So I have a question for the general Halo public (or any monitors on here) If I’m not mistaken, HW2 takes place after H3 where Johnson dies, correct? Is his existence in HW2 is just for multiplayer and not canon?
I feel like a moron needing to ask this, but the technology is so vast, impressive, and advanced in the Halo universe that when I see Johnsons face every time I go to the waypoint page to log in, I start having this rush of questions. And I selected the “read more” tab for it, hoping it would serve some sort of explanation, even if only a very simple one.
If there’s no answer I won’t lose any sleep over it, I guess I’m just hopeful, but not expecting, that he’ll have more appearances in the original Halo series.
Halo Wars 2’s multiplayer has been established to be non-canon, so, yes, Johnson’s appearance as a leader in HW2 is not canon.

He’s in the game purely for fan service.
There’s another dead character named sergeant Forge that’s playable, so the multiplayer is completely non-canon. That makes me a bit sad, because Colony would be awesome as a character in the EU if it was canon.

Well, as far as we know, there’s nothing stopping the other leaders from being canon. I’m pretty sure that only the appearances of certain characters in non-canon (because both Sergeants are dead).

Thank you bunches!
I wondered this as well and I’m not sure what to think when I first loaded the game I immediately bought sgt. Johnson and then played the campaign and in the introduction cutscene where all of the crio pods are opened and all the crew members are reawakened it cuts out on the last pod and the side of the pod reads Sgt. Johnson. I feel like this is just an Easter egg sort of thing? Please let me know if I’m hallucinating or something

I don’t personally recall seeing Johnson’s tube. One of the Halo Waypoint Monitors replied to this post too and stated that he is only included for the entertainment and for the fans. Unfortunately he is still deceased. I would love if he could come back, though. I mean they’ve got to have some kind of technology to believably bring back a dead guy in the Halo universe. I mean, it was Johnson. Whom I’m pretty sure is the human tougher than Chief.

it was Forges pod. for Johnson to have a pod, he wouldn’t have been in Halo 1-3.

I agree. Johnson has undergone many of the same/similar combat scenarios as Chief and has also been said to be “immune” to the flood infection as few humans are biologically. This alone could make him a huge importance the tre human-flood-war if he had been equipped with the latest spartan armor, he most likely could’ve been deemed hyper lethal; same as only the Chief himself, and Noble 6.

Ah thank you! I had wondered about that but never drew all of the dates of the events within the different games together

The subsequent story of how he arrived at his new duty station is still classified, but trust us, it’s a good one.
One of my friends told me it was canon, this is the only ‘proof’ I could find that it might be non-canon. Also, he said the Flood DLC was canon, so that is another possibility that he might be alive.

The flood DLC, as far as I understand, is intended to be Canon and help shape the story for the following Halo games.

Isn’t Johnson a Gen1 Spartan?
