As many of you guys are aware, Jul 'Mdama died at the end of the first mission of Halo 5 Guardians. This made me think on who took over the Covenant after 'Mdama died? For those who read the Escalation comics and recently the last issue, Sali 'Nyon led a rebellion against 'Mdama and took over one of his carriers, the Breath of Annihilation. He currently leds the mutiny on Jul. My theory is that after his death, 'Nyon took leadership of the Covenant and planned the Battle of Nuusra on Sanghelios. And possibly Sali fell during the Battle of Sunaion. What do you guys think on the theory that Sali 'Nyon took over the Covenant after Jul 'Mdama’s death?
Interesting theory.

I doubt it.
Even this 'Nyon loyalist believes him to be dead or missing by the time of Halo 5. It would seem odd if they were talking about him in past tense with him a few miles away at Sunaion.
That being said though, Kitun 'Arach does betray Jul at Kamchata, and allow Osiris to kill him. So it is possible that Kitun was in league with Sali at that point and was moving to assassinate Jul for him.
Cool, we replace a character who actually had some depth, Jul, with another religious nutter. Fantastic.
Well, in the Canon Fodder Fifty Caliber, Grim said that one of the commanders who led the Covenant in the Battle of Sunaion was Kitun 'Arach.
Very indeed interesting, i think it is completely possible. And maybe this could be a possible explanation for the Prometheans fighting the Covenant during the plot of Halo 5. I dont know though however, but i do want to find that out.

If the Covenant are, for whatever reason, in Halo 6, can they just not be led by Sali 'Nyon? Please?
Instead of Jul who we has been getting character development for 4 years we now get Sali who is about as dull and cardboard cut out zealot as you can get (I mean for -Yoink-'s sake even his armor is just the standard Zealot armor, indistinguishable from his subordinates) to undoubtedly be the covenant leader in future media alongside Luro and perhaps Avu. I mean you have such great material such as Jul and Avu interacting now that Avu has his sons…and…I mean such a waste. I would have preferred Sali die.
I have an idea. What if, sometime before the events of Halo 5, Jul somehow managed to capture Sali and performed a brevet mutation of him (the guy us the Didact’s hand and it’s not totally implausible to believe that the Forerunners could perform mutations of other species), turning him into a “second” Jul, but this new Jul still has some traits that had previously resided in Sali, I.e. Arrogance.
It fits in with Jul’s cunning nature, Sali’s disappearance and it’ll has a nice irony to it. Sali did want to take control of the Covenant, but now he’s become the person he tried to rebell against. This also saves Jul from the lazy writing of his now supposed death.

It’s probably too complicated of an idea for 343 to handle at this point. Like the concept though!

And this is why I don’t want Sali to be the replacement of Jul.
Not to mention it’ll make Jul’s bull-Yoink of a death even more bull-Yoink if Sali does replace him. Like, it’ll make his 10-second-not-fighting-back death scene completely pointless. Just like Spartan Ops…

Conceptually feasible… for a Forerunner character. The Didact used Jul and his forces to keep the UNSC busy. He didn’t teach him anything about brevet mutations, nor would the Covenant just happen to have that sort of technological prowess and the necessary tech to do it. Personally I’m not a huge fan of using the brevet mutation idea beyond the one instance we’ve seen it used in canon, where it actually had some worthwhile impact on the overall story and universe.
Before we all emblaze Sali 'Nyon as a dull, typical religious fanatic and immediately cast away all faith in his potential as a character, let us take a moment to consider the possibility that he may be developed and expanded upon before or even during Halo 6.

Either way he is just an excuse to keep the Covenant around as enemies to fight.

It’s just something I’m proposing, and the idea can be further delved in. And Jul was known as the Didact’s Hand so maybe the Didact had “gifted” Jul with some Forerunner tech. Then again, most of their interaction happened off screen so, yeah.
And then there’s Halsey, a human capable of hacking into a Contender class A.I (which has several glaring issues to it), so it’s not implausible to think Jul could order Halsey to perform a brevet mutation.
Every time I read SALI 'NYON I hear Celine Dion.
Maybe all of our questions are going to be answered in Halo: Escalation

His heart will go on.
Did they ever discover which branch of the Covenant were glassing planets Post War?

Which they perfectly well could have just kept 'Mdama around for.
