I’m really enjoying this game mode.
Only thing is there are definitely people that are just in there to slay. Fine if you’re acting as support I guess, but maybe at least try to log some hill time?

You see this across all Obj gametypes, sadly. There are people who see it as a mode where they can get upwards of 100 kills without ending the game.
My recommendation is to ask around and find some people who are on at the same time as you and form a team to play with.
If you look at the good teams there is always a “slayer” his (or her) job is to kill players so their teammates can “do” the Obj.

I get that. Was just venting. I search solo and most matches there are always a couple people on my team who contribute maybe 10 seconds to the score. I know the solution is to team up.
My only explanation is that slaying is the easiest part of Halo, and since most players play without mics, and join random games… they know coming up with any sort of grand battle plan is useless without communication, so instead, many players mainly focus on slaying and then hope that the remaining players tend to the objectives. Now, any decent Halo player knows that you have to let the blood lust settle because that flag still needs cap’d or that Stronghold retaken, but I guess sometimes players can get caught up in all the chaos of Halo…

In my opinion there are two types of slayers
You only need one in the hill to score. Having a buddy to back you up helps sure, but the others can be out there stopping the enemy from getting close to the hill while you control it.
I’m usually playing that support role so my team mates can me in there. Grabbing sniper on Plaza and covering my team so we can win the game. It’s shooting fish in a barrel when all 4 players jump inside the hill
I do both. I don’t try to get my kills up playing CTF though, simply because when the other team respawns, they’re close to their flag compared to dying by ours. That can mess up your team when they’re trying to grab the flag but can’t because you have teammates who are only going around killing people, making the other team respawn close to their own flag, creating a defense for them pretty much. Most I do is to distract by try and flanking with grenades. Try to throw them off or something but I never only go for kills. That’s when I play Slayer or another variant of it.

I’m this person, personally. I’m always the Slayer or Support person in Objective game modes, which tbh, is 90% of the games I’ve played since the Halo 2 days. I’ll reclaim territories/hills or arm a bomb when urgent (end of round, enemy about to win, etc), but as long as my teammates know what to do I don’t interfere. I strictly slay otherwise to enable them to do what they need to do.
The problem comes in that most people seriously still don’t grasp the concept that you HAVE to slay in order to do the objective properly. Yeah, you’ll get the random edge cases here and there where a team didn’t pay attention while slaying to catch a bomb carrier arming a bomb, but it’s far and few between. I get resets, returns, andacarrier kills on objectives significantly more than captures, arms, or scores because of this. It’s just as important to play the defensive side of the field as well.
For me it really depends on the game flow. If I’m better slaying to help the team succeed, I will try to balance between that and objective. If I realize I’m clearly inferior in skill, I try to focus on the objective so I don’t risk losing due to my poor performance.
I appreciate all the dialogue here.
I’ve honestly witnessed people on my team and the opposing team just hang out near the hill, clean up a few kills, then literally run through the hill, not even stopping in it to accumulate any time. This is an example of someone who cares not about winning an objective game, only about going 17-2 with a couple of triple kills.
That’s always been a thing and I’ve been guilty of doing it myself in objective games although I will try to win as well instead of just strictly going for kills. Not much you can do except to go after that guy and shut him down or play with a team so you won’t have to deal with those teammates.
