I’m one of them, top rank in every Halo game (minus Halo 2 ha as borderline impossible), thousands of hours of online multiplayer.
Yet in Infinite I only have a 56% win ratio. I’m fine with that. Every game I play I’m still more likely to win than lose, I don’t have to try too hard most the time in social but it’s not insanely easy to just grab the wins and I’m usually putting down a few fairly skilled players in the process.
Very satisfying to snatch a win from someone who really, really wants it.
You might be fine with being manipulated by the game but most of us aren’t. Sick of being forced to hard carry 30+ kills and still lose because my teammates are afk/never played a fps before, just because the rigged matchmaking decided I had to lose that match.
Now tell us how your casual friends feel about the matches they play when they are in the same fireteam as you
I’ll give my experience so you won’t be the only one
one of my friends has a absolutely horrible time when he plays with me and another one of my friends as we tended to play ranked a lot during season 1 while he only played btb casually so in our casual matches he goes negative and having to get constantly stomped have one of us help him constantly in gun fights gimping the team and leaving him with a horrible experience
Like all the people defending sbmm praise it for the ability to prevent newbies and casuals from getting stomped constantly when in fact it doesn’t it actually exasperates it heck its the main reason why i can only play with certain people from my friends list as unless we’re all around the same level someone is going to get stomped and has to try way more than the others
And this is the main reason why ranked and casual sbmm shouldn’t be tied
Losing a 50/50 match and being put in an unwinnable landslide match are two very different things.
Going 30-5 and losing by 2 kills, was a winnable match that unfortunately one has lost. Going 30-5 and losing by 15 kills would be a completely different matter.
Thankfully I don’t get much of either of those scenarios on Infinite.
I’m not being manipulated into it, the system is getting me some crackingly close games consistently. Most of them are 50/50 and could go either way. It’s not engineering some grand scheme because I won a few that I now have to lose a few.
Sorry but being put in a match against 4 competent players while my 3 team mates are worthless is effectively “unwinnable”. The system should be matching players of similar skill, not matching players for matches that are close in score.
My worst friend Danny has a great time when we play. He’s awful at Halo. When we played the Halo drinking game back in the day, you had to do a shot if Danny got more kills than you. Only one shot was ever drank due to that rule.
Usually when we play together he goes -15 or worse. He has a great time but mostly because I shift the focus of the game as well as him generally not caring. We usually play BTB and the whole time we will try to get a Warthog. Every time one of us gets a Warthog we try to get kills. It never ends well but we laugh as we explode. Every time we spawn we are looking for each other and the Warthog, or a vehicle or just to meet up on the chaos.
When I play with him, wins don’t matter.
Playing with a few other friends they hate it. They want to do well and they can’t with me. The skill gap is huge. To put it in perspective, I 1v1’d the best player out of all of them who was a 45 in Halo 3 and beat him 15-0, some of the players never hit 20. They have a miserable time. I don’t think any game is all that fun with a giant skill gap. I started using an alt with mouse and keyboard to give them an easier time as I’m inexperienced at that. Still doesn’t work that well as I’m still higher ranked than all of them on mnk. They don’t like the game enough to play alone, and they don’t really want to play with me as the games aren’t fun for them. That’s almost confirmation of sbmm being a good thing. At least they could enjoy the game alone if they wanted to, but without it most games alone would be like games with me…
I’ve always found Halo more fun with similarly skilled players, but I guess that’s ranked for me. I’d never take even a Diamond friend into ranked, I want 8 Onyx players in there. I want a tight game with everyone firing at 100%, no passengers.
That means you want an stricter SBMM that doesn’t only look at team averages, but also at the individual skill differences.
Rememeber: with less to no SBMM you could face worse teammates, while having better opponents then you now have.
Without SBMM he would still have that, however if your friend plays solo, he would still have that while now he should not.
And if you want the SBMM to create matches where your friend has an easy/casual time, it will only be worse. Because now only your friend (that knowingly teamed up with a better player!) gets a difficult time, while otherwise all 4 players on the enemy team (that did not make that choice) would have a difficult time. (wich would again also affect the playabilty of the matches of your friend when he plays solo).
Ahhh Yes, Remove a feature that has been apart of the Halo franchise since 2004 with Halo 2,
Sorry kiddo, You just gotta get good,
i will always hold firm to my belief that people who mindlessly moan about SBMM are pretty garbage players in their own right, since in the end, Good players dont complain or brag, they adapt and over come.
The rank that shows does NOT matter. The only thing that matters is the hidden system that goes by kd. It’s rigged for two reasons: to keep your win rate near 50% and to make sure you carry bad players. It revolves around keeping you in a constant loop of making sure the Fortnite players that actually care about challenges have an easy time in ranked. Because if they get beat in every match they wouldn’t care about the store. They would just drop the game. So yes, ranked is basically designed around microtransactions. The best way to get a fair experience is to keep your overall kd positive or play how you normally play, but every other match or every third match, make sure you go negative. If you keep stomping on the other team the matchmaking will eventually put you against 4 players of equal skill or better while you still have a trash team and you’ll get steamrolled. Ranked is mostly objective anyway which is luck based so don’t worry about “losing” those matches. Just play how you want.
No but I don’t think many people understand. Whne you play with a fireteam you are forcing the otherwise strict SBMM open.
This actually makes the searches faster and the games more varied… Sometimes you still get stomped sometimes you stomp. It’s fun.
When you play solo you are stuck with a very rigid SBMM range. Games are boring… Your team often sucks as you were used to balance the SBMM of another 3 player fire team.
If SBMM was permanently wider for everyone then solo play wouldn’t be so frustrating.
How do I know? I live in aus. If I play with a fireteam I get local matches with low ping and varied and fun skill fluctuationa… It’s fantastic.
I play solo… I play at 150ms ping against players with similar skill but at a 120ms disadvantage. I continuously play sweaty game after sweaty game. It’s exhausting and not fun.
Im playing social to escape the life of ranked. Otherwise what’s the point of social playlists?
No one is asking for random, people want variety. Constant sweat is not fun.
And I think you will find that there are a lot of pros that complain about social playlists in halo being too sweaty. (I’m not a pro but I have heard this stated a lot by streamers)

But hey mint blitz is Australian so that could be why we have similar feelings about SBMM
I love when my benevolent game developer overlords dictate to me what is fun in their game. I mean, I sometimes get confused and think I know what I find fun, and so I need to be frequently reminded that in fact I do not know what is fun, and I need some data driven algorithm to tell me what is actually fun.
And then, sometimes I think I know what is fun and try to explain that on the internet somewhere, and I need to be reminded by strangers on the internet that in fact I am lying about what is fun because I secretly want a 90% win rate and 12.0 K/D.
Its not like we had fun with the past halos with its variety of matches and its only now people have issues with the way the past halos handled casual matchmaking nooooo we just want to stomp people
