Secondary Campaign Objectives (They're Fun!)

Remember in Halo: Reach the achievements for secondary campaign objectives, like kill the Elite Zealot before he escapes on the fifth mission. Well that was a great addition to the Halo campaign, it made it that the levels had replay ability and they added to the depth of the campaign. Simply, they were just fun!

So why not add to Halo 5 more secondary campaign objectives regarding enemies or simply just more stuff to do(like saving x from being killed by y, etc.)?

Ah yes the golden elite ranger, what was his name? never mind.

Anyway, I love secondary objectives, easter eggs and any other general distractions from the main game. I think that in halo 5, terminals should be optional flashback missions, a chance to play as an ancient faction such as the forerunners, ancient humans or the flood.

now that would be an actually awesome version of Spartan Ops LOL

Yes, yes, and yes!

I’ve proposed this in the past. Optional objectives would add to the replay value and give the campaign gameplay more depth. For example, an optional objective could be to clear a nearby landing zone so that a Pelican can drop off reinforcements, vehicles, weapons, etc. Or an objective could be to destroy a power supply to make infiltrating an enemy base easier. Of course, you could simply ignore these missions and continue to advance.

Anything that gives Halo a more sandbox feel can only be good in my book.

Alot is possible with a few more additons to the campaign…

Objective X (Save Targets); Outcome Y (Rescued) or Outcome Z (Death or Captured).

Lasky (Objective X): John friendly tags lightly up… they are requesting assistance; you could save them, but pursuing the Didact is your primary objective.

Lasky (Outcome Y): Great work John, you have given those marines some well deserved R&R, and acquired some useful intel for ONI. (Make future battle easier) (Gain a waypoint prize/achievement)

Lasky (Outcome Z): John… the friendly targets have disappeared… I’m sorry but orders are orders. (Makes possible future situations harder)

Objective X (Eliminate Target); Outcome Y (Eliminated) or Outcome Z (Escaped)

Osman (Objective X): Agent Locke, a high-priority target has popped up within your area, eliminate him and the Covenant Remnant would be weakened dramatically.

Osman (Outcome Y): Great work Agent Locke… that will shut those hinge-heads -Yoinks!- up for a while, also the science team is extracting that artifact you acquired. (Gain a possible stealthy advantage when infiltrating) (Gain a waypoint prize/achievement)

Osman (Outcome Z): Hmm… it seemed he escaped. Perhaps your loosing your touching Agent Jameson? (Lost the stealthy advantage and alerted the base)

^Exactly. Something like this could go a long way for the campaign’s playability.

I always go on about how that would make for an excellent non-chief game a la ODST or Reach… but this… this is a stupendous idea. Either way, the universe needs games based on the ancient days (or elsewhere/when.)

That’s actually brilliant… someone tell 343i for us lol

Something to drag the missions out a bit more is a good idea, they go to quick if you just run and gun.

I love the idea of having these objectives, since it, as you said, makes the campaign more replayable, but it might end up putting a bit too much of the player in the player’s character. In the old days that wasn’t a problem, MC was a completely bland character, but now with all the plot and the geas and the grief and the tears and the -Yoink!- AI girlfriends, he’s his own man. Six’s objectives were directly in his path as well, so if you missed them you either messed up or did it on purpose.

Looking at games like Grand Theft Auto, you can see how callous and sadistic the average gamer is. Most of them won’t even give a glance to a squadron of Marines in trouble, even with incentive. After discussing Dishonored with my friends earlier today, I discovered I was the only one who decided to go along without killing anyone, even while the game shouts at you that the ending will be -Yoink- if you don’t. Locke too will have his own character, so he can’t be a blank slate. If he waltzes past a dying marine pausing only to -Yoink!- his dead comrade, then that kind of breaks it.

On the side, if the objectives have too large an impact on the game’s future, then it could lead to canon issues. Game with choices like this, such as Dishonored and Fable, don’t have an extended universe that’s so delicate, as the player is the character. Halo can’t really get away with that, unless it’s with Fireteam Crimson.

But if these issues could be avoided, I would love them.

DUDE! That be so -Yoinking!- dope, I mean I dunno about the “play as forerunners” but the flashback of master chief would be really cool. Like the story unveils itself as you play the game but you can find terminals that allows you to play as chief before halo ce, like during reach or something, or maybe after halo 4 but before halo 5, or locke… GOSH, why does the community always have better ideas than the developers <.<
