SPOILER WARNING
Hello, so just a quick warning that there is a campaign spoiler in the below. So if you haven’t completed the campaign, you might want to do that first.
So, first is kind of like the review. I want to say that I enjoy the gameplay, it is fun. Also, I have completed the campaign and whilst it was fun the story was boring as nothing really happened. And I was disappointed to go through the whole campaign with the impression that Atriox was dead. It literally left me with the feeling that the kick -Yoink!- beating Chief got in the opening cutscene was a waste, because now I can’t ‘get even’ and have a rematch. I had that disappointing notion in my head throughout the whole game. I am glad he isn’t dead, but what was he doing? And it would have been so much better to see him in the campaign, to know that everything we were doing was leading to a final confrontation with Atriox! Even if he wasn’t the boss fight in this story arc, he can leave others to deal with the Chief so he could carry out his plans. But the excitement leading to our final confrontation would build over into future events. That would have been better than the heavy breathing ape I had to deal with in my ears. I understand from media that there was a lot of conflicting departments and lack of coordination within 343i working on the campaign. I imagine cleaning that up led to this underwhelming campaign story. I only hope that with future content and development you guys are more coherently focused, singularly driven to provide us with some exciting and ring-world shattering phenomenon!
Also, it is really sad that up to 4 player co-op campaign was not a thing on release. I really hope that is something you guys are adding, I have read that it is but I just hope it happens.
For those of you that liked the story, because I am sure there are those that did, I have no beef with your opinions. I am glad you liked it. It is just that for me, and I am thinking for others as well, there was a lot missing from the content of the story.
But what I did love was the gameplay, that made it fun for me. I loved the open world and exploring. I enjoyed using all the gadgets and the grapple hook made it feel like I was doing some extreme rock climbing trying to get to some places! Very well done on that. I especially loved how many marines there were about and I loved filling up a Razorback and rolling up to an enemy base or operation that I had to take. I also loved seeing more marines on patrol like they are securing checkpoints on the ring and having any follow you if there is room in your squad. I am one of those players that likes to save my marines and do a Roll Call to count my survivors after every fight. If any were missing I’d look for the bodies. What I am hoping is that we can up the scale of the marine’s involvement in this Halo game.
Now for the feedback after completing the campaign and currently having completed all of the weekly challenges.
I have to say that this state of limbo with nothing to do is something that needs filling for the overall experience of the game. Once you have completed the campaign and done all the side activities… there is nothing to do in the campaign. Like, you can wander around aimlessly with a group of marines picking fights, but you have no objective and nothing to accomplish. And I am one of these players that does all of the side missions before carrying on with the story, so when I finished the campaign and Chief asked for a “list of what’s left to do” my list was empty
. Now when I do the campaign again, I can leave the side missions till after I have completed the story, but I’ll still have nothing left when it’s all done. I’ll have to restart… again.
And likewise with the multiplayer. I always get to the stage where I have run out of weekly challenges to do and when I complete the 6 daily challenges I am playing for 50xp a match and making no progression on the battlepass. Now, for people that don’t want to pay for the battlepass that will be infuriating. Because you earn hardly any rewards from the battlepass unless you pay for it and there are so few rewards for free, but you have to grind pretty high to achieve them. So, playing for 50xp and making no progress is not rewarding and you get that ‘What’s the point’ feeling. Of course, you can play for the love of the game, and I do because it is still fun, but that feeling does dishearten you and has an impact on your ‘love for the game’.
So, for my suggestions and requests for future content, development and improvements of the game!
Story - I have already touched on my say of the story and what I wanted, but I want to see Atriox take the lead and have us chase him to impede his progress across the ring. I hope that in the next story expansion we see more of a comeback from the UNSC as well. Considering that in the main campaign we shut down all of the Banished operations, eliminated HVTs, freed all the FOBs and saved those marine squads. I think that the UNSC would have a foothold and sizable force to combat the banished now and it would be cool if the UNSC wasn’t limited to the use of one pelican. Perhaps reinforcements could arrive, as the video introduction to the academy did show us as spartans in training and our commander went to respond to a situation about the missing fleet. So seeing spartans on the Halo ring would be awesome. And the discovery of the Infinity as well, perhaps even a restoration of the goliath ship!
