Say what you will about IGN, but I think they echo many people’s sentiments regarding Locke in this video (lazy link because I don’t know how to hyperlink on mobile):
Basically, NOBODY WANTED A GAME ABOUT LOCKE!!! We wanted a game about the Chief. I kind of hope they just off Locke in the opening cut scene of Halo 6. Lol.
Taste my saltiness!!! Taste it!!!
And it just occurred to me. I think they knew people would be salty about Locke being the main character. I recall a little bit of damage control having to be done when the actor who played Locke made a comment about him being the main character, star, or something of that nature. Can’t recall exactly.
Anyways that’s the end of my rant. Peace.
I was fine with a game about Locke. I’m upset 343 felt the need to lie and initiate damage control (thus making me feel stupid for defending them), but I had no problem with Locke and Osiris as characters.
I play halo for chief not locke

I’m only assuming this because it’s the thread’s topic, but are you referring to Frankie saying Chief was still the main character and hero after the VA for Locke said you’d play as him more?
Because I was also pretty salty about that being a lie.

Yeah. Course we know that wouldn’t be the last thing lied about from the devs.
I don’t get the hate about locke. I think he is a cool character. No he is not MC. But there is more to halo than just MC. The halo universe is huge and full of stories to be told of different spartans , if people will just be a little open minded.
I play Halo for my own Spartan to reach his goals. Looking at it from a different view. I think of my Spartan relying on me to guide him to his next mission. One reason I miss Spartan Ops. Gave my spartan a story of his own. Locke, Chief, it really doesn’t matter as long as they get the story right…and we’re all still waiting!
I agree with Dr Halsey. Locke is fine as a character and all, but we were given the impression that Chief would still be the main character in the game. But what happens? We only get 3 missions with Chief. 3. Out of 15. It’s ridiculous and completely unacceptable that 343i would lie to us again, after they have done so with Halo 4 and the Master Chief Collection. I’m not sure if they’re intentionally being terrible or they’re extremely ignorant, but it seems to me that both making Master Chief and Blue Team barely present in the game as well as lying out of their behinds were the worst decisions they could have made with the game…
Honestly, the only thing that made me tolerate the overabundance of Team Osiris in the game was the presence of Buck. After all, he’s easily the best character in that squad. I dread to imagine what would have happened if they would have stuck to their original plan and had Thorn instead of him…
I don’t mind that Locke is the main character of a Halo game. I mind that he’s the main character of HALO 5! A core Halo game! This is the Chief’s story, not the new guy’s.

More like 3/12 missions, but your point obviously remains the same.

Why not both? You did see how Frankie responded to critics who didn’t like Cortana becoming evil in Halo 5 in his TIME interview right? Calling them young fans who don’t get subtly and nuance.
I don’t hate Locke, I hate how uninteresting he is, and I hate that 343i lied to us about who would be the main character of Halo 5. If Locke had been a bit more interesting and if Master Chief was the obvious main character, with an equal amount of missions for both characters, I wouldn’t care less about a new character.

What was the alleged lie about halo 4? I personally think h4 is a great game. Different, but great.
For the record, I really liked the campaign of this game, especially on second playthrough.
But it felt apparent to me that 343 wanted Halo 5 to be about Locke and that they tacked on the Chief levels because, at some point, someone said, "you can’t have a Halo game without the Chief being playable.
It just felt like the Cortana reveal and the fact that Chief wasn’t really going rogue and murdering innocent civilians (which the game weirdly leaves out) came too soon because we were behind Chief’s visor. Imagine if those questions about Cortana and Chief’s intentions had lingered until toward the end of the game?
It feels sort of like they didn’t even give Locke a chance to be appealing because of course the Chief would overshadow him in a Halo game.

Then what did you do from 2009-2012 when three Halo games came out that didn’t feature Chief?

I didn’t play much spartan ops, but I did enjoy the times I played it.
Locke just has no character, I don’t know his beleifs or moviations, and considering I had both Nightfall and 5 this is a massive problem, he’s just “I’m gonna my job” but not in the cool I’m here to do it the right way but “I got sighed up for chore duty” with Chief he had an interesting backstory and little moments of characteristics like a tilt of his helmet or nod of his head that told alot, Locke doesn’t have that, he’s basically like every 343 character, a marketing pitch

I think he means playing the core Halo games (numbered entries) he expects to play as Chief. And I feel the same way. I don’t mind the spin off games at all either.
And I should clarify from my original post. Locke in of himself didn’t bother me that much. It was his taking the Chief’s place in a core series that has always centered around the Chief and his exploits/experiences. And then the marketing misled is to believe other wise.

That’s right, I remember reading that interview. I can’t argue with you there, it’s insulting to see somebody who’s supposed to represent a company, and one of my favourite video game series, straight up insult me and many other fans of the series because we thought they did a bad job with the game. His reaction should have been “We’ve heard your criticism and will keep it in mind for our next game” rather than “if you don’t like it then you’re stupid”.
Frankie has lost all respect from me after that.
I loved playing halo as Master Chief. I always will. However, I do not mind the idea of shifting focus to a new main character in the series. What I do mind, though, is if the shift is not done properly. In the case of Halo 5, I thought that the campaign story was lacking. We were given virtually no background on any of the members of team Osiris (except Buck of course); we have no real connection to any of these new characters nor any reason to care if they live or die.
