Review and how to "Fix" the DMR Bloom

So a huge issue with Vanilla Halo:Reach has been the DMR and it’s blooming mechanic. So far, in the TU Beta we have seen 0% bloom, and 85% bloom.
In 343’s initial post in regards to the Title Update beta, they address that the DMR had a broken bloom mechanic that did not work properly and promoted shooting at the Max Rate of Fire, at almost any range. They said they would try 85% bloom as a trial to fix the DMR’s bloom mechanic and make it feel smoother with Halo:Reach’s gameplay.

There’s one problem.

DECREASING the bloom percentage (100% to 85%) promotes what the bloom tries to hinder. Spamming. Shooting at the Max ROF in most situations. Decreasing the bloom percentage to ANYwhere within 1% to 99% will result in a broken bloom mechanic for the DMR even further than “Vanilla” Reach. This happens because with a reduction of bloom size and same reset rate comes the motivation to shoot even faster than 100% bloom due to the fact that the bullets now land even MORE accurately no matter what ROF(Rate of Fire). Even a large percentage of the MLG community was excited to hear about the addition of a bloom in Halo:Reach upon it’s announcement over a year ago. After it was released, there was a mass wave of disappointment due to the mechanics of the new bloom.

Fortunately, there is more than one fix to this problem with 343i’s arrival in the future of Halo:Reach.

Option 1: Make the DMR work like it was supposed to; not 85% bloom, Not 0% bloom. The bloom was implemented to PUNISH the player shooting too fast to be accurate. How can we fix this you ask? Make the bloom LARGER with a FASTER reset rate. This way, kill times remain the same (or whatever speed depending on intention, and newly implemented bloom mechanics), but shooting too fast will ALWAYS punish the spammer and cause them to miss nearly every shot when the bloom is larger than their body and cause EVERY shot to miss at Max ROF unless at the correct range(nearly point blank). This can result in high or current kill times and promote pacing.

Option 2: Take the bloom completely out, like reach’s current “No Bloom” gametypes, and increase the skill gap with intelligience and playing smart; not knowing how to shoot the gun better.

“Make the bloom LARGER with a FASTER reset rate.”

I have always thought this was the answer. The reticle never gets large enough, even at full bloom, to punish spammers at the average engagement distance in Reach.

I thought they were going to try this when I first heard about 343 adjusting bloom. I wonder if they can? I would love to see how well it would work. This would be a great way to punish spamming if that is what 343 wanted to do.

They openly say that’s what the bloom was intended for, so why not make it useful the way it was supposed to?

Also, sorry about the post format. It came out all messed up for some reason :frowning:

No bloom with a slower RoF would be the perfect fix, don’t know if they included that in the title update though:(

The RoF is fine with no bloom for competitive play.

Provides a reason to play smart and stay out of bad situations and open spaces.

I like ZB better it is really fun and makes it more of a challenge no longer do people just run out and shoot u have to now be careful on what you do if not u will quickly die

I haven’t played much 85%, and it takes more than 1 game to transition between ZB and 85% (I’ve been playing ZB for two weeks so going back to any bloom is just miserable) But it seems to me like 85% really doesn’t do anything other than shave a fraction of a section off of a “paced” kill. It doesn’t seem to me like it makes spamming any less effective. I could be wrong though.

I can see what you mean, I used to think similarly. But sometimes, the simpler it is the better it is.

I find that if I spam, even with zero bloom, my shot becomes off because my right index finger is moving so fast that it affects my right thumb which is what I use to aim. That’s why I began playing the TU playlist with the pistol (because it is 4 shot with a faster fire rate) but then switched to the DMR. The DMR’s slower max fire rate forces me to spam slightly less, keeping may aim on. Whereas the pistol is still the best in close range because it’s 4 shot, faster ROF and CQC is where aim doesn’t mean as much so I can spam to my heart’s content.
