…I think you’re gonna be in a minority when it comes to this. Making it so 034 were alive feels like it would cheapen his sacrifice. Really renders the whole “spending lives vs wasting them” part of TFoR moot.

John saved him on their first mission, and then on a later mission Sam saved Master Chief, getting his armor breached in the process, on a Covenant ship, where the only means of egress was a space-walk. So Sam stayed behind, guarding the bomb until it detonated, becoming the first Spartan Casualty.