But I would also like to see the return of some characters. Chiefly Spartan Locke (I hope the rumours of his death are untrue), Blue Team, Fireteam Osiris (except Vale) and last but certainly not least… THE ARBITER!!! It would be extremely cool if the Arbiter and his Elite forces were to join the conflict against the Banished and back up the UNSC. And I also hope that with story expansions we get to see other parts of the ring, rather than everything taking place on the singular part everyone seems to have landed on.
Campaign Content - Ok, here I think things can get really exciting and it’s going off what is already in the campaign of infinite and my ideas for story development above!
Firstly, I have to advocate again the return of co-op campaign of up to four players. But what I think would be a cool idea is if the other players that back the Master Chief up… were our own spartans from the Multiplayer! And you could incorporate that into the story as well. If the launch campaign remains single player, but through story progression in the next campaign we have the return of spartans, then our spartans can be like those in the campaign! That is just an idea, but I’d love to see my spartan or my friends spartan alongside the Master Chief.
Secondly, having other playable characters with the advancement of the story and exploration of new locations on the ring. Again, this is an idea. I will not complain about having the Master Chief as the only playable character if that is the way it has to be. But if we could, and if we do see the return of characters like the Arbiter and Locke, it would be cool to play as these characters as they carry out their missions across the ring to combat the Banished and of course uncover secrets of Zeta Halo. And if you do this and you include the Arbiter in this idea, then for Co-op the other players could play as his elites (so yes, I would like to see the return of playable elites and include them in the multiplayer). Maybe a little story arc where we play as Spartan Buck as well, that would be fun. And don’t you dare tell me Spartan Buck is dead!!! Also… on that note, can we have the ODSTs back in the game as well? I miss fighting with those guys. And they should be better than the marines too, make them harder to kill.
Now thirdly, the marines and in game events. And I don’t mention these guys third because I think they are least important. In fact for me, and for filling in this void at the end of the campaign, they are extremely important. First of all, I think the marines should be able to operate vehicles. It was a little disappointing when I rescued a group of marines and of the 5 marines following me, two of them could only follow on foot rather than grab the spare warthog when mine was full. It’s a very cool feature that they can swap out their own weapons for better ones, but they should also be able to use the UNSC vehicles that are sitting empty next to them. And it would be very cool driving in a tank or warthog with marines rolling in behind with a vehicle of their own. Or, calling in a bunch of wasps and dominating the sky and having dogfights with the banshees. Which leads me to my second idea, I’d love to see skirmishes between the Banished and the UNSC along the ring. Like if Banished and UNSC patrols randomly come across each other and duked it out, like a scorpion strolling in on some brutes, a warthog coming across a wraith, foot forces just having a shoot out or banshee and wasp squads engaging each other. I would get drawn into any of those randoms encounters, or maybe just watch for a bit. But if you wanted to one up that, in addition to those skirmishes you could have pop-up encounters where UNSC forces need help defeating Banished forces. It would be like the ‘Squad Rescue’ feature in the campaign, but this could be a random and time limited event. Or, they could be attacking the FOBS. And the outcome could have an impact on the control for the ring. If the Banished win then they gain control and the UNSC loses ground, so you could have more Banished in that area. So you add a territories feature to the game. And maybe if you had to take a base or Banished operation to capture that territory, then the Banished can refortify it and you have to take it again. I am just spitballing ideas now but it sounds like fun and it would keep the excitement going as I complete the campaign and even after I have finished it. I’ll still have something to do and feel like we are actually fighting for the ring. And like I said earlier on, it would be great if the UNSC had more pelicans and if they would drop off marines as reinforcements. Like when you are fighting the Banished and a phantom comes and bombards your squad whilst dropping off more foes to beat down. It would be awesome if just every once in a while the marines (or spartans) had a pelican come and offer them some support, bombard the Banished and drop of marines. And make them destroyable like the phantoms are, no need to play favourites but give them the same health as the phantoms. And the despawn for phantoms and pelicans needs to be increased until they actually leave the area. Watching them fly off and then shrink or fade out is very cheap and not very pleasing. The amount of times I have chased one in a wasp just to watch it disappear into thin air is disappointing. Also, that problem extends to the banshees too, in the middle of dog fights they will just disappear like their timers ran out. And can we extend the despawn corpses until after we have left the area? I like to look upon my battlefield when the fighting is finished and it also helps me find my fallen marines and pay my respects. Haha! I realise that isn’t an important one but it would be nice if the bodies and blood stayed until I had left the area.
