RIP Halo CE: The end of an era

<taken from slashdot.com>

> Over the last month, both game publishers and gaming communities alike were surprised to find their GameSpy multiplayer support suddenly disabled by GLU Mobile, who purchased GameSpy from IGN this August. Many games, including Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2, Microsoft Flight Simulator X, Swat 4, Sniper Elite, Hidden and Dangerous 2, Wings of War, Star Wars: Battlefront are no longer able to find (and in some cases even host) multiplayer games. While games like Neverwinter Nights are still able to directly connect to servers if players know the IP address, less-fortunate gamers expressed outrage on GLU Mobile’s ‘Powered by GameSpy’ Facebook page. In an open letter to their Sniper Elite gaming community today, UK game developer Rebellion explained it was helpless to change the situation: 'A few weeks ago, the online multiplayer servers for Sniper Elite were suddenly switched off by Glu, the third-party service we had been paying to maintain them. This decision by Glu was not taken in consultation with us and was beyond our control. We have been talking to them since to try and get the servers turned back on. We have been informed that in order to do so would cost us tens of thousands of pounds a year — far in excess of how much we were paying previously. We also do not have the option to take the multiplayer to a different provider. Because the game relies on Glu and Gamespy’s middleware, the entire multiplayer aspect of the game would have to be redeveloped by us, again, at the cost of many tens of thousands of pounds.

well, this is it.

It was a good run, and I suppose it was bound to happen eventually

and so ends the 11 year legacy of a fantastic game.

It’s a tragedy, ahh the memories!

I saw this on Halopedia, and though I never played much Halo PC, I was a little saddened.

This is a disappointment! Battlefront is also on that list!

Hello everyone, Im a quite new Halo-gamer and only played “CE” that as I understand can be either “Combat Evolved” or “Custom edition” but I played the old trial CE only and found it very amusing to not always play chess on the PC wich is what I did for many years. I simply didnt need more than that trial but ofcourse I would buy the full game if I found it simply. (I have some other games I never play since I found Halo trial, such as BHD and BF but they are worse) 11 years is much but for me it was only months, Im really sad about it, it sudenly came up no servers and ofcourse I thought the problem was in the firewall, but not. I loved the map “moving hill” team on the server in Japan. Let me ask, cant we connect directly to the servers if we have their IP? If those old servers now are down to cause gamespy doesnt direct to them, why cant we make a server or several servers and go with direct IP-play? It seem to be mainly an information-problem, to let players know the IP-numbers. If anyone here set up a game for IP-play, note that its NOT the IP-number starting with 192. – cause those IP:s are LOCAL only and if they are not you are in trouble with your pc-safety. One have find the WAN-IP (going out on the internet) and if one have a router its to be found in the software for it, or its possible to find the right IP with the command IPCONFIG/all in the command-mode (like old DOS) -if I remember right. Its also possible to find your IP on several websites that shows it for you. But note that due to your settings or ISP-provider its possible that the IP change everytyme you log on if you shut down your PC. I cant set up a sever just now cause I use only 3G mobilephone-internet… (use the phone as a modem) Lets hear from you folks, btw I was “Nottakiller” and loved to play with the masters MITOBRAZIL, TEDDYBEAR and many more.

Just now and one hour or so a small test for IP-play, CE (trial)
if anyone here happen to have time and the game in the PC.

IP 90.129.137.123

(firewall must be opened for Halo.exe)

Im afraid that this forum is only for XBOX ???
I didnt check that before joining and posting
I found the forum with Googling my problem…
I dont even know if the trial was played with xbox and pc:s in the same games?

Noone came and I also tried to connect from another computer, managing the firewalls in both, one XP and one Win7, but it didnt work at all to connect.
I used the right IP and also the right port (2302 = standard)

This is bad!!! Anyone tested direct IP-play?

What?! But I was just about to get this game for PC and now the servers are down?

Great first Halo 2 and now Halo CE sigh It was a great run, now only Halo 3 remains - the only real Halo.

It can’t be done…

I want to know more, are you using xbox or pc, and not CE but Halo 3?
Where are all CE-players? Never here?
And does CE mean custom edition or combat evolved to ppl here?
I know nothing about custom edition, at halo maps forum I cant even read out if that edition still works on multiplayer or not.
My problem is combat evolved and nothing else.
So ofcourse I wanna know if anyone tried to connect “direct-IP” which is a possibility in multiplayer mode.
If that can work its NOTHING more needed than a website that shows up the IP-numbers (and ports if not default port 2302) for some servers that can take 32 players each or something.
-And I hope for the HILL-variant / teams and moving hills to and the trial map Bloodgulch must be includet for my sake
Also the new website must clear things out about the most usual variants of firewalls.
Please start a CE trial server someone and tell us the IP.
Its hopeless to browse to fins anyone that wasnt up only temporary some years ago.

How can something like this happen?

:frowning:

Goodbye friend. I’ll see you starside…

Only the trial version has been effected so far.

I’m not sure if or when Halo PC will be effected, at the moment services for the full version of Halo PC and Custom Edition are still up and running

P.S. In case your wondering, Halo PC’s 10 year anniversary will be on September 30th 2013 (December 11th for Mac) I believe.

This hasn’t affected the full version yet, and it may never affect it. If it ever happens it won’t be hard at all to work around it. Lots of people are still playing old games that have no official servers, a perfect example is Tribes.

Wow, rather dissapointed considering I was going to buy Halo PC very soon, becasue I am not very happy with Halo 4.
