Sarge dies in the first game?

I don’t know how many others have noticed this, but the one big deal with the Halo Universe to me is that Sarge clearly dies in the first game. It is even stated Master Chief is the sole survivor during Halo’s destruction. If this is somehow explained in the books, or something, I’d be interested in hearing it.

I hope this topic is in the right place!

Halo CE’s legendary ending has long since been confirmed as non-canon.
The novel Halo First Strike details how Sgt. Johnson survived.

A few people made it off Alpha Halo, but not even an handful of the survivors survived First Strike.
Only Chief and Johnson made it off Alpha Halo and through the events of First Strike.
Chips Duboo and Stacker also somehow escaped.

No confirmation on how that happened just yet but since neither has shown up since Halo 3…

Stacker was active during the battle of Requiem. His status after that is unknown, though.

Oh thats right, they even had his name up on the screen.

Wow thank you everybody for shedding some light on this matter for me I was really concerned that it was a big plot hole what to know it’s fixed makes me really want to read the book

There is also Halo Graphic Novel called Halo Comic containing 4 short stories one of them being how Johnson fought the Flood. That event takes place before the book.

Perhaps… or in that instant Johnson and that Elite made a break for it, the Elite got caught by the Flood, and Johnson just dodged the bullet by a centimeter in escaping the explosion on a Pelican. (Just imagined Canon-Fitting)

wasn’t the first game also meant to be a stand-alone game? like, they weren’t sure if there was going to be a sequel but let the ending open enough to give themselves the chance if it sold well.
