Yes but if we had to pick a company that uses it the most we’d have to say ubisoft, their games almost always have it. And while epic made it they sure as heck hardly use the dang thing. Just look at fortnite those definitely aren’t unreal graphics lol
what are you even talking about?
How does anything you just said effect what I said?
Any Microsoft game (or any game for that matter) can use Unreal Engine, there is a franchise under their belt called Gears of War that has been using it forever and will continue to use it. Now even if you believe that UE would result in a better Halo, the fact of the matter is that 343i decided otherwise.
A quick google search will tell you that Fortnite does use Unreal Engine.
1 game in how many? yeah it was a series yeah I played it. Still only 1 series they make that’s notable but oh wait i can name 8 games they didnt make that ubisoft did that uses the unreal engine. As for fortnite sure doesnt seem like it since the gameplay has been changing constantly since day 1. But I referred to the graphics specifically because yeah nah those aren’t even unreal engine 4 graphics. It’s more like the sims over the shoulder view in a battle royal setup.
The point was while the ability to use it is there doesnt mean they do. Doesnt mean its theirs. You can own a company and still have to pay royalties for use of their items that had a previous copyright before you owned them.
As for better well visually speaking here the unreal engines have made dozens of games look wayyy better than their original a prime example of that is zelda ocarina of time. They made it gorgeous and I would have loved to play that version.
But halo probably wouldnt benefit from it either. after all 343 hasn’t shown much promise anyway so why waste the good stuff like that on their art designs. Halo 4 and 5 are prime bland examples of why we shouldn’t do that heck saying 4 was bad visually may be too much of an insult as there were some nice sections but overall crappy bland blue are 3 words to describe that art style.
Also I said they dont own the rights. Not that they dont own the company. But again that doesnt automatically give you the rights to use. It’s not like ue4 which I believe anyone can use now.
Looked it up, apparently its something like a 5% royalty fee, which for a company that just paid 70 billion to acquire Activision is basically peanuts. For context, Microsoft also have to pay Sony for each Bluray game they sell and they seemingly don’t care too much about that either.
Now I don’t know anything about the relationship between 343i/MS, but I would imagine that if a 343i lead dev thought it would result in a superior product (they would just pitch it in a way that makes it seem like they would make more money ultimately) they would’ve went for it.
This is all just speculation and hearsay, none of this really matters ultimately, this is just us talking about something that didn’t happen lol. We’re discussing why or what could have been.
The blue ray is a bit weird as multiple companies have association with that particular patent. Since the information isnt super easily available I wont be looking it up tonight (its 4 am leave me alone I’m tired). But from what I saw sony isnt the only company that benefits from blu ray purchases Panasonic is another weather microsoft is in on it too I have no idea but from what I did reap its 9 for every bluray player sold and like 7 cents for every disc
It’s not a mental health problem. It’s a hubris problem. They ‘own’ one of the most recognisable game franchises in history and they can do no wrong. That attitude will be pervading the company. You can see it in their comms, you can see it directly when employees participate in these forums. The only way to fix this is to sack the people responsible (particularly for MCC and HI), refresh the leadership and change the culture. Someone needs to start swinging an axe among the senior leadership.
Depends on what exactlly we’re talking about. Just the disc format or the one’s that hold video. There’s a difference there because there are additional patents involved with the latter.
In general there is not one patent holder for the whole thing but several companies that contributed to defining the standard. In the end they got together to provide a patent pool that can be licensed en-bloc and which distributes the payments to the patent holders.
It’s also not really uncommon that it works this way. It was the same with DVD and several video formats. But you’re right with the basic statement: there’s several companies involved and benefitting from the use of the format.
Halo and Star Wars lined up a bit in the last three entries.
- Different directors took over the story and didn’t like it so they broke it. Hence why Halo 4, 5, and Infinite jump-around a lot and why Star Wars Episodes 7-9 were all garbage.
This was so accurate…. And it reflects on the crap they delivered.

We should all go play Halo 5 to make a statements about what is better.
This or go back to MCC
And you can tell it’s the same engine as the old halos. First because it has the same “style” for lack of a better word. If you’re familiar with rendering you know you can tell which renderer was used just by looking at it. And even if you’re not you can still tell, for instance, It has the same vertice precision issue in the rendering just as halo 5. They just renamed it to make it sound like it’s new.
There’s 45 minutes of cut dialogue on YouTube for Halo 4 some of which strongly suggests they already had the idea of her turning evil. Why wouldn’t a story involving her going rampant and a meeting with the Gravemind not have that outcome? The only change was that the Didact didn’t come back and have a hand in her turning evil. Which is even more strongly implied in the cut dialogue.
