Scorpion Driver's Education

Anyone have suggestions on how to drive this stupid tank.

It seems that the steering controls will sometimes randomly switch up on me (surprise, front is now back, or left is now right!), resulting in my Scorpion going the wrong direction and getting quickly annihilated on Warzone, or even worse getting stuck in a passage with teammate vehicles behind me, irritating my teammates and even making them sitting targets in some cases.

Thing drives terribly since you cant aim the cannon and drive at the same time and it has a strong tendency of driving backwards.

Some cover is destructable so shoot it to try to clear space to drive and remember that it goes where the cannon is aimed when driving.
It is better served as artillery support rather than for direct attacks. Tanks in this game are more geared for support roles than anything.

Yea - that’s kinda the tactic I’ve been taking lately… just park it way back and nuke from orbit. It just sucks when a horde of Prometheans show up and you’re trying to evade quickly but get all screwed up with driving while trying to blast your way out. Probably one of the most frustrating vehicles when that happens.

Yeah, it’s annoying. When that happens, just make small movements to figure out which direction will move the way you want it to go. Once you get going, then you can readjust the tank and start moving fully again.

Often driving backwards is beneficial, as you can poke your turret out of a tunnel entrance without exposing the bulk of your tank. If there are vehicles in the air this is especially useful. It does, however, expose the weakspot in the back of the scorpion.

Wheelman armor mod is your best friend when operating a scorpion. If you can get a friend with wheelman equipped, get his -Yoink- in the turret.

If you’re having that many issues load up campaign on easy and just drive around till you get the hang of it.

I’m probably exaggerating how bad it is. Normally I have it under control, it’s just when -Yoink- hits the fan and I start getting frantic that I get discombobulated with the steering, so it’s twice as painful because it almost always ends up as a death in round 4 or 5 of WZ and results in losing the tank and that wonderful delayed spawn. Insult to injury type of situation.

Make a simple obstacle course in Forge and navigate it.

Maybe even make targets to shoot with the power cores in the Explosive Props menu. Time yourself and get faster.

You have to roll the stick completely along the outside (against the pad wall) to get it to spin consistently. Otherwise, the transition from forward to back isn’t as intuitive as Reach or H4.

Every time I try to avoid direct fire I somehow spin the Scorpion’s weak point right in the incoming fire.
Driving the tank in previous games then switching to Halo 5 is an ankward experience.

There is a certain turret angle where things get wacky. Left is right and right is left and the whole world seems upside down. You have to turn your turret straight forward to get the controls to behave again. So annoying.

Yeah it tends to randomly start to drive backwards

You need to use both sticks.
Your aim stick controls the barrel.
You other is your tracks movement.

The turn is relative to your barrel. Sorta…

I’m in a scorpion: im perfectly straight forward…
I turn my barrel right and my other stick to follow.

Turn all the way arround, now my back is my front.

My tracks move properly until my barrels more than half way my tracks change their directional input.

Straighten out to move correctly. <<<<

I can drive the tank forward while shooting behind me. The trick is to move the movement stick so it counters the movement of the right. So if your turning to fire backwards, mirror the movement of the other stick so the tank keeps rolling forward as you turn. It takes time but you can do it. I would need my controller in my hand to be more detailed though :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey guys, OP here.
Am I doing this right!?

Well… it’s certainly a faster way to travel in a Scorpion.

Thanks. My newbie powers prevent me from linking. Funny thing is it happened on a Mongoose two games later.

No problem. Haven’t had it happen to me with lighter vehicles, but, well:
Watch me do barrel rolls in an ONI Scorpion.

Nice! Complete with the Warden kill at the end. 10 points for style. 10 points for execution.

My mongoose flip was a bit more intentional and not a result of a physics bug:

Huh. That doesn’t look normal.
