Role of the Guardians

With the guardians introduced in halo 5 I question whether they were ever mentioned in previous media concerning the forerunners. Also, if they are powerful enough to police whole systems, why were they not used against the flood? Why did the forerunners store them in planets?

The only thing I can think of is that Halo 3 was meant to have a Guardian Sentinel as an enemy. But yeah, the Guardians came out of nowhere. You’d expect something of their magnitude to appear in the Forerunner Saga…

They were probably susceptible to the Logic Plague. The Armigers were.

I thought about that but one of the Halo wiki’s said that the armigers were used to combat the flood by the forerunners.

They were meant to keep other races down, which we never saw, only heard of.

The closest as the San’shyuum, but their containment was a bit more personal, but my understanding is that until the Master Builder got involved, their containment was maintained by 1 forerunner and a ton of robots.

Forerunners were still utilizing AI’s till the very end of the war, attempting various methods to slow the logic plague. They were desperate and used what they could. The battles aren’t terrible detailed though. Compared to most vessels in the forerunner saga, Guardians are still relatively small fry.

I agree they were desperate so I don’t understand why they would take the time to bury huge guardians inside entire planets rather than use them to fight the flood. I question if they were buried before the human-forerunner war or the flood-forerunner was for reasons unknown.

As a means of control, wouldn’t it be quite terrifying to know that the gargantuan machine that can control your technology is buried beneath the world you live on, waiting to be used?

They could have been constructed by the ark and placed post-firing for all we know. The Librarian intended for humanity to gain the mantle, and the guardians are the forerunner interpretation of holding it.

I was thinking the same thing. This is why I don’t see why they were buried in the first place or at least mentioned before halo 5.

^ Exuberant Witness does quite explicitly state that they were used by the Forerunners to police the various systems in the galaxy though.

I can see that being a possibility, and that would make sense. That’s a good point.

I only remember hearing it had the capability to police entire systems.

Cortana says that she plans to use the Guardians as they were used by the Forerunners, putting down and maintaining rebellious systems.

The Guardians were meant to police the “lower” species, which would not count the Humans or San’Shyuum, definitely the Sangheili since it was on their homeworld.

I can see this ^^ as a possibility
