It is frustrating, hopefully something will improve. Thank you for your excellent response ![]()
I played my 10 matches today and did my worst ever in the history of halo my gun felt like it wasn’t even damaging the enemy I mean it was a complete JOKE… My connection has been dog crap, I lag every game, I get killed behind walls, nothing ever seems to go my way… I play social go plus 20 K/D and get matched with pros in ranked so MMR is still in ranked… I haven’t played one match today that wasn’t MGL pro tournament every game… that with lag is just unbelievable…
Is it just me or is it worse in the ranked servers than the social servers?

Around the middle of last year, my Dad finally convinced my Mum to try Halo. Well, it turns out she thinks it’s great. She played some games with my Dad’s account and he convinced her to set up her own profile and work through the achievements. My Mum, is a stay at home Mum and has a bit of time during the day, to have a few games. Just after she set up her profile on the X-Box, she started to get a few friends. At least one of her friends on the list, lives in the U.S. She gets some time during the day, to play some Halo. This friend in the U.S. and her have played co-op on every game included in the MCC. She said apart from a couple of rare problems with Halo 1 and 2, the co-op on MCC has performed without any problems whatsoever. They have played Halo 5 on co-op right through and she said there was no problem at all. They are now playing Halo Wars 1 on co-op and are about three quarters of the way through and they have plans to go on to Halo Wars 2 next. She said there has been a couple of disconnects with Halo Wars 1, where the game will say, " Mission Failed ". They just restart the level and keep going.
Mum did try Infinite. She said it’s just to frustrating to play, due to all the problems described in this thread. She is looking forward to co-op, whenever that is, but in the meantime, they have tried teaming up to do BTB, Fiesta and Ranked. She said they had endless problems, especially disconnects.
So now I would like to turn this post into more of a series of questions. I don’t really understand all the technical talk about computer games. Game engine, nodes etc etc So I ask those who have a better understanding about these matters. Why can Mum ( and all of us here actually ) play all of the MCC games, Halo 5 including Warzone and Halo Wars 1, with almost no trouble whatsoever ( with someone on the opposite side of the planet ! ) but Infinite is unplayable ? Does the MCC, Halo 5 and Halo Wars, run on a different ‘engine’ ? Does Infinite have a higher ’ information exchange ', ’ frame rate ', whatever, that causes problems ? Does Infinite just go so much ’ faster ’ than every other game, that our sub par internet connection just can’t handle it ? Or is it that Infinite is just, plain and simple, broken ?
I’m really just trying to understand this, from those of you who know what you are talking about.
From what you’ve said above it sounds like your mum and her friend are playing co-op campaign on those games? If so, that is a whole different ball game to online multiplayer. With co-op, you’re essentially connected to one other person and playing with each other on a campaign environment which is referred to as PvE (player vs environment); where as Halo Infinite there isn’t co-op campaign yet so you have to connect and play with or against up to another 23 players (4v4 or 12v12), and this is called PvP (player vs player). You wouldn’t experience the same issues playing with someone in PvE as you would in PvP due to the amount of data being sent to and from the game servers.
Yes. Each of those games run on different engines…and Halo Infinite is on a different engine too. It’s a mess!
Not necessarily. Online gaming doesn’t really need a really fast connection…more important is the stability of your connection than speed. Higher frame rates are possible in Halo Infinite depending on what console/PC and TV/monitor you are playing on.
No. That would be because you are playing PvP rather than PvE co-op, and this is why the stability of your connection causes problems (ie latency, packet loss, noise, etc).
Halo Infinite is undeniably broken and in a mess…but unfortunately your connection doesn’t sound like it’s good enough…or certainly not helping matters. Have any of you tried and tested playing PvP on Halo5 or Halo MCC? If so, do you experience the same issues? Have you tried any other PvP games such as Call of Duty to see if that’s any better?
First of all, thank you so much for reading and replying ![]()
Dad has done quite a bit of PvP on MCC and Halo 5, he says he very rarely has trouble.
No, we actually don’t play any games but Halo. I think it may be time to try out these other games and see if you are correct ![]()
With all the complaints about Infinite, your information about it being a broken mess appears to be very accurate.
A big
to you from the Land Down Under !!
That may be because in MCC and Halo5 they actually have server selection/filtering implemented so chances are you may be connecting to AUS servers in those games rather than being forced to play on US servers in Halo Infinite. There is a Halo Infinite server in Sydney so in theory you should be connecting to that but judging by the number of complaints from down under, not many players seem to be doing so. What ping are you seeing in game on Halo Infinite?
I am certainly learning a lot from this ![]()
I am sorry, but how do I check that ?
P.S. You are being very helpful and I REALLY do appreciate this ![]()
When you’re in Halo Infinite, go to Settings > UI then scroll down a bit and tick the check box for “Network Statistics”. This will display your ping in milliseconds (ms) in the top right hand corner of your screen, so when you start a game you will see what ping you have to the server. If it’s above 100ms then you’re most likely not connected to Sydney and probably connecting to either Singapore, Hong Kong or Los Angeles servers (your ping to Sydney will also depend on how far you’re away from server plus your actual connection speed/quality).
Thanks so much, your help is awesome. As soon as I get a chance, I am going to check all this.

Hey yall! So I bit the bullet and bought a new router. My old router was about 8 years old but still holding good connection speeds well within the max my ISP provides for me. Well wouldn’t you know, Ive been playing 3 evenings worth now and have seen only ONE unstable ping/latency message and it didnt really affect the game. Mind you, the upload and download speeds are identical but obviously something is different. The router is a Netgear AC2000. Not even close to a top of the line router and yet… works perfectly so far.
Could you please keep your findings updated here? I’m having the same issues as everyone else with infinite and if a new router worked for you I may have to bite the bullet and buy a new one myself
Did your old router work ok with other games? Everyone shouldn’t have to buy a new router just to play Halo. I suspect your issues haven’t been resolved by just buying a new router…could it be that there are default settings in your new router that simply weren’t applied or available on your old one?
Everything is still working so much better with the new router. Ive had the unstable latency message only one more time, so two total now. Game is much more enjoyable and reliable now.
I agree, everyone shouldn’t have to buy a new router and yes, my old router was flawless outside of Halo Infinite. I have no idea how or why it works better. All settings for the old router and new one were default. No port forwarding or anything. Now, the new one does advertise “priority traffic for gaming and streaming” or something like that but I don’t know what that entails.
