Sculpting Clay Master Cheif With No Helmet

so earlier today i was messing around with some clay and we were making heads. So I scrapped what I was doing (if you get the chance, get a smooth tile of clay and write ODST, looks epic) and made this head, right now it is still drying and the base of it is crumbling a bit. Key features would be eyes are sort of Japanese style where it is one line with 2 vertical lines coming off it, I added a wrinkle effect to show age too. And I carved a nameplate saying ‘John’ on the neck. I thought I would share this as it took a good hour and its not that good. But I’m pessimistic. Anyway if you want to see pictures ones its dried by the weekend hopefully I can do, just keep this thread active (not bump, but post constructive comments) because I mean, let it die but I will be posting anyway. So yeah, leave a +1 like or comment or whatever if you are interested in images. Thanks.

TLDR image links in a later post, scroll down a bit, not too far, only a few posts.

Post some progress images.

note in the first one you get to see his eyes. i did it sort of american-indian style, hope you guys liked it, also the wrinkle effect was good? no? i sort of messed up the nameplate as i didn’t clear excess clay out, but on the whole it was good for an hours work.

also sorry for it being smaller images, i took pictures on my phone.

Not bad, I’d like to see the finished product.

thanks, I don’t think I can improve it much more, not much clay left now. Either way I need to thumb some.clay onto the back of the neck as that particularly looked messy, although this is a small project it might take a while sorry as you know, its not that easy for me to acquire materials. So yeah, I have a few weeks to get it done, just don’t expect it too soon.

OK so on my schedule is to sort of fix it up in terms of cracks first and then maybe paint it afterwards. Can I have your ideas for colours but I was thinky a pinky-white for base colour then black for eye detail (wrinkles can be skin colour, the way I designed them they will naturally be darker) and maybe I will try and get some gold paint for nameplate? Sorry for messing up the nameplate with clay though
.also if you could share what I am doing that would be appreciated as I would really like to get a following as I hope to get it finished in the next month or two… Sorry for long time but as I previously mentioned, I have little clay left so I will have to buy more to finish up the cracks, then I will have to get more paint in, so yeah… So if you have ideas for paint colours please comment with detail. (base colour, then eye detail, then nameplate basically)

and if this is a success I might do more

also I’m on vacation next week so I will have to leave the project, I might still be checking in here though and keeping it updated and replying to you guys… You know if there are more coming…

Thats pretty cool, you should try doing a helmet too sometime.

yeah, I might do, thing is though I would have to do it upside down and create it like a bowl. And nailing details upside down is hard. Also the paint on that wouldn’t necessarily be hard but detail would be and it probably wouldn’t fit on head…

UPDATE

so I realised I have no more clay so I don’t know if I will go down to the store to get some or not, but I was thinking of heating up the cracked areas and sort of merging the clay, the base I think is unfixable but that is fine, I want to get these things out the way before I paint. Also if you want pictures of base/neck then just ask. The back of the neck as a pretty big crack in it and the base is more oval than originally circular. I can probably thumb on some clay for neck but I don’t think I can do much on my base.

paint, well I was thinking of a white for base colour (you know, not the base it sits on but the colour I paint the whole thing before anything else) the eye detail/eyebrows black and nameplate gold. Sound good?