I also think it would be cool if you saw the names of the marines in your squad appear next to the motion sensor, exactly as they did in Halo Reach. It would just be a cool feature to be able to keep on top of how many marines are in your squad.
And can we consider adding a mini-map on to the motion sensor? I have never needed this before in any halo game and have been very happy with it just being a motion sensor. But so many times in this campaign I had to bring up the tac map to see if I was still on the right road, and I kept thinking to myself ‘a mini-map would be great here’.
Now for Multiplayer.
I have already said it, but I think the Halo community would welcome the return of playable Elites. We would all love it and your popularity would go up. And then give the Elites customisation options as well.
For progression up the Battlepass, I know you guys are working on it, but I think it would make a difference if you award xp for winning games after those 6 daily challenges are complete. So, at the moment once you complete the 6 daily challenges which offer you a boost in xp, you only get 50xp for every game after until the reset. I think on top of that ‘Practice Makes Perfect’ 50xp challenge, you should have a 100xp challenge for winning any PvP game. That will leave players with the chance to earn 150xp if they win a match, and let’s be honest it will actually give people an incentive to win. Because right now it doesn’t matter who wins or loses any match.
I would also like to see players having the option to earn credits through gameplay. I understand that you have transitioned to a Free to Play multiplayer, and I imagine that is part of some plan to support to future development of the game. And this is fine with some players. I have heard the arguments and there are players that find paying for content gives them a chance to play the way they like, as they are too busy and cannot earn cosmetics through game progress. But likewise, the other players (and it seems like it’s most of them) that do not want to be your whales will not purchase any credits, they will not spend any amount of money on your store or your battlepass. They either do not have the money to spend on these things or do not see any worth in it. But this leads to frustration which is aimed at 343i but is echoed and argued amongst the community. But your shop is also too expensive and I have seen countless people in favour of buying credits turn and say you have taken it too far. And this can be seen when you have a bundle of 5 items in the shop which costs more than the battlepass, and people probably only want one thing in that bundle. So I would urge to re-evaluate the cost of items in your shop, and introduce an ingame method of earning credits. You can either include credits in the challenges or when ranking up the battlepass. Maybe have challenges for xp and add more challenges for credits, with credit jackpot of you do them all? This would allow all of your players to play the game the way they want. or are able to. And it makes the game more approachable whilst making content available to everyone. Right now, wearing the basic armour and coating is like a badge of honour, as it shows that you have stood your ground and not given into the Pay Wall. But this is not how it should be, it is just wrong.
Gears 5 does this perfectly, they have a shop where you need to buy gold to customise, but you can also rank up and earn gold. It’s great and I have no complaints about that games system.
I have said a lot here and I have no idea what your capabilities are or how much of what I have said is possible to include. It’s likely that none of it would be used (and I would be sad about that), but if I see that anything that I have mentioned ends up in the game I’ll be super excited as I go “I said they should do that!” Haha!
To any of my fellow Halo fans, I’d like to thank you for reading this far. Please feel free to like or comment below with your own feedback. But keep it respectful please, we all want to enjoy the game and I think we all have improvements that we would like to see.
To the 343i employee that read this far, you’re a legend. Well done, you’ve gotten to the end and it’s over!
Thank you for your time and I hope everyone continues to enjoy the game.
