Returning to the Ark Theory

In the E3 trailer of Halo on Xbox One, we saw Master Chief walking through a desert (cloaked) until he stumbles upon an awakening Guardian. He pulls out the chip Cortana used to live in and his face is revealed by a shock wave emitted by the Guardian. As epic as it is, we all are wondering," where are they?"

Warning: while this isn’t considered a “Spoilers” it could contain some spoiler-like content, so I really advise that you take precaution before reading more.

A lot of people have suggested that the place where the Master Chief and the Guardian are is the Ark, which for had been for some time now revealed to be the setting of Halo Wars 2, which is also involved in this theory. Something I’d like to also point out is how the Domain is always described as a system that spans the known galaxy, and as established in Halo 3: the Ark is just a couple of light-years beyond the rim, considerably far enough to be beyond the reach of the Domain’s control. This implies any Guardian possibly still resting on the Ark was not able to receive the call by Cortana.

As for a Guardian being on the Ark to begin with: we do not have that much lore to give many historical theories as to why it could be there, but I have a theory that derives from Halo Wars 2, and could possibly come into play in its story. In the Beta, one of the maps is described as (not the precise wording) “A scarred land by an awakened giant” many of us are familiar with that particular kind of destruction from Halo 5 Guardians.

Its importance to the Master Chief: you can check out on a different topic of mine “No Cortana!” I suggested there’s someone else who could be controlling Cortana, a majority of people including myself think that this could be true. If so, then I also think there is a possibility that she could return, I think her AI matrix could be extracted from the Domain and placed back into Chief’s chip, which he holds in the E3 trailer, and would also reveal the one who may be really behind this. Chief could try to use the Guardian to return to the Domain (since the gateway on Genesis has likely been shot off) and rescue her.

Conflict: though I have not watched the video, I know Halofollower has made a video suggesting that the Banished might be in Halo 6, which would provide an enemy to fill in the roll of the Covenant as well as a conflict for Chief on the Ark.

How does Chief know: Halo Wars 2 could again be involved with this, but if not, its possible Mendicant Bias could still be out for atonement, and tries to contact Chief similar to how Cortana contacted him in Halo 5. Taking control of the Guardian himself, Chief and him return to the Domain, rescue Cortana, and finish the fight!

I like this.

I think you’re on to something here.

Chief and what he’s seen will definitely play a part in H6 imo.

(For anyone that hasn’t seen Walker184’s Cortana post you can find it here No Cortana!!)

I can definitely get behind this if 343i did this for halo 6

Yeah, sure, I’m down. Hopefully 343i has something slick like this planned for the next one. Halo 3, especially, had a feeling of scale in it more massive than any of the other games, it truly felt like you were doing something magnificent that affected everything. I really hope they can bring that feeling back in the next title.

That works for me. I like the inclusion of Mendicant Bias and I’d like to see a tie in between Abbadon/Warden/Warten Eternal.

I like it. It fits with the timeline since Chief’s visor was cracked in that trailer as well.

Anybody else?

its definitely an interesting theory, I look forward to seeing how this plays out (if it does) in the upcoming games

I’m more and more convinced the “Cortana” we’re seeing, which I believe has been confirmed as a ‘ghost’ or fragment of her, is going to be revealed as an imposter even though she may believe she’s the real deal. And on an awkward level…she kind of is but…shattered. This “Cortana” is almost like what would happen if you distilled the worst parts of Halsey’s mind and amplified it without any real direction.
Pulled from Halsey’s Journal Blog

> Based on Cortana’s analysis of a captured Covenant AI on the Ascendent Justice, Covenant AIs were captured UNSC AIs that had been corrupted by repeated copying.

Emphasis mine. The blog also states how degraded AI become when they’re copied a ton of times and even when Cortana did it to overcome Covenant tech at times.
I’m wondering if the Cortana we’re seeing is a damaged copy because we saw her fragment like crazy at the end of Halo 4. The Halo 5 Cortana is acting so out of character I’d say that it’s a broken copy that was “stabilized” by the Domain…but it had been focused on it’s anger/etc that the real Cortana (or shattered pieces,) never all made it to the Domain or that version of her. In essence…it’s not really her. I’m not sure if that really makes me feel any better (as hints could have been laid and still feels…so cliche and damaging to her as a character/overall Halo story,) but it could explain why Chief is looking for that Guardian and/or the Ark. There’s the real possibility, (maybe… I’d say I’m just mediocre when it comes to Halo lore), that he’s trying to piece her back together to stop…the other Cortana. It’s still crap for the most part and still hurts that so many AI just decided to turn and side with her, and the Guardians themselves are stupid, but maybe they can salvage some of the BS story crap they pulled in 5 and put SOMETHING back on track in 6.

Random thought…could the Didact have co-opted the fragment of Cortana and basically we’re seeing Ur-Cortana? lol
