Let me first say that I’m not on the level of Lucid or Mint Blitz. I have really good games here and there. However, the skill based matchmaking feels so heavily favored against me regularly in social playlists. I’ll lose five games in a row, go positive each time with maybe a 2.0 KD game or two mixed in but don’t even come close to winning. The rest of my teammates are going 6 and 16, don’t play objective while the other is mopping the floor with us. I’m not saying SBMM needs to go away but can we tone it down a little. It gets frustrating my ultimate goal is to win. I don’t care if I’m having crazy KD games. But when winning just isn’t possible because of who I’m matched up with, it gets pretty disappointing.
All I care about is winning games as well. But the SBMM wants you to lose 50% of your games. So you always get big anchors on your teams if you’re playing well.
The winner in this Halo has little to do with skill. Whoever has the bigger anchor will be the 1 who loses the match 9/10.
The only playlist that is even close to the right level of sbmm is quick play. Everything else needs scaled down, big time. Particularly team slayer, it is like an esports event every single game.
The people who suffer are those who are good, but not at the extremes. We are the ones who suffer here
Ideally SBMM avoids this scenario by having a narrower range of skill mix in the game.
The way a high Diamond / Onyx player approaches CTF is always going to be at odds to the way a Silver / Gold player goes about it.
The problem is that the current population circumvents this. The match maker has to draw from a wider range of ranks to make matches in a timely matter.
The irony is that people are blaming the results on SBMM. But without SBMM you get an even wider range of ranks. Very good players will still have average team-mates around he G6/P1 level. And those players are still not going to be on the same page as you in regards to playing the objective.
The only difference is that your opponents are also going to be G6/P1. So it doesn’t matter. The awesome player will carry the day with their kill streaks. A lot less sweaty, for sure, but only fun for one out of eight players in the game.
Only if you are good enough ![]()
Ouch.
It’s pretty easy to defend.
Opponents to SBMM are a vocal minority. And they do seem to fit a stereotype of toxic play, not wanting to try new things, not caring about the population health as a whole, or wanting to support revenue streams.
So you can see why game developers don’t really give too hoots about them.
All I’d want it to do is give me evenly match able opponents ( as well as teammates ) so it can be a solid match. No one too high or too low so it doesn’t turn into a boring -Yoink!- one sided match.
I agree with you @General_Fox
Unfortunately, then SBMM should be a bit stricter so it looks more to the skills of the individual players.
Problem could be that during off hours, or in low populated areas you couldn’t find matches anymore.
I rather see that they go to a system like H3 had (if i remember correctly) where the system first looks only at people your skill, then after 10 seconds or so widens the search a little bit, after another 10 seconds widens it another bit, etc.
Also there should be a form of party matching, since a full stack against 4 solo players is inherently unbalanced.
If you search in a party in infinite - the game expect the party to do better than they normally would if they were all solo players - so they DO match make with better solo players. Regularly played with a wide range of skilled players and we would regularly have to play either 2 diamond 6 or higher with 2 gold 4-plat 2 or 4 people with plat 5 - diamond 3 roughly. Even though both situations but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th best players all on the other team, sometimes I’m not the best either so it’s more like 1,3,47 vs 2,5,6,8.
And I thought it did expand skill range for playlists that aren’t ranked already. Streamers I watch can search ranked for 10 minutes to finally find a match with the exact same people they played 10 minutes ago, but they missed the queue because there’s like 10 around their skill level so they can’t fill 2 games. Then they play rumble pit or social slayer and don’t find anything for 1-2 minutes and then match make with diamonds even though they are like onyx 2000+
This I don’t agree with. They can try to prioritize that parties face other parties if possible. But if not, it should pair them with anyone.
Couldnt agree more. I cant stand team slayer. Super sweaty all the darn time
I say they open up the ranks of people who we can queue with… I want to play ranked with my buddys!
Note: They are in diamond! However, I am just onyx…
Why is this a thing? Makes no sense!
That is what i mean ![]()

I’m pretty sure it still does something like that.

And ditto.
It looks to match parties.
And then there is the MMR weighting for parties - so that they are at least the match making takes them into account.
