I have played a few games, and for the most part it is enjoyable.
However, I probably won’t be playing it too much due to the fact that when I am ejected from the mongoose I can only get back on and resume the role I initially spawned as. This just seems silly to me. Why do I not have the option? Not to mention the fact that if my driver is ejected and not me, then I have to wait for him/her to make his/her way back to the mongoose or respawn.
Also not having radar when driving, and having it when you are a gunner seems a little counterproductive. The driver needs to be able to see what is going on around him/her just as much as the gunner.
I have to say I am a little disappointed to the degree that I will probably just go back to Slayer, and finishing up my weapons commendation.
That said, 2 of those were complex, which I strongly disagree with. Too many twists, narrows, obstacles, by the time you get somewhere it’s gone. I think blood gulch would be perfect for this, Complex and ones like it need to go IMO.

Played a bunch of games last night and must say that it’s working pretty well. Much better effort then was given to the race playlist so thanks for that.
Points:
Plenty of maps adds to the variety.
Some of the hill placements are a bit awkward or too obscured by scenery.
It would be good if you could destroy a mongoose but I guess its turned off to stop griefers. The Reach model where you could only kill people who are on foot was perfect.
Nice and quick teleport time back to the goose.
I find myself hoping the game starts with less then 6 teams as the maps aren’t quite big enough for that many. 4 or 5 teams works much better.
Radar is great but I agree that I’d like it as the driver as well.
Team colours have been an issue since launch. Multiple shades of green are to similar to each other. Surely you can find 6 unique colours.
I just wanted to deliver a megaton THANK YOU to 343i for bringing back Rocket Race, after an excruciating absence and poor treatment in Reach. After my first few games it felt almost exactly like old times on Halo 3. You guys pulled it off without a hitch IMO, and I am grateful.
My only grievance right now is the condition of Meltdown. The placement of some hills makes it a bit awkward to get around (and frustrating when a hill spawns on a bridge while one is passing underneath). That, and the occasional well placed rocket that seems to have no effect on its intended mongoose. Otherwise, you’ve got a home run here.
This is classic Halo fun. Thanks for finally bringing this back, 343. I think it is the best Rocket Race yet.
Things I like: Roles for each person. The driver has no radar and must focus on the hill and his line of sight. Gunner has radar, which driver doesn’t. Gunner’s role is pivotal both offensively and defensively. Only OOB kills prevents unsporting behavior.
Things I don’t like: Not much, really. Being unable to switch seats, I guess. Minor quibble overall.
Things I’d like to see: A larger, more open spaces like Hemorrhage. Can’t wait to see what the community offers up.
The population is very encouraging… maybe this will stay permanent and see Rocket Hog added to the mix?
Edited. Edits summed up: Encourages fast and furious teamwork and gameplay. So much fun.
It’s Rocket Race, the game that’s full of high speed and explosions that all enjoy. However, the current form or RR needs some alterations. Not balance and weapons, but fundamental conveniences that were taken for granted when the game-type was created, such as the ability to switch seats, and the fact that 12 players is WAY to many. I mean, I understand you have to have enough people on the map so the ADHD kids can be constantly engaged in combat so they don’t quit because there are 2 seconds of downtime… but come on! Why don’t you just make a big toilet to play RR in? Only include the RR game-type in BTB!
These simple things make RR no longer strategic and fluent, but chaotic and uncontrollable (just the way the rest of the game is).
The ability to switch drivers is EXTREMELY important if you have an 11 year-old partner who can shoot well, but can’t drive to save his life. Or, an old Dad, who has reflexes that can only be used for long distance sniping (which you can do in RR). I play with both, and I hate their driving. And I can’t switch! It’s pathetic! And with the overwhelming amount of rockets constantly slamming from all sides, it makes it impossible to do anything. It would help if the maps were at least half the size of Sandtrap… everything is so cramped it’s just chaos.
I don’t know what all goes into altering a few things in a game-type for matchmaking, but decreasing the player count to 8 instead of 12, and allowing the players to switch positions on the goose would drastically improve the flow of the game.
Don’t get me wrong, I love RR, that is why I spend so much time criticizing it.
> Oh how I missed you, Rocket Race. Thanks for finally bringing this back, 343. A welcome holiday present indeed.
>
> Things I like: Radar for gunner only - genius!
I was hoping you could elaborate why you have this opinion. I have the opposite opinion. My thoughts on it are, it is crucial for the driver to help with driving in general. I would go as far as, if it has to be one or the other, it should be the driver over the gunner.

> Things I don’t like: Being unable to switch seats. Sometimes you get unsportsmanlike mates, other times the driver admits he just isn’t very good at driving but can’t do anything to change it.
>
> Things I’d like to see: Less cluttered maps. The current ones play well but sometimes get crowded. I long for the wide open Hemorrhage as an option. Can’t wait to see what the community offers up.

Only on well designed maps, a very small few in particular.
> 7. Thank you for disabling vehicle and player damage. Please keep it as is and ignore the pleas of the commendation hunters, kill farmers and griefers.
Like in Reach the damage should be able to be self inflicted, but if you can unseat the crew you can kill them and that takes them longer to respawn, a vital tactic. or indeed a few well placed rockets causing a vehicle to go out of bounds.
The odd thing is damage isn’t prevented, just death, I fail to see why in all honesty. I played a game today with my nephew and I was driving and he was gunner, someone quit, and when the game returned I was ‘gunner’ and he was driving. I had a gravity hammer, yes a gravity hammer, but it didn’t work, and would only work with melee. Two of the other teams had a pistol for the gunner, and the other two had rockets, needless to say the 2 with rockets came first and second. Seems like a few glitches.
> It’s becoming inreasingly more frustrating. Too many teams, too much flipping back to back it seems. I’d go to four teams. Ragnarok is nice however.
>
> New maps made just for this are needed, for sure.
Yeah, agreed. 4 teams worked beautifully on Sandtrap back in Halo 3. When it’s more spread out, you get cool tactics like deflecting rockets with well placed rockets, using explosives on the map to blast you from one end of the map to the other, and many more very creative and fun things. When you cram too many players into small maps, all you get is chaos and you never know when you should drive from one side of the map to the other because by the time you get back on your goose after being flipped (which is every two seconds) someone has already driven across the small map. It’s overwhelming.
Since the maps can’t be changed, the amount of players needs to be decreased, in my opinion.
Here is a good video showcasing what Rocket Race was and could be (not that I am just trying to relive the glory days, it’s just that RR had a fine balance, and it worked, why not try to use the same settings?) if set up differently. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-tGXAcMnOo
I’ve said this many times, Rocket Race needs a permanent home in matchmaking. Seeing around or well over 2K players (compared to what Race had) at any given moment is great to see.

> A welcome treat over the holidays. Thank you for bringing back Rocket Race.
>
> A few initial thoughts:
>
> 1. Merry Christmas!
>
> 2. Please combine Rocket Race with Race and make a permanent playlist. Schnell !
>
> 3. Please fix the horn so it functions properly.
>
> 4. Please enable sensors for both the driver and gunner.
>
> 5. The scoring is peculiar. Both players on each team should share the same points and medals.
>
> 6. Since lobby quitting is rampant, please ensure that each team is whole before starting the match.
>
> 7. Thank you for disabling vehicle and player damage. Please keep it as is and ignore the pleas of the commendation hunters, kill farmers and griefers.
>
> 8. Please allow player positions to be interchangeable.
>
> 9. Some maps seem congested. Would benefit from a few large-scale tracks (à la Sandtrap and Sandbox) on Impact and Forge Island.
Agreed
Agreed. That was one thing I hated about RR in Halo 3 and Reach.
