the game pass since a friend is trying it now. It’s really hard for us both because he’s brand new and fighting people that are very experienced, making it harder for me to get into some even matches. We only play social, but it’s hard for him. I want to frequently play this game again like I have with other Halo titles, but I’m getting very frustrated at not being as good as I used to be. With my life not being very kind to me and very hectic for me, it’s becoming even more frustrating to try to learn these new maps or to not get too upset when I’m missing shots just because I’m choking and fumbling my fingers. I got into Gold III I believe on Team Arena this week, but I feel like I can do better, and have been playing mostly pretty poorly.

Help that I’m looking for is learning the new maps and specifics on the maps like best choke points, how to best hold an objective, multiple pathways, etc. I also want help on if anything has changed with weapons besides placements like the meta of anything. Halo is usually pretty static on these things, but I was wondering if any weapons got buffed or nerfed. I know a lot of people complain about the magnums in this game, so maybe they got nerfed? Also any tips on improving aim, accuracy, and better overall game sense. I used to know when to chase when not to, etc. but now my senses are a bit off, though not completely invalid.

And also, controller settings. I have an Elite controller with the additional buttons, and was wondering what they are best used for. Having four of them at once is too much for me, and I already get frequently overwhelmed. Was thinking even if I just use one for thruster packs while I’m fighting? Not sure. Is there anything people recommend specifically? I use Recon controls, btw, I can’t not play with them, I’ve tried to using something more efficient, but I truly can’t.

Also on the settings for the controller, are there specific deadzones and such that are known to be the most efficient for this game’s multiplayer? Should I use the Xbox app for such a thing, or should I use the game itself? And on a similar note, what about sensitivity, acceleration, and the like in the game’s settings?

Sorry for asking so much, but I want to get better at this game, and I really miss it. It doesn’t keep my attention or give me as much pleasure as Halo 3 did back in its lifespan, but I still consider this to easily be the only shooter I truly love and have stuck with on my Xbox–I love Overwatch but I feel like it’s way too different of a shooter to compare.

Thank you, fellow Spartan and Sangheili warriors for any and all help that you may offer me. <3

About all you can do is practice. As far as controller settings what works for one person may not work for another. So just make your adjustments till you find one that works. I go into heroic warzone firefight to test settings. I also find heroic warzone firefight a good place to just warm up in general. H5 plays very very competitive in just about any playlist so it just takes play time to get decent at it. I have the elite controller and use the H4 settings and remapped the crouch, grenade select, and jump to paddles under the controller. My sensitivities are at 4.

As far as what sensitivity one should use I would always start low and work your way up. I’m at 4 sen. and 2 acc. I’m not a fan of acceleration personally but you might be so you might want to experiment with that. I think most players tend to keep there dead zones at 0. That’s what mine are currently at. There is also a patch that will becoming out to help with the heavy aim issue that tends to effect some players. So stay tuned for that! Ive played all the Halos except the MCC. And H5 is by far the hardest when it comes to the aiming. If you have a friend that is just starting with this game and is unfamiliar with Halo in general he maybe in for a treat. It seems the game is very competitive in all playlists. If your friend is having a hard time aiming make sure they start out with a low sensitivity also and work there way up. Like anything though practice will do wonders! Good luck! Btw I use the Recon button layout as well. Not the ideal layout for this particular game but I just cant seem to switch to anything else.

There’s so much on here to address, so if you want some help, just add me. I’ll be on again later on. I can help you out then and answer your questions.

This game plays differently from other halo’s so don’t beat yourself up over not being as good as you were in previous games

To get good with precision weapons, play Octagon with people in the customs browser. If you need some tips, look up Luke the Notable on YouTube (but don’t watch his last vid because he’s doing a misinformed rant about microtransactions. I recommend playing ranked because after you play 10 placement matches, you will get a rank and play guys around your skill, whereas social the skill margin is much higher.
