Based on my intrepretation, it sounds to me like he wasn’t provided enough freedom in developing the direction the game was going. Similarily to how it was time for Bungie to move on after 5 Halo’s, this guy probably felt as though he wanted to be in a position as a Creative Director where he could implement more creativity. Creativity in which he was unable to find for an existing IP with everything fleshed out. I have no doubts H4 will be amazing, jut appears to have not been the best fit for Mr. Payton.
I have a bad feeling about this. Not that Halo will be highly affected because he left, but because he simply didn’t like it.
I hope 343 won’t ruin it. They must have many ideas, but I don’t think that combining them all will be a good idea.
“The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don’t think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through.”
Hmmm… that’s a pretty interesting quote. I wonder if the new Halo wasn’t as much of a change as he was hoping for? Or was going some place he hadn’t envisioned it going? My curiosity is piqued.

My bet is that he wanted Master Chief to sneak through a Covenant armory, plant bombs on the reactors, steal battlecruiser schematics, escape, and blow up the facility with being seen by a single enemy…
… for anyone who has not heard the director of Halo 4 at 343 has recently quit stating the reason behind his depature was down to not being “creatively excited” for the project anymore.
There has also been some uncomfirmed information stating that “Ryan Payton” the creative director was one of 14 of the development team on Halo 4 who were considering resigning, according to a uncomfirmed source there is conflict internally inside the studio and development on the latest title is grinding to a halt.
Another report also states they have leaked game information from Ryan Payton that will be released to the internet shortly.
Sounds like good news to me if this is what he wanted. Thank You 343 for bringing us HALO.
“The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don’t think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through,”–creative director Ryan Payton (Emphasis Mine)
Maybe he quit purely because he didn’t like his job it says that he didn’t find it exciting anymore, I mean I would find it hard to be always excited for a game for 2 or 3 years even if it is Halo

This, he isn’t finding his job fun anymore, he is expecting EVERYTHING to be the same when things will always change, regardless of who you are.
IGN has a better version than some website i’ve seen so far.
But he took pain to stress that it wasn’t because the game was turning out badly. It was simply not in line with his original vision. "The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don’t think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through.
“I think time is the most valuable thing we have,” said Payton, “and I’ve decided that I’m not going to waste one more day working on something that doesn’t speak to my values.”
The reason is pretty clear, he just didn’t like the way the game was going. It’s hard to continue on making something you so much wanted to be different. Seems like he wasn’t the right man to take that job in the long run.
