Returning Halo player looking for advice

I’m back from a two year break from video games, due to college, and I recently got Halo 5 and I’m absolutely terrible at it and having no fun whatsoever. People can kill me in two shots at full health, yet I can empty an entire AR, SMG, or BR clip into someone and it does absolutely nothing. Any tips as to where am I going wrong?
I rarely finish with 1.0 K/D, lose almost every match and any that I do win I’ve been carried by my team. I know I’m bound to be rusty, but I’m even worse then when I started playing Halo 3. Even at my “height” during Reach, I had good days and bad days but I never lost this many matches. I always played for fun and never really cared about winning or losing but there’s only so many times you can have your backside handed to you before it starts to make you want to not even bother.

TL;DR: returning player looking for tips and advice

Set your dead zones and play things like warzone or BTB just keep playing and practicing learn what weapons are good for which scenarios

Practice and hone your skills in arena or campaign, and when you feel ready just go into warzone or rumble pit.

Breakout is a great place to find your feet.

I guess so. But you only need to know the map layout

You must first learn the H5 Pistol it’s you new best friend. Then as much as I hate to say it once you have mastered the pistol, the AR is your next course. You must learn the distance line of where the AR beats or loses to the Pistol. Knowing when to have AR or when to have Pistol is Key. Replace your Pistol with BR/DMR when possible, and replace your AR with Storm Rifle when possible. Brings us to Course 3 the Storm Rifle. This weapon is absolute beast if it is in the right hands , knowing when to hold the trigger,or burst fire. Remember you can Zoom in with Every weapon including the Storm. If anyone likes this post I will go on with H5 101

I stopped playing for 3-4 years due to college and came back with ease due to the BR being back. It’s still 4 shot, honestly not much has changed from H3 in terms of the gunplay.

Thanks for he speedy replies
What do the dead zones do? Only I’ve seen them in the options but not really bothered with them.

I’ve completed the campaign on Heroic and started a Legendary run but I find that in the campaign the guns seem great but as soon as I hit matchmaking, people seem to sponge everything I throw at them. Even if we both have the exact same starting weapons, my guns always seem weaker than my opponent’s.

  1. learn to use the new spartan abilities, i have been playing since the first halo, and saw the abilities as a bit of a gimmick at first, later on i discovered they are invaluable.
  2. The one - two, combo your -Yoink- off, emptied half a mag? Smack him in the face! Came round a corner and bashed someone? Aim up that headshot! Find little combos, this will mean you can use different ones for different situations, throwing opponents off-guard.
  3. Find your weapon, Everyone has a favorite (or in some cases a few favorites) find yours and find combos that work with it, then find it on every map.
  4. Forge, its ok, don’t worry im not going to say you need to be a map designer, forge will let you learn the layouts of maps, load up a map and have a look about.
  5. There is no ‘lone wolf’ in ‘team’, sure if your good, lone wolf is all gravy, but if your new (or prefer teamwork) then sticking with your new pals means that you can pick up more kills, however be careful no to end up as a ‘cluster luck’.
  6. Aim at your feet, Sometimes that grenade will go to far, sometimes your just going to die, aim at your feet and fire off a 'nade hopefully you will survive, or at least get a beyond the grave kill.
  7. Boost! see that b button, use it, love it, it can be the difference between dying in a fiery 'nade explosion, it could be that last bit of closing difference on an assassination.
