Scrub needs help . . .

So in wandering around this forum it seems to be a really cool place with what appears to be a really close knit community.

I’m a die hard Halo FPSer, but have a soft spot for RTS’s.

Anyways, in the attempt to complete all Halo achievements, I returned to an old stomping ground of Halo Wars. I was always terrible at the game, but have had a real desire to be good, or at the very least good enough that my matches dont end in 10 minutes . . .

I always seem to get rushed. Hard. I don’t understand how guys are coming up with tanks, ODSTs, or unlimited Hero power 7 minutes into the game . . . I don’t even know how to defend it.

I’m looking for tips or even if anybody wants to play with me and kind of give tips as we go along. Teammates are always quitting out 2 seconds into the game, and I know I would enjoy it if I really just had a better understanding of what I need to be doing . . .

Anyways, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks guys/gals.

Winning a game in 10 minutes is the definition of decent. Showing up at a persons base and decimating it in under 5 minutes is good.

Just have to be on the win side of the 10 minutes for it to matter

I always play with friends and make sure we have at least 1 arby/prophet or brute to help defend, also build gunner warthogs and turrets if you are positive they will rush… i never really use turrets though. Also im kinda a noob so i might not be the best person to ask but… its works for me so i gotta be doing something right.

Better than me sir.

Turreted warthogs seem to tear up the computer but useless vs humans . . . I’ve tried to warthog people to death, but it just seems so useless . . .

Turrets are a pretty good idea, but a lot of early supplies to spend . . .

I actually finally won a game that I felt I was responsible for the W. (I enjoy 3v3 matches).

There are lots of youtube channels you can view to get the basics down. If you want to learn faster though, I suggest you add players that are better than you (preferably players that aren’t cocky lol) and scrim with them and ask for advice.

Here are some youtube channels:

http://www.youtube.com/bb2010halowars

You can also add me - King Leonighdus - and you can also add Wild Arms FX or sadstone. They visit these forums and they love scrimming and giving advice. I suggest starting off in 1v1 because it helps you in all areas of skill and will make you a better player overall.

What if I hate 1v1 though? :stuck_out_tongue:

> What if I hate 1v1 though? :stuck_out_tongue:

You can stick to teams if you like. That’s where I started off as well.

Tell us what leader you play and we could help you with strats, build orders, etc.

Been watching your really helpful videos. Thank you so much.

Never really played enough to be like, yeah, this is my guy.
I enjoy Cutter, but am also very fond of the Chieftain. I think after watching some videos I’ll try to stick with the Chieftain. He always seemed more fluid and I feel I could do more with him.

How focused should I be early on in building a single type of unit? Everyone rushes hard so it almost seems to be a toss up, rock, paper, scissors of having the right type of unit?

And what’s a “hook?” Haha

Edit: Are they the “extra” buildings on the maps?

2 More Questions:
Should I avoid queuing lots of “multiples?” like several tanks or several buildings at once? Everyone only seems to que one thing at a time.

And I continue to not understand how to “control” the teleported on Ft. Deen. It is a guaranteed loss for me on that map . . .

Edit #2

I also don’t necessarily want to lick on a particular target unless it’s an immediate threat? Just strafe around?

> And what’s a “hook?” Haha
> Free reactors, supply elevators extra building slots and the factories where you buy protectors or sentinels. Pretty much anything on a map that gives you an advantage.

Actually, the rock-paper-scissors approach to Halo Wars’ gameplay is not really accurate. For example, as the Chieftain, you always want to start by building Brutes and rush right over regardless of their combo (of course, there are other things you can do, but this is a good rule of thumb to start with). Once they have anything anti-infantry, you stop building Brutes and go for Banshees, you do not build Jackals.

So, to answer your question, you should be very focused on building one type of unit the entire game, from start to finish. In Teams, all you need to do is to streamline one type of unit (this does not work at all in 1s). If you ever change unit types, you should switch from one streamlined unit to another.

Also, with the Chief in Party Teams, there is no defense, you are the offense. Have your team members put up a defense while you push up and cause damage. The Chief is the most offense leader to play because of his Brutes and you always need to make sure your rush strips a good number of supply pads at the very least. If they rush you, recalling is a terrible idea unless your teammates refuse to help. Try for a couple of turrets if you’re being rushed and save up for Citadel if they aim for your main. But, you need to focus on keeping your offense strong. Your presence at their base will dissolve quickly if your leader isn’t there.

So I’m always making one type of unit and causing trouble on the front lines?

And you say I’m focusing on supply pads? Does that really slow down production all that much?

It is pretty much always brutes into banshees, or brutes into vampires.
Team games consist of tanks/banshees/vampires/gauss hogs. Other units are simply not viable at mid to high-level play except wolverines/gremlins, but those are completely situational.

You want to brute rush while occasionally blessing your warehouses. It doesn’t really slow you down that much.

So what I took away from this video is the most important thing is upgrading tech. Work up to the unit you want and upgrade upgrade upgrade.

> So what I took away from this video is the most important thing is upgrading tech. Work up to the unit you want and upgrade upgrade upgrade.

Nooo lmao he was being sarcastic. The build in that video was horrible. xD

Well yes with anders getting tech up is inportant because PT and chain amp far out way canni/focusing lens. But just dont do it how he did it in that video. Build 3Upgrade 1 reactor then recycle 2, not build 4 and recycle 1.

3 reactors/recycle 2? So it’s not a good idea to upgrade reactors?
