They are smart.
They get the 60$ and on top of that they can justify all the microtransactions because the multiplayer is free.
The multiplayer should be included in the 60$ campaign.
They know that all the Halo die hard fans want to play the campaign so they make double profit.
Past:
Halo 3
60$ for Campaign, Multiplayer, Forge
~30$ for Map packs
90$
Now:
Halo Infinite
60$ for Campaign
~100$ (lets say the first 10 seasons)
~ 25$ (lets say each player buys 25$ worth of item shop)
185$ but it can be more because maybe players will spend more than 25$ for cosmetic and 100$ for seasons.
That’s vitriolicly aggressively underselling it my guy.
I’m a bit worried about how SP will play, how long it’ll last, and if it’ll be anything more than a bare bones copy of Far Cry, but come on. There’s a lot that goes into SP: story elements, works/map design, level design, scripting, voice acting, music, gameplay elements.
There are also people like me who don’t care at all about making your spartan look better and they won’t buy the season pass and any cosmetics at all. I pay only 60€
Also 2011: MP is locked behind a subscription paywall. The game is available only on Xbox. Balance updates are few and far between. All future DLC is paid, and will never show up in matchmaking.
2022: MP is completely free across all platforms. Balance updates will come regularly. All future content is also free to play, including Forge and (should it release) Firefight.
F2P is significantly better for a live service multiplayer game than what we had before. The campaign can be supported by a single payment of $60. Live service games can’t. They cost too much and require too much attention. This is literally the best of both worlds.
A solid deal is playing the Campaign on game pass and only paying for 1 month of gamepass. However gamepass other great games that make it worth the cost.
It’s sad, but games have gotten a lot more expensive and they have to recouperate the costs somehow. Most of it is due to the art being more detailed or photorealistic and the programming to deliver on those graphics. There is also the network programming side of things, which is always evolving to try to prevent malicious behavior. Then there are the larger companies giving unnecessary jobs to people whose duties can be done by others with more interdisciplinary experience.
Sure, games might sell more, but the price has stayed the same, so profits aren’t as large as they have been before.
Just stick with indie titles and niche publishers, honestly. There is a whole world that most gamers don’t know anything about outside of what’s at the The Game Awards.
$60 has been the price of a new game since 2005. Because of inflation, that means games are cheaper than they have ever been.
Like movies, music, books, and other entertainment media, video games are generally sold at one of a number of fixed price points, rather than some weird precise calculation of “value” with an exact dollar:unit-of-value pricing.
In other words, buying a game is like buying a movie ticket, not buying bananas.
If you have a problem with this model, okay sure, that’s your opinion, but it’s not realistic to expect Halo to break this industry standard. It’s a huge single player game. AAA games generally cost $60 USD, regardless of what features they have.
If you don’t like that price then don’t get it. Get Game Pass, or wait a couple years for sales and whatnot.
Pretty negative way to look at it. Personally I think paying $60 for the campaign which is most likely much larger than any Halo before it and having a free mp is better than tying the mp to the campaign so people who just want to play mp would have to pay $60 for a campaign they don’t even want while mp would still be the same as it is now as a free game.
The way we have it now is people who just want campaign pay $60 just like they would have before when it was tied to mp. People who want both have to pay $60 just like before. Then people who just want mp don’t have to pay anything because mp is free but okay, this is somehow a bad thing I guess. Why do you want everyone to pay $60 regardless if they don’t even want both components?
I think most people wouldn’t mind paying $100 for a complete experience of both campaign and multiplayer. The argument is no one asked for a F2P multiplayer with an additional cost of a battle pass. All we want is a complete game for 1 price. We don’t mind paying for DLC maps every so often for the new content. We do mind feeling like we are being gouged out money for an experience that used to be all encompassing.
I will say, while the customization is terrible right now, if they make some big changes (make everything cross-core compatible, for example), eventually there will be a lot of customization items even for free players. The weekly rewards, for example, will add 52 items per year that are free to everyone. Event passes will also add more free items. So, eventually, there will probably be as much free customization stuff in this game as in any past game, plus lots more paid options. Not saying I like the way they’re doing it, but I do think it’ll get better over time
The game needs an overhaul. This BS saying this game is “Halo” is an insult to Halo.
Red vs Blue shouldn’t have been removed.
Fall damage should be a thing.
Collision shouldn’t have ever been removed.
Weapons/vehicles/? the so-call “balancing” has ruined a lot of them.
MP shouldn’t have ever been turned to f2p. This screwed up the entire customization and was only done for 343 benefit.
The players that bought the battle pass are being treated as if this game is a “looter shooter”. The reality here is, Halo is not and never will be. Don’t know who came up with that flawed logic within 343.
I could go on, but the truth here is, this generic Halo needs an overhaul.
