Just thought I’d share this here. It’s basically Frank O’Connor commenting on Ryan Payton’s departure, former position and the affect (or lack of) that the departure has had on the Halo 4 team.
Great article, just reinforced what I already thought.
Hmm, I remember this and being told before that his departure isn’t going to affect Halo 4.

Sounds like Frankie wasn’t really fond of him anyways…
I wouldn’t think it would.
I love Metal Gear Solid, I do. But that type of narrative style wouldn’t work with Halo.
…
I’m now going to imagine a CODEC sequence between Cortana and Master Chief and it’s all that article’s fault.
I am very encouarged by this whole thing. Especailly when Frank O’Conner said:
"Ryan comes from a Japanese gaming background; he worked on Metal Gear, obviously, and he chose a fairly surreal blend of storytelling and action. I think he wanted to do something much more…
. .
…don’t want to speak for him, that’s so unfair, but definitely coming from his Japanese narrative background, the narrative design stuff that he was doing with Halo was very sort of European-American style of conventional narrative story-telling," he added.“I can absolutely see why he wouldn’t find that challenging and innovative. I wish him well. He wasn’t working on game design at all.”
I have nothing against Japanese type games I loved the MGS games but that is not Halo. I am glad they didn’t go in this direction.
I’m a huge fan of Metal Gear, in fact if I’m completely honest, it trumps Halo in my book, but I’m glad they’re not turning Halo into Metal Gear. From what i recall, Ryan Payton came back to America for family reasons. I think he may have still wanted to work on Metal Gear, or at least something similar, and felt restricted by Halo. I love both series but Halo should remain Halo and MGS should remain MGS.
I’m glad. Halo deserves to return to it’s past glory, with simplicity being its most influential factor. Payton no doubt would’ve created something far from Halo’s core.
Clearer now.