The Reclaimer Saga was about the Chief promising to save Cortana. Having that escalate in Halo 5 is not a deviation from that.
It was interesting. I thought making Cortana that powerful was kind of cool as a story beat. How does this Rogue Servitor society work? How do the other species of the galaxy react? How far does Cortana go to achieve what she wants? Is there a more sinister reason like the Logic Plague? Can the Chief save Cortana or is he going to have to kill her? It was a chance to go into the issues between humans and their AI; which should be addressed.
Which has been swapped out for the Banished. A faction who for two games they refuse to provide a clear motivation and goal. Oh it’s like Halo Wars, we’re stuck on the Forerunner site and nobody knows why we’re here or where we are or what’s going on in the galaxy; just shooting Brutes coz reasons. Putting down Esharum isn’t an epic showdown and the Harbinger was a floating squid talking in riddles. Nothing happened.
Unrelated and I don’t want to get involved, but for posterity’s sake, the hit game Fortnite recently migrated to Unreal Engine 5 after having been created using Unreal Engine 4, and at no point used another engine.
“Zero accountability as far as I can tell: The same people have been in upper management for ages despite games being poorly received and the studio itself being a mess. Take responsibility for the disaster you’ve created and step down. Honestly, I don’t know if this can even be salvaged at this point short of just tearing everything down and letting a new team rebuild things.”
This is the most obvious one to me. You can start to see the lack of accountability with Halo 4 but you will always want to give someone the benefit of a doubt and I understand that but the lack of accountability after the MCC launch is where they had successful created a culture where “upper management” is held to little or no standards.
I think you missed how they weren’t making the game for 6 years. They made a new engine specifically for Halo, and that took a few years. Then 343 had 3 years allowed to make Infinite. Aside from that, not many AAA games are released in their entirety or glitch-free day 1. Expecting a game to be everything you want day 1 will only lead to disappointment.
I waited nearly 10 years (Halo 5 really didn’t do it for me). I can wait a few more months. But that’s just me; I have a few too many games to to catch up on anyway. My brother and I will get around to playing the Campaign when co-op releases.
Your preferences on what video games you liked don’t deter the fact that Halo Infinite won even though it was only out for a few weeks prior to the various game award announcements. I think the fact it won with such limited play time, glitches and all, is pretty neat. I was never really interested in Battlefield, Vanguard, Cyberpunk, or Mass Effect (although I have a few friends who are crazy for Legendary Edition). Personally, Returnal was my game of the year, but last year in general had some great games. It’s all a matter of preference, though.
If I may, the weapons are NOT that impressive! Where do we begin?
-The S7 is arguably the worst in halo history. It’s difficult to use and really only effective using no scope.
-The commando has been nerfed to oblivion, all but useless and worst of all not the DMR. Kills are spotty and unreliable when coupled with server issues
-the sidekick with its amount of bloom is difficult to use and probably should be a 6 perfect (minimum) at a minimum with about half the bloom (if any) this also is historically terrible for halo by comparison.
-pulse carbine is nothing like H5, the projectiles are far too slow. -only useable when switching weapons.
-plasma pistol, historically a terrible weapon, somehow infinite made it worse. You can’t freeze vehicles anymore with it, which was a useful feature to an otherwise useless weapon.
-M41 SPNKR, might as well toss a grenade bc you aren’t killing anything unless it goes off under their feet (sometimes not even that)
-AR the perfect well rounded META weapon in HI, get your friends roll in a group toss nades and spam everyone in quickplay. I admire the desire to MAKE THE AR GREAT AGAIN…again -but- it can slay deep mid range and outperforms nearly every other weapon in the game except maybe rockets and the soon to be nerfed mangler (God I hope not)
-the bulldog, the shotgun that nobody wanted -also historically less superior to its predecessor.
The mangler is the only new weapon everyone likes. I’m amazed they didn’t screw up the BR.
Ya cant really screw that one up easily though. Like bloom would affect the 4 tap but the br is known for its 4 tap to take that away would kill the entire point of the gun. You think people left because of matchmaking make their favorite gun terrible they’ll leave just as quick. I think 343 probably realized this
Absolutely! I think this is why the tossed the DMR, can’t have another weapon throw shade at every fanboys favorite pew-pew.
The single best think HI could do is give more options to challenge the BR.
The weapons are a snoozefest, compared to H5 the sandbox cannot stack up. I realize it’s early but weapons need a serious overhaul
