Season 1, free content removed

It seems like if you didn’t pay for the first battle pass you can no longer progress in it for the (very little) free content that was there.
Were we ever warned about this?
I was planning on eventually getting the MkII helmet one day, but that is no longer possible unless I buy it for way more than it’s worth, and simultaneously support a very un-moral monetisation method.
This game already had very little base-game content. And now we learn that the tiny amount of content you can get by just playing is just more FOMO stuff.

343: “We don’t want to weaponise FOMO”

“Were we ever warned about this?”

No. Not until like a week before Season 2 came out during the live stream. They were purposely vague with how it works this entire time.

I imagine the change was brought about due to community feedback. Like we can give credits, but how do we claw back some money.

Personally I think it was a poor choice, the free track offers very little anyway. I imagine it’s to encourage more people to play while the season is live. The only reason I can see them doing it like this is to set a precedent so they can comfortably put credits in free tracks for future seasons. If they don’t set the precedent now there will be uproar in the future if they then started doing after credits become part of the free pass.

You can’t have the free pass infinite time bound with credits in the free tiers. Would be a loss of income over time with no real benefit to the company.

I understand “why” they did this. But it’s very dishonest of them.
They were the ones who said they won’t weaponise fomo. And they are the ones who said they would have a “players first mindset”. Among other things they’ve lied about, or conveniently avoided mentioning.
I don’t find it unreasonable to expect them to live up to their word.
I wouldn’t exactly call it a loss in income to keep it as it was. It would rather be refraining from an extra cash grab alongside everything else. They don’t “need” to do this", they want to.
In my opinion having 0 items unlockable simply by playing the game without paying or being on a time limit does not fall under the category of a player first mindset.
It would have been less than the very least to just have been honest about this from the start.

Players will at all time have free stuff to unlock via the current seasons battle pass.

But I agree there was probably a better way of doing it.

I completed the first battle pass so not an issue for me but didn’t 343 promise battle passes would not expire? Seems like that came with the caveat of “so long as you give us money”.

Honest question, how much FOMO can a free player have if they were already missing out on all of the paid stuff?

(I don’t know that I’ve had FOMO in relation to things - experiences sure but not things.)

I don’t recall exactly but I think they said something along the lines of: ”Don’t worry that you’ll waste your money because passes you own don’t expire”.
So I don’t think they specified what the deal would be for those who don’t buy it, which was very misleading.

Yeah they said, once you buy it, it will never expire.

Don’t recall them ever discussing the free content but who knows.

Missing out on the paid content is a choice. Missing the remaining content in season 1 wasn’t a choice.
In fact, missing 98% of the content just makes you worry even more about missing the remaining 2%.
I’m just not willing to support this direction with my money, doesn’t mean I don’t want the content.

I’ve been considering buying the new pass if it means I can collect credits for all future passes. But even though this seems to be implied right now, I just don’t know if I can trust 343/Microsoft to stick by this.

Oh, I shouldn’t have taken it for granted, but I honestly just assumed I was in no hurry.

Understandable, it did come out of nowhere unfortunately.

You’re kidding me right? Holy hell that’s a scumbag move.

Yeah, they “said” they wouldn’t weaponize fomo, but then every week is an item that is only attainable by completing a ridiculously long list of tasks, 90% of which players don’t want to play that way, in the hopes of getting 1 item that will never be available in any other way again.

Sounds like the definition of FOMO.

BUT they’ve been called out on so many lies right now, it is hard to take anything they say seriously anymore.

So tired of hearing, “we hear you and we just need more time.” I would have rather heard, “we’re delaying the game another year because the game isn’t ready and we don’t want to release hot garbage for the community.”

Yea i was kinda keeping blackout curtains up until the season updated to see how they handled this “multiple battle pass” scam. They are so over their heads with this one. I cant even imagine what this half baked Idea looked like on a dry-erase board prior to the beta release.

Have a complete thought already 434Q

Yup I saw this coming in season 1, and even tho I have the premium pass, and completed all 100 ties as well as 90% of events/challenges there is still content that I will not be able to unlock as it is “vaulted” and removed from being “free to unlock”

So yeah scumbag move as some of those items (specifically reach armor pieces) were actually added with season 2…….so now I have to wait for them to show up in the shop if I’m lucky and I’ll have to fork out cash for the pieces I want (stares at hazop armor set)

Way to be scumbags and weaponize FOMO

The thing is we weren’t warned and we were told they wouldn’t be locked. We also were told everything would be earnable and not feel like a 2nd job…sadly 343i did the complete opposite of what they claimed before launch. I find it strange that they got all the goodwill from fixing MCC and going beyond then self sabotaging Infinite to the point where it felt like it undo all the goodwill they did with MCC. I’m deeply concerned for the future of Halo. It’s like I keep hearing there listening then they do the complete opposite.

If you didnt hit level 100 in 6 months yall must have barely touched the game in that time. So why are yall so worried about rewards if youre not even interested in playing?

No new players joined afterwards, and every single player has been in this since day 1, right?

Perhaps the issue is with the company lying?
It sets a precedent for the future, they say one thing and then do another thing, contradicting what they said.
Maybe, just maybe, some people want to enjoy the game, but haven’t been that commited during those 6 months, or been put off for various reasons.
I mean, personally want to enjoy this game but there are several off putting factors which, despite my frequent ventures into the game over 6 months, still took me about 5 months to complete the Battlepass, and that was with active Challenge completion. It may also be that people who don’t actively chase Challenges could be in the danger of not being close to completing it.

I would say it was never implied the free track would ever remain past a season’s expiration. The wording strongly suggests that the only way to participate in previous expired seasons would be through the purchase of said season.

All Battle Passes will be permanent. This means that the Season 1 Battle Pass will be around forever; you can always go back, select that as your active Battle Pass and continue to earn progress in it. If you decided to take a Season off, or you simply didn’t have time to play, that’s fine. You can always go back and purchased any prior Battle Pass as well.

For $10 you can, alongside a plethora of other unlocks and cosmetics. And the good news, it’ll never go away if you ever want to pull the trigger on that decision.

What exactly is “FOMO” in this case? The ability to acquire some free stuff in a certain timeframe? I’d consider that more of an “early adopter” bonus considering the ability to acquire those same cosmetics at any time after the season passes for the price of a pass that doesn’t ever expire.

In the context of your thread, you might want to redirect that quote every other company/game that runs limited time seasons that have to be completed in an allotted timeframe or lose the ability to ever complete them again whether you paid or not.

Bungie? Activision? Fortnite? Apex perhaps?

@ronnie42 @Techn0Blad32373 @mr_taco47 not sure why this would be misinterpreted as bait, so I added this little bit on to make it contextual to your react :joy:
